Could not believe my luck in finding this place. I’ve been vacationing in OOB since I was a little girl, and since I’ve gotten older, I still try to make a yearly trip here for some beach time. A girlfriend and I were up there last weekend(July 22 — 24), and we stayed at the Moby Dick. It was an awesome experience. I almost hate to post this review because I want to keep the secret for myself! First off, when I booked the room, I had originally reserved Sat — Mon. I asked the owner(Paul) if it would be possible to give him my credit card number JUST to hold the room and pay cash when we arrived. He was more than ok with that. About a week and a half before we were to arrive, my friend’s work situation changed and she would now not be able to take the Monday off. Figuring we were going to lose the day, I emailed Paul and asked if there would be any way to switch our arrival date and stay Fri — Sun instead. I had an answer in about 20 minutes, no problem at all. I was already liking this place! For the price we paid, I was not expecting much from this place. I silently prayed on the way up there for the room to ATLEAST just have no bedbugs. I was prepared for pretty much anything else — after all, it’s a beach motel. We’re not talking 5 star hotel here. We arrive to check in, the people greeted us warmly, like they had been waiting for us. It happened to be the hottest day in about 100 years(no exaggeration), and we were sweltering. The young man who checked us in informed us that they had been running the air conditioner in our room all morning, so it would be comfortable when we arrived. I wanted to hug him at that point! It’s pretty rare in OOB for motels to even have a/c, and for them to run the a/c and crank up their electric bill just to ensure their guests are comfortable when they arrive was completely unexpected and really nice. We moved all our bags upstairs and were really happy with our room. We stayed in room 9, which looked exactly like you’d expect your grandmother’s beach cottage to look. Cute little knick-knacks everywhere, a full size dresser, two beds, a couch, and a kitchenette. There was also a balcony with a table and chairs, perfect for my friend who is a smoker. Oh and did I mention that the motel actually has a variety store downstairs? Fresh coffee, breakfast sandwiches, regular sandwiches, plus all the regular convenience store stuff is available. How much more could you want? We had an excellent time that weekend. The Moby Dick is almost exactly a half-mile from the downtown area, perfect for stumbling back after a night of cocktails and late-night pizza. It is also right across the street from the beach, so it was convenient to run back to the room if we forgot anything. Check-out time is 10am. We woke up and gathered all our stuff for our departure on Sunday, and were told by the folks in the store that since they were not full, they’d have no problem with us leaving our car in their lot if we wanted to enjoy the beach for the day, saving us about 10 bucks and having to fight to find a spot downtown. Overall, it was the best experience I’ve had at any of the OOB motels and I’ve stayed in at least 8 different ones over the years. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a great weekend at the beach. Oh and the only bad thing was: it is situated right next to the RR tracks. Now, I’ve been spending summers there since I was 9 years old, so the train doesn’t faze me anymore, I barely even hear it. But for some not used to it, you might have an issue. But for all the other plusses this place has, you should be able to overlook that!
