Houston’s Armadillo Grill

Temporarily closed. Owner had some sort of surgery. Now they are talking about selling :(this saddens me. Was a great place to eat and they delivered. We ended this and it’s gone already :(

BEST TACO EVAR.
My best friend’s momma and my auntie took me there before I head back to the West Coast for work and back to reality.
But that taco-​I ate one in May and it’s almost October and I still want one.

Just like SATCO downtown Nashville. Have you ever been to SATCO San Antiono Taco Company? If so, this is exactly the same kind of place and food. The owner of SATCO left there in Nashville to come to Old Hickory and started his own business, love it! It’s so close to home as well.

Great food! Eat there at least 1 time every other week. The service is awesome and the Atmosphere is great. The freshness and quality of the food is second to none. I am always telling people to go out to Old Hickory and try it out.

We were looking for a quick bite (and little since it wasn’t going to be our dinner). I had seen Houston’s Armadillo Grill mentioned on Facebook so we decided to give it a shot. We were greeted right away by a gentleman who came from behind the counter. He gave us the rundown on the business and the menu and how to order. We met a manager while we were there also, all super friendly which was reason enough for me to want to back. I will absolutely support a place that truly values it’s customers. Our food order was simple, just a couple tacos and had to try the queso as we were told it won a «best in the city» type award. The food was quick and was very good. The queso was good too, a little watery but good flavor. We’d definitely recommend and definitely go back. Preferably in warmer weather when we can sit back on the patio and enjoy a beer with our food. Bonus on the discount when you pay with cash also!

The food is great here! This is a build-​your-​own taco place. They have other items as well, but I cannot get past the delicious tacos to try anything else. The beef is the best for tacos. Chicken could use a little more flavor in my opinion. The grilled peppers are magically delicious. Salsa, guacamole, cheese dip, and chips are all severely yummy. The people working there are very friendly but not in an intrusive way. The owners are often present and seem honestly interested in making customers happy.

OWNS THIS PLACE. the ordering is the same. the food is fresh and the owner is really cool. the taco salad was great and the tacos were good. taco bell prices but fresh and good. the queso and guacamole were fresh and good. its a restaurant slash fast food mix. they even have karaōke on fri and sat nights and they serve alcohol.

Growing up in south central Texas makes you a bit of a snob when it comes to Tex Mex. It is different than what a lot of people describe as Mexican cuisine. It is in a class all its own. With that being said, we headed to Houston’s Armadillo Grill because it is relatively close to home and I needed a taco.
The set up to order is similar to San Antonio Taco Co. You fill out your items on a form, stand in line, then pay and order. Food comes out rather quickly after that.
We situated ourselves on the patio and enjoyed a cerveza and then started to chow down. I had a chicken enchilada and a beef fajita taco with guac, cheese, lettuce and tomato. My enchilada tasted quite similar to the kind I grew up eating and that are still prepared at my mother’s home. My taco was tender and flavorful — plus the flour tortillas were put on a griddle and made a bit crispy. That helps to keep them from disintegrating — nice touch! We shared the queso (which was a bit thin but tasty) and a side of guac. The guac was not my fave. It was a bit too creamy like it had sour cream added to it. I’m more of purist and prefer just lime juice, salt and cilantro. Perhaps a bit of onion or tomato can be added depending upon my mood…
Overall, the food was good and the outdoor area was comfortable with all the fans blowing. The best perk was that you get a 15% discount if you pay in cash. Good to keep in mind if you plan on visiting this place in the heart of Old Hickory Village. I’ll definitely go back the next time I need a taco fix and don’t feel like doing the cooking.

This fantastic place is right up the street from us… so we decided to stop in last night for a late dinner. We were very impressed. The food was great quality, tasted fresh and authentic Tex-Mex…the restaurant was clean… the service was fantastic, we even had the owner and one of the cooks stop by our table to make sure everything was good and chat with us… and the prices were reasonable.
I’m from Southern California, and it’s hard to find decent Mexican food out here in TN. This place nailed it. Their guacamole had just enough spice and was obviously made on site. Their tacos were made to order and stuffed full. You won’t leave hungry here.
The atmosphere is casual… it has a great patio with fans and multiple television screens… and inside was decorated wonderfully and also had many televisions to watch. Great place to watch a game, or just relax on a summer night on the patio like we did
We’re definitely going to make this one of our regular «haunts».

Food is great! Experience was wonderful as well, staff followed up to make sure we enjoyed our meal, we sat down right away, etc. Food is very similar tex mex to SATCO if you have been there.
One thing I will say is that the logo needs some work. I would also like them to do some more advertising in the area. I only heard of this because of a neighbor, otherwise I would not have known about the restaurant. Really want this place to succeed and get the word out!
