The Shack

I had the Maine lobster roll, the wife had fish & chips. Both were fantastic. The chicken fingers were great also. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. They offered chalk to my 2−½ year old and that kept her entertained while the wife and I enjoyed our cocktails.

I was drawn in by the frozen watermelon purée/​vodka slushie advertised on the menu in the window. We visited The Shack at 11:30 on a Sunday, just as they opened. We sat on the upstairs outside porch and took in views of the ocean, worth it even though it was a cold day.
The slushie was nicely slushed and tasty, I should have gotten two. A Bloody Mary made with jalapeño vodka was also very good and spicy.
We had fish & chips and a cubano sandwich. The fries were amazing, perfect thickness and extra crispy, the fish was crispy and moist The panini’ed cubano had warm fresh roasted pork and delicious thick slices of ham, with lots of pickles and thin layers of cheese, mustard & mayo.
Our waitress was great, super nice and friendly. We wish we lived closer.
Definitely worth checking out.

I am updating my review based on the owner of The Shack contacting me herself. She reached out and gave me a full explanation for the entire evening. I think that owners who take pride in their establishment are the best kind of owners .
While we don’t live in Maine, we will be back to try it again next year. Had we not waited so long for our food, and had it been warm, my boyfriend and I agree it probably would have been just as good as the other reviews.
These seems like a one off for The Shack. If you’re in OOB and want a good atmosphere and food, try this place out. Like o said, this doesn’t seem to be typical for this restaurant and the other reviews are so pleasant.
My boyfriend and I were in OOB for Labor Day weekend and went to dinner here last night. We went on the stellar reviews, and we really wanted lobster before we left. We got seated sooner than expected on the deck upstairs. Really cute décor. Not as busy as expected but it was a good atmosphere.
That’s pretty much where the good stopped. Our server was a very nice young girl. It looked like her and her twin worked there together. She took our drinks, and then came back to take our order. Then we waited.
And waited.
And waited.
For about 45 minutes. She came by once and said, «I know it’s taking awhile can I bring you anything in the meantime?» I told her if we could have our fries that would be great to munch on. Then we waited. No fries.
And waited.
She brought my boyfriend a free wine and said it was on the house. Still no fries she said she’d bring up, nor any speak of why the hell we were waiting so long.
There were TWO tables right next to us sat, and food brought, and DONE eating after us! We were still waiting. We ordered a lobster tail app, and fish tacos. THATS IT! Finally we were getting so pissed off (but are both nice and didn’t want to make a scene) we asked her 65 minutes after our order was taken if we could just take our food to go. She said yes. 10 min later brought us our food and bill. We paid. Still a 15% tip because we thought it might be a kitchen problem. We wrote a note on the receipt saying how unacceptable this was.
When we got in the car and looked in the boxes we were even MORE PISSED OFF! Literally 65 fucking minutes for one small lobster tail, COLD FISH TACOS AND 10 COLD FRIES!!!
She never once offered us any explanation why it was taking so long, that the kitchen backed up etc. we are assuming the ticket was lost or she forgot to put it in.
Whatever it was, there were literally people eating all around us (like an entire lobster so more complicated food etc) and getting their bill before we even got ours!
We were so so so damn pissed off an annoyed. AT LEAST TELL Us WHAT IS GOING ON OR OFFER AN APOLOGY. Nothing.
It’s a shame because it really ruined our last night, and we will tell everyone we know that goes to Maine to not go there despite other good reviews. Highly unprofessional and she probably won’t even care because we still tipped her pretty well.
Get your shit together. AND PS– our food was cold!!!
Ok getting so pissed off just thinking about how ridiculous it was.

Great friendly service, nice menu and fun beach town vibe. Had some great drinks, fries with both the spicy ketchup and the cheese sauce– nice flavor. Great fresh greens and veggies in Shack Salad. Fish tacos were plentiful and very flavorful. Fun to sit and watch the beach walkers! Lots of ice cream lovers walking by — next stop.

We came here to see the fireworks, and had the most awesome view from the upper patio. They have an awesome menu with tons of selections from sandwiches, to seafood and lobster. Also some fun specialty cocktails and a wide variety of beer and drink selections.
Our table had fish tacos, fried whole belly clams and a sandwich with fries and cheese dip.
The service was fast and friendly. The fried clams plate is a bit on the small side, but they basically melt in your mouth. Amazing and delicious. Best i’ve ever had. Feedback from the others with me was that the sandwich was good, and the fish tacos were amazing. My beer draft beer could have been colder, but shit happens.
The highlight however were the french fries and dip. Instead of a basic nacho style dip that we expected the cheese dip was a more light and queso type mixture. They were the best fries any of us have had.
A great new spot in OOB and well worth the visit.

As a local, I am so excited that The Shack opened up this summer in town! It stands out from other local restaurants because the menu is full of interesting food options made with quality, fresh ingredients that always aim to please. The fish tacos and spicy fruit salad I ordered for lunch were the perfect meal for a hot summer day. Their poutine is absolutely scrumptious too! Not only is their food great, but their wait staff provides amazing service! Our waitress, Erin, was especially friendly and made our meal all the more pleasant. We’ll be back soon! Thank you.

The fried whole– belly clams were quite possibly the best I have ever had. They added dill to the tartar sauce and it was awesome! My wife got the fried lobster tail and she loved it! For my entrée’ I had fish tacos which were phenomenal!

Everything I’ve had here is excellent! This place is a true taste of Maine and leaves you wanting for more. It’s probably the only place in oob that picks lobster every day. Fabulous menu with every Maine treasure addressed!

This place is the best. Delicious fish tacos, (they give you 3 HUGE tacos) great guacamole and the best drinks around. The spicy margarita and piña colada are excellent. I hear the fried clams are tasty too, but I don’t eat them. Relaxed atmosphere and they give kids sidewalk chalk to keep them happy and busy. The staff is super friendly and accommodating. It’s a must-​visit if you’re in Old Orchard Beach… this is our second time in 4 days and we’ll come again before we leave.

The Shack is a nice little eatery right on the beach with great service and a great environment. I enjoyed my food at this little shack.

Slow service. Had to ask 5 times for the high chair that they had offered when being seated. Wrong drinks and WAY over priced. Food was quick but small portions and also WAY over priced and mediocre at best (that’s a stretch). Was warned by other family members to stay away but thought we would give it a go, next time I’ll listen.

Reuben sandwich with their fresh made chips and an iced tea was all I needed for my lunch break from the beach. My friend got the guacamole with chips… it was fresh and delicious. Great service too!

I live here and this has become a regular stop for us. great drinks and great light fare. Spicy fruit, grilled corn on the cob and the first tacos are some of my favorites. Everything is fresh and a good change from all the fried food on the strip.

Love the view of the ocean as well as the lights from Palace Playland! Prefect spot for a cool drink. The fried lobster roll exceeded my expectations! Not too fried, as I was worried, but PERFECTLY lightly breaded with huge chunks of lobster tails. Great location with easy parking next door. Awesome spot!

My wife and I decided on The Shack based on the few reviews on Unilocal,but we have to agree it is well worth the visit. We sat on the elevated rear deck with ocean views (over a parking lot), but you can experience some of the ambience from the adjacent small amusement park on the beach. The tables were clean, the hostess and waitress were timely, and the food was prepared quickly. Drink and food prices were moderate, but the quality of the food was very good. We ordered the poutine, fish tacos, and the chile burger and each were of good quality for the type of establishment (burger/​sandwich focused).

MOST IMPROVED… we’ve been here a few times and it’s gotten better each visit. The staff is always really nice! The fries and homemade cheese sauce are sooo good! The fries are super crispy and I just can’t get enough of the cheese sauce. The buffalo wings are crispy and delicious and not to mention, they have homemade ranch :) so fresh! I had the fish tacos earlier this summer and they were good; I had them again today and WOW, just amazing — each bite is full of fresh flavors!

The most upbeat staff in Old Orchard. For a seasonal town you’d think everyone would be happy to finally have some business, but the Shack seems to be the only place that holds true to service with a smile. And genuine smiles, not the creepy robot smiles you typically see in this biz. The food was amazing. You can tell its fresh. I even over heard one of the servers «feeling bad for the lobster» that was about to be cooked. These people care about what they’re doing and cook with love. I got the Shack Burger and WOW. The meat is hand mixed with garlic, minced onions, love and a hint of red wine. Not your typical frozen chunk of meat people. EAT HERE!

Food was fresh and very tasty! The service was great! Everyone was so friendly and smiling, they looked like they loved their jobs. Menu is priced right for the portions you receive. The menu is simple but creative and has something for everyone! They have a great beer selection as well as a full bar. Great atmosphere!!!

Best fried oyster sandwich since I was in the French Quarter of lousiana! Great food!!!
