Native Roots Market

This place made me want to move to Oklahoma. It’s a food snob’s dream shop in a hipster area of Oklahoma City near the university. There’s loft-​type apartment buildings and hipster Gastropubs and high end restaurants on the same block. Check out their meat section! They’re open pretty late and the guy working there was nice. Yummy deli items.

Great produce and salads. Really enjoyed my Mediterranean Salad — kalamata olives, hummus — all very tasty. Good choices in local, organic apples. Definitely heading back.
Also, nice peeps working there. Cool attitudes and not pretentious.

So great to see a local, organic foods market in downtown OKC. Stopped here twice for breakfast while visiting on business — get the veggie breakfast burrito, it’s delicious!

We are traveling across the Great Plains, the Heartland, the Midwest… From Los Angeles to Nashville. And aside from camp cooking, it is hard to find a decent meal along the i40.
We have eaten hamburgers in Albequerque and McDonalds in Shamrock, Tx… And I dont even eat McDonalds. That is how desparate we were for food. Searching for wholesome foods along the i40 feels like armageddon. No one eats fruits or vegetables. All meats are factory farmed. And no one is questioning it.
We finally make it out of the desolate stretch from the panhandle of Texas through Oklahoma to Oklahoma city… Finally, a city. And i’m not a city girl. But i do know that in a city one will most likely find a natural foods store. Thank you, American Food Revolutionists for supporting this paradigmn shift!
And, Hello, Native Roots Market! Chandler and Michael were epicly nice and hooked us up with free carrots and breakfast burritos for our camp trip! We both ordered chicken salad sandwiches fresh with cucumbers, sprouts, mustard, and everything we could pile on the «make-​your-​own» sandwich form.
The staff was so friendly that is makes up for the rediculously high prices of living in the food desert of Oklahoma.

After Native Roots left Norman, I haven’t had the chance to stop in their downtown location until recently! I had a meeting downtown then grabbed lunch at Native Roots after!
I’m a grocery store junky. I love a good grocery store, market, local shop etc. Native Roots is just that! They have necessities like milk, cheese and bread. Super convenient for those who live in the Level or deep Deuce. They also have a great spice selection and bulk grains.
After scouting out the store I walked ot the back area to grab lunch. They have different pre-​packaged small pasta salads, green salads, soups and sandwiches. I asked the man what he recommended and he said their Signature Chilean Tuna Salad. He said he has eaten one everyday for breakfast or lunch for as long as he worked there. how can you pass up a recommendation like that. Tip: Once they give you your food you walk to the front. I thought you paid back by the food so I awkwardly stood there until they kindly asked me what I was doing.
I grabbed a granola bar for a snack later, headed outside and enjoyed my lunch at one of the few tables they have set up. This is more of a grab and go place! My salad came with a scoop of their creamy and flavorful tuna salad, a scoop of some quinoa tabouli and avocado salsa kind of mixture over lettuce. The sweet man behind the counter suggested to keep the lid on and shake it all up together. I did as he said then ate ever last bit of it! i’ve been dreaming about this salad since. I can’t wait for the next time I’m downtown and need to grab lunch quick!

Best sandwiches in the country!!! I’m from California and Miami, FL and I travel a lot. So when. I say their sandwiches are good omg!!! I ate their everyday when I was in town for work. They not only have the best sandwiches, fresh organic produce, snacks, everyday necessities, and a spice bar. I wish we had one in San Diego!!!

Fantastic locally owned market in the Deep Deuce neighborhood. This is the kind of market every neighborhood should have. They get their stuff from the closest possible source. Dairy, produce, meat, you name it. Additionally, they carry a LOT of organic products. The produce is fresher than your local megamart, which is fantastic. Additionally, every employee I’ve encountered has been fantastic.
One of my favorite things is the spice bar. When I am cooking a new recipe and I only need a teaspoon, or even less, of a spice I don’t regularly use, I hate having to spend the money for a full size bottle at the grocery store. I particularly hate it when I don’t care for the recipe, won’t make it again, and end up throwing away 99.8% of the spice a year later when cleaning out the kitchen.
I have seen a couple of Unilocalers balk at some of the prices. First of all, Native Roots is in Deep Deuce, which is not a cheap area in OKC. I would imagine their rent is much higher than your typical market comparable size. Secondly, and most importantly, QUALITY COSTS MORE. When you consider what you are getting for local, organic, fresh quality produce versus the choices at your local Target or Wal-​Mart (if you’re into that place, which I am most assuredly not) the higher price is well worth it. Just as a burger at Tucker’s cost more than a burger at McDonald’s, so too should produce and meat of this quality cost more than that sold at chains and large discount grocery stores. Okay, rant over.
Finally, give the deli a shot and get a sandwich. These aren’t fancy, but they further demonstrate how good food can be when it’s simple and good quality.

A micro grocer with local and organic products along with some Fruit Loops if you’re not into healthy organic groceries! It’s located in a condo building so I’m sure the residents enjoy having it!

Local and specialty food store. Really great bacon and local dairy. I got some bee’s pollen which I never knew was a thing but apparently it’s a Superfood so why not. They do have some regular grocery store type food – those Keebler fudge stripe cookies for $ 5? Don’t do it. But for Oklahoma products and specialty items, sure. You can get a Keep it Local card here, too!

I’ve never lived more than a couple miles from a large grocery store, but Downtown OKC is something of a wasteland. Native Roots Market saves the day! I come in quite frequently to pick up missing items for recipes I am making. Employees are always super nice and helpful. I love their homemade hummus! They have lots of paleo and gluten-​free ingredients, which comes in super handy. Produce is a little on the pricy side but worth it for the convenience factor.

The food is pretty good here! Solid selection of different things you may need. It is a little pricey, but I have yet to have anything that I did not like. The employees are very friendly and more than willing to help you. Worth going to if you don’t feel like driving to Sprouts or Whole Foods.

Yum! I love this little organic oasis in the heart of downtown. It is in the perfect spot — a sort of quiet corner. The grocery store has a generous offering of organic meats and dairy, the essentials of produce, and a deli that rocks my cosmos. I am on a search for delicious and healthy lunches I can bring to work for my 30 minute break. I toggle between Whole Foods (custom-​made wraps), the delightful delicacies at Elemental Coffee Roasters, but I need that last muse. Native Roots Market makes high-​quality local foods in their kitchen — berry medley salads, sandwiches, savory vegetable soups, and I even saw a warming case with burritos. Yum! I like this change of pace.

This place looks like a great venue for locally-​grown foods and products from Oklahoma! It also has a built-​in deli for more immediate cooked food needs!
It’s not the cheapest produce in the world, but among the freshest I’ve seen. You can get a variety if fresh fruits and veggies from a price range of $ 2-​$ 6. Their meats range more between $ 8-​$ 21.
The staff is friendly and helpful. They label all of their locally-​grown and made products so you know what you’re getting!
They also have a parking garage nearby with spots specifically for their patrons!
Give this place a try!

This place is a really welcome «island» in a neighborhood that needs a place like this.
I came rolling in from out of town, and was stayin’ at the aLoft Hotel across the street. I really just needed some piece of quiet after a long day in the car and traveling from Texas.
I had also walked through Bricktown, and I really didn’t feel like the energy for anything loud over there. Even though Native Roots was merely across the street, they were the last stop on my walk, at ’round 10 pm, or so — closing time for them.
They’re kinda like a mix between — glorified convenience store «meets» mini-​market for local/​organic snacks, canned goods, beverages, and produce.
I thought I’d settled for just an Izze (sparkling orange soda) for dinner, though the deli counter in back caught my eye.
I went with the Greek Salad — butter lettuce, tabbouleh, a gi-​nourmous inch-​thick hunka goat cheese, red onion, cherry tomatoes, greek olives, and hummus.
The other thing that I remember, and the reason why I went with the Greek, is in looking at the salad ingredients, the dressing didn’t seem too vinegary (which is what I am sensitive to), it looked fresh, and that butter lettuce is my favorite, and wasn’t your typical Romaine.
I think that the total came out to just over $ 10 for «a pretty good salad and my favorite soda,» which was a pretty good deal in my book.
They had a table on the corner outside, and it was a super nice break to spend with me, myself; alone; amidst the clean/​crisp outdoors and the starry evening sky.
Last of all, I chatted briefly with the guy behind the counter, and I *think* that he was the proprietor cuz he talked about going to a grocer’s convention. I really like super nice guys, so that sends my review over the edge to 5-​stars.

This place is fantastic. Organic produce, local products, and a great deli. The only problem is it’s too EXPENSIVE. Honestly the only thing that I feel good buying here are the sandwiches at the deli. They are delicious. You take a slip made by the store, choose your ingredients, and hand it to one of the hipster employees behind the deli counter and they will take care of the rest. As far as the rest of the store goes, it is way overpriced. It’s definitely a smaller version of Whole Foods. It’s great that almost everything in the store is local. But does that necessarily mean they require a significant markup? If you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on groceries then at least come here for the sandwiches.

As far as Native Roots Market goes for groceries, I’m just too poor. Everything is so expensive that I could only justify buying anything if I were wealthy. The Native Roots Deli, however, is a completely different story.
I stopped in to get a sandwich today because I was in the area and had been wanting to try it for quite a while. I ordered the veggie and hummus sandwich. The ordering process is quite simple: grab a pen and sheet and circle exactly what it is you want on your sandwich and hand it to one of the lovely sandwich makers and they’ll have it ready for you in no time. Everything about this deli makes me happy. Everything is super fresh, from the bread to the veggies, cheeses and meats. But really the best part about it is the sandwich is only $ 7 and it is delicious and very filling. Whenever I am in the area, I will absolutely stop at Native Roots for a sandwich, guaranteed.

You can always get one of the everyday sandwiches made to order in the deli — they are «everyday» sandwiches after all. You should also check for their daily specials. Depending on the season, it could be a soup, a salad or a sandwich. Once or twice when it was cold I got their soup and it was really good. It’s in the nineties today & the daly special was a BTLTA sandwich. That’s a bacon, turkey, lettuce. tomato & avocado sandwich with mayo. I hate both avocados & mayo but since they are made to order it was easy to get mine without avocado and with one of their specialty mustards instead of mayo.
Their KeepItLocal discount also applies to the food they make in the deli. I also got a banana, checked out & headed back to my office for lunch. The sandwich was really good. Since my office is close by, I got fresh air, exercise & a delicious sandwich on my lunch break. To save time, do like I did & call in your order in advance since it takes about 10 minutes for them to fix your sandwich.

If you’re living downtown, you know there aren’t a lot of options for local grocery shopping. And if you find yourself wanting to stay in and cook quality food at the last minute, you should be very happy there’s a Native Roots Market nearby.
I think of it as a «whole foods express», which I mean as a compliment. This place has premium ingredients, albeit at premium prices. However, it’s not designed to be your end-​all shopping experience. This is not the kind of grocery store where you make a list, and buy everything on that list. I come here for inspiration to cook something on short notice, and for the specialty items.
What specialty items? For starters, they make a KILLER fresh salsa, and sell it at a surprisingly great price ($ 5 for a container full!). The cooks are always up to no-​good (and by that, I mean up to something very good). The last time I stopped in, they let me try a chili they were working on which incorporated their fresh-​ground spices. Oh, did I mention they grind fresh spices daily, and will let you buy as little as ¼ teaspoon at a time? Throw away that 5 year old container of grocery store cumin and awaken your senses at Native Roots Market!
The owner is utterly passionate about locally sourced ingredients. He has great relationships with his local farms and providers. He truly loves what he does, and you can find him there most evenings. His name is Matt, so if you see him, thank him for such a wonderful store.
Store favorites of mine: fresh salsa, concentrated iced coffee, organic sour cream, fresh chili powder, buffalo steaks, farm fresh eggs.

Walking in to @NativeRootsOK, I felt as often do lately: geography is the only thing this city shares with the city in which I grew up. Downtown apartments with street-​level retail? Street level retail that is also a decent-​size, well-​appointed, thoughtfully planned grocery? Oh wait, what’s that you say? Local produce, meat and sundry? A deli that makes delicious sandwiches, salads and quiches? A spice bar where you can buy the amount you need so you can try out a new recipe? Why am I writing all of this as a question? You got me. I’ll stop.
In short, you could live downtown and scarcely need to leave. You almost certainly could live downtown, not have a car, and be totally fine. The last time this was the case would have been before my generation was alive. But these pioneers get much more than just get a grocery downtown. These urban pioneers get a grocery downtown that supports sustainable agriculture, a store that recycles, uses green products to clean and appoint the store and is energy efficient.
All the tea, coffee, chocolates and handmade items are fair trade and labor. But what good is all that without ensuring the locals working here are taken care of? (I’m looking directly, scathingly at you, Wal-​Mart). NR employees have access to scholarships, health insurance and more. To say we’re lucky to have Native Roots would be a terrible understatement. So, I’ll say it again: let’s take care of her. Even if you don’t live or work downtown, make it a point to check it out and pick up a few things while you’re there.

What an great little place in the middle of downtown. Want to know something amazing? I just hung out here with friends ON A SUNDAY. Yeah, those familiar with the downtown area are just as surprised as I am.
Fresh fruits and vegetables, bacon, beef, cheeses, local honey, peanut butter, pecan butter, spices, and dry goods make this a destination for anyone driving by downtown. Let me mention the spices one more time, too. Ever had that recipe that called for all the stuff you’ve never even heard of, a pinch of this and a dash of that? Native Roots has it all, plus they’ll give you a little plastic cup full of the exact mix you need. Unreal service.
Grab a cup of hot coffee, a scone, or a nice cold fancy soda or kombucha from the fridge while doing a bit of shopping. Shoot, have a sandwich, have the friendly employees build you the perfect «everyday sandwich». Big tip? Try the tuna.
All in all this is a great shopping spot. It’s a mini Whole Foods with a whole lot of great attitude right near my home and office, and prices are competitive.
