We just love this place! The Fried chicken exemplifies Hoosier fried chicken, peppery, salty, crispy skin and juicy inside, great with an ice cold beer or iced tea. Salad bar is excellent and fresh also, has everything from pudding, pasta, toss salad, cole slaw etc, other menu items are good also, sauerkraut balls w spicy mustard, yum. There are lots of good things on the menu if you don’t like chicken. We eat here about once every 10 days or so even though it is about a 20 mile drive. There are about 37 or so restaurants on the chicken trail in south east indiana, we have, not intentionally, eaten at about 27 or 28 of them and we think this is the best of them all.

If you like spicier food, try the Jalapeño cheese-sticks! They are delicious! The salad bar is dope, too!

Best German food I have had. The sauerkraut is fresh, homemade deliciousness. The fried sauerkraut balls and mustard are delicious. I had the pork schnitzel and it beat out many world famous schnitzels I have had. The red cabbage is so absolutely delicious. Tried my mom’s fried chicken, excellent as well. Good german beers, great potato pancakes, solid salad bar with many meals, and friendly wait staff. It’s all set in a beautiful small german town. Definitely check it out!

Our first visit to Brau House did not disappoint! Larger than it appears on the outside, the Brau Haus has a nice selection of rooms, all with different themes… a local sports room, a local history room, a larger party/banquet room, and, of course, a bar. Our server, Pat, was a treat. She did a great job of telling us the history of the place(and the town) and gave us a good explanation of the menu. We chose sauerkraut balls for our appetizer, and they were awesome. Nice mix of flavors, without one overwhelming the other. I REALLY like them. Being a breaded tenderloin fan, that’s what I chose, and it was absolutely amazing. You can really taste the German influence in the breading and seasoning, so it’s not«quite» traditional… but it’s over the top good. All in all, an amazing experience.

This is a great German place to check out if you are in Oldenburg! Oldenburg is an adorable, quaint town and this restaurant fits right in! It’s bigger that it looks from the outside. Parking was easy, and it was starting to get crowded at noon. I had the chicken noodle soup. It was a little peppery. One person had fried chicken which was good and plentiful. The cod was good and was a huge portion. The potato salad was great! It’s a more tradional German potato salad. The service was friendly and prompt.

As you know, the chicken is really good. I tried the schnitzel and it is fabulous. Crispy fried pork loin on a savory brown gravy with potato pancakes and sauerkraut. So good. I had a Spaten Oktoberfest beer with it. Again, fabulous. Food is fabulous but that is just the icing on the Brau Haus cake. This restaurant is located in the exceptionally picturesque, bucolic, town of Oldenburg. A very Geman flavored burg and so very nice. Being in a nearby town on business and dining alone I chose to sit at the bar. My old friend Mary eventually noticed I was there. I reminded her I had been there previously twenty-five years ago but she didn’t remember me. It’s OK. I told her I remembered her, she asked me what her name was while fiddling with the cash register. The fellow next to me reminded me it was Mary and I told her«Mary!». Everyone in the bar laughed. I struck up a casual conversation with the fellow sitting nearby at the bar and within minutes I felt as though I was a life long resident of Oldenburg. We spent a couple of hours just chatting which is so nice when you are out of town alone. I think I signed up to be on their annual festival committee. I love it here. Bottom Line: Excellent food! Unpretentious ambiance. Great experience. Fall in love with the Brau Haus and Oldenburg.

The chicken is awesome! It is definitely finger licking good. Location: The restaurant is located in a small town. Parking is minimal. Food: I recommend the fried chicken! The sauerkraut balls were not bad as well. They have a decent size salad bar with a variety of vegetables and potato salads. There is a bar area! Get your beer on. Décor/Ambiance: The décor/ambiance reminds me of an old rustic restaurant when you look at the outside and inside of the restaurant. Overall, I might be back in the future if I’m in the area.

On our way back to Indianapolis from Cincinnati we came across this little restaurant thanks to Unilocal. The food was great. I mixed up a fruit salad thinking it was tuna and put it on my salad(they really should label it). Our family of 4 ate here for $ 38.99. They were packed for a Tuesday so service was a tad slow. I assume all good is fresh as it tasted that way. We had shrimp, sausage pattys and fried chicken. We all loved our food. I would highly recommend.

We were in the area for the afternoon and my husband wanted to stop in here for a German beer and a snack. What stood out the most about the place is how friendly the bartender and other patrons were, even though it’s a small local joint. They only had one German beer on draft and 4 bottles(that I could see); good, but not as many choices as we’d hoped to find. We tried the sauerkraut balls, potato pancakes, and warm German potato salad. All were quite good. I did see the salad bar that would have been nice with a meal, but didn’t partake. In the end, we’d frequent this bar/restaurant if we were locals. Give it a try sometime.

Very good German style foods. Their German Potatoes and Pickled Herring were excellent. The restaurant was very busy and but the staff was always there for you. to anyone. The desserts were also really good. Would recommend this place. Also if you have a chance check out the Sisters of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis, Oldenburg. It is a very interesting place to visit.

Really enjoy eating here on our travels. Salad bar is always well stocked and we always get enough chicken to take home for the next day or too. Love the little town atmosphere and the friendly hospitality.

One of our favorite places to go on Sunday evenings after we close our shop in Metamora. Nice variety of offerings on the menu, and a good salad bar. Pleasant wait staff that take care of you without being obtrusive.

Just good old fashion delicious food. We got the half fried chicken dinner with the salad bar. Note that the salad bar is less about lettuce salad and more about macaroni salad, potato salad, coleslaw salad, fruit salad. The right kind of salads!

Brau Haus is in the small village of Oldenburg, which itself deserves a review. It was founded by German immigrants who must have really wanted to recreate their home town(which I totally understand) and they did a good job on it, and the atmosphere remains in the 21st century. Soaring church spires, functioning bell towers, ornate street signs in German no less, with the English translation in smaller print underneath. Quaint little shops and storefronts, stone buildings; even the local grocery store is a tourist attraction. This restaurant & tavern fits perfectly into the scheme. You feel like you’ve stepped back into the«old world» when you step inside. The atmosphere is cozy and old fashioned. You walk in to a dining room with booths and tables against the walls; the salad bar is here too with plenty of floor space so the people at the tables aren’t disturbed. You’ll find the specials board here too, which on our visit indicated no less than four tempting varieties of homemade pie. To your left you enter the barroom, which includes tables as well, but again with comfortable walking space. The bar was also manned at all times. Beer selections included at least 4 German varieties; I don’t remember which were tap vs. bottled. Wooden bathroom doors are painted«Damen» und«Herren» with a picture of a person of the appropriate sex dressed in colorful German peasant costume. In the rear are two more dining rooms. There’s some good solid German items on the menu, of which we tried the sauerkraut balls… Yum! Secret recipe includes diced corned beef mixed in with the sauerkraut. They serve the balls on a bed of nicely browned kraut, with mustard. Very tasty, only wish they’d been just a little bigger, or that the price maybe a buck less. The flavor of southeast Indiana is here too, as prominent on the menu is their version of the famous fried chicken. We enjoyed a very good deal, whole chicken plus salad bar for two at $ 18.50. The chicken? What can I say. It’s absolutely delicious. It’s a style of fried chicken that apparently is not found anywhere other than Southeast Indiana; I call it the«crust that’s not a crust.» There’s no breading but the skin is so crispy and it’s coated with spices. The emphasis is on pepper, but its flavorful, not spicy-hot. The meat is very moist, the white meat too, and it really is out of this world. High marks on the salad bar, which in addition to fresh crisp mixed greens and assorted homemade dressings, including many cold side dishes which went perfectly with the fried chicken. And it also included three dessert items: strawberry Jell-O with fruit, tapioca pudding, and a wondrous something they simply called«the pineapple walnut.» It was pineapple walnut heaven, let me tell you. Creamy, crunchy and delectable; it would probably have made a pie filling to die for! But with this stuff surrounded by piecrust it might’ve been too much to take. As it was I had two helpings. If I could say that the service was prompt, attentive, and with that warm friendly small-town atmosphere, I would give five stars. Unfortunately, I can’t say that last bit. Service was really lackadaisical; I actually had to speak up and ask for a refill as the server passed my table. And they were not super busy. We were not checked on it all, and when we asked to have the leftovers wrapped she was unfortunately not really helpful. I almost sensed an attitude of «we know you’re tourists and you’re here for our wonderful local food so we’re doing you a favor.» However, go in expecting only fair-to-middling service, and you will enjoy some scrumptious food in a great old world atmosphere! It also seems like you’d be fine popping here just to sit at the bar and have a couple of beers and watch a(college) football game. As I said above, the bar was attended full-time.

Great fried chicken spot. The only negative is that the place is showing some age and needs a good deep cleaning.

We stopped for a late lunch today, and found the food to be good and the service fast and friendly. My only complaint is that I have a severe allergy to onions and asked the waitress if the soup had onion in it. She checked with the kitchen and assured me it did not. But two spoonfuls into my meal I was having a reaction and sure enough, there were visible pieces of onion in it! Not good at all. Everybody else enjoyed their meal. The chicken was good and the sauerkraut balls were a hit.

We’ve been to the Brau Haus three times in the last year or so, as we are traveling near Batesville/Oldenburg. Cheryl and I believe this to be the best chicken joint on the planet. They even have Beer and a Full Bar. Last night we were there with fourteen folks from the from Cincinnati and the www, club from Indianapolis. Were taken to room we had not seen before at the rear that probably sat 60 more people. It started as us being the only table and soon that room started to fill as well. I did call them about an hour before and they were more than ready for us with the table for fourteen already set. Again, we had the chicken, each meal cooked to order. We always order the Whole Chicken at only $ 11.50 with some extra trimmings like salad bar, fries, rings etc, We order the whole chicken as we know that we won’t eat it all and we take the balance home. We always order more chicken than we can eat so we make sure we have enough to take home. Sometimes it seems that the chicken is better cold the next day.
