It was on the way home, so I stopped in to pick up a few things. This is an old-fashioned supermarket, and nostalgia notwithstanding, the selection was pretty poor. The meats were very inexpensive compared to most stores. But when it became apparent that I’d have to go to a different store to get everything I needed, I left without buying anything.

Sometimes I write less than satisfied reviews not with the intention of being mean or smiting that business, but with the hope that the owners/managers will read them and think about implementing some changes. This is one of those reviews. Piggly Wiggly Old Hickory suffers from a lack of competition, and as every good capitalist knows, lack of competition invites complacency. Piggly Wiggly is complacent. It’s not clean. When I walk into a store that sells food and the smell puts me off the food, that’s not the place I want to shop. They need to work on that. The store is old and has outdated fridges and freezers, but that doesn’t really bother me. What bothers me is their refusal to cater to the people who live in Old Hickory. I see lots of posts on our neighborhood Facebook page lambasting Piggly Wiggly because they have such minimal choices and the brands are all low-quality. I know it’s a small store, but even in a small store, they could stock a better, more varied array of vegetables and keep in some free-range eggs and a few natural products. People here are asking for it, and instead, we have to drive to Hermitage or Nashville to get it. I have seen some of these products at the Piggly Wiggly(although I think they made more of an effort when it was still H.G. Hills), but it’s not consistent, and you can’t reliably go there and get supplies for even basic recipes. I’m really impressed with the steps other grocery stores have made lately to cater to their customers’ demographics, and I think Piggly Wiggly should start looking at the business they are losing because they won’t move with the times.

It’s a small town market. Not a lot of variety and not the place to go if your an organic health food nut. But it’s the market in my area now and it’s clean and the staff is friendly. A bunch of kids earning a buck while in school. I love it :)
