YMCA

This building is old and has no air conditioner which makes it difficult to not worry about dropping my kids off for their summer camps and them being over heated. My kids do enjoy the camps and activities it’s just my personal preference regarding the temperature.
Their staff has always greeted my son in the morning and it makes him feel special. They usually have 2 types of camps to choose from which is awesome but often they have the children walk to one of the nearby churches (my sons only complaint because of how hot it is).
If your in the wait list they do a good job of trying to get you in so u have childcare.

OLYMPIA, WA — Super nice people at the front desk. Kind of a small maze of a YMCA. Small cardio and weight machine room down below. You CAN schedule a massage in advance here, which might be nice on tour. They provide towels if needed and locker locks as well. Ask to borrow a yoga mat if you take a class that requires one.

I wanted to like the YMCA. But after joining, I’ve been fairly disappointed by my experience.
I joined the Y because it is conveniently located downtown within walking distance of my apartment. I also love that it is in a historic building, which really gives it character and makes it part of the community. The fact that it has the Les Mills fitness classes is also a huge plus.
However, the facility is really showing its age and I don’t feel that enough money is devoted to maintaining or improving it. While I by no means expect a state-​of-​the-​art facility, I think that there are a lot of things they could do to improve the look and feel AND comfort of the building at very minimal cost. In particular, I take issue with their lack of air conditioning. If they have decided that AC is not worth the expense, then fine. But at the very least, they should get some decent fans in all of the rooms to provide enough air circulation to keep things cool. I’ve noticed that even when it is cool outside, it is quite warm in the building.
Another complaint is the lack of synchronization of all of the clocks throughout the facility. This makes timing when to arrive for classes very difficult. A nit picky complaint, yes, but also a very easy one to fix.
I’m also disappointed when I use the free weights room. It is such a small area that can only fit a handful of people comfortably before awkwardness ensues. And when I am the only person there, including no staff, I often wonder what would happen if I get hurt while lifting.
Again, I want to like the Y and I think this location has immense potential. However, thus far not enough is being done to maintain an adequate facility. Moreover, the monthly cost is substantially higher here than at other area gyms that are nicer facilities. My experience has been a nice trial run, but I don’t know that I will continue my membership much longer when I can belong to a better gym in the area at a lower cost.

i must beg to differ. there is nothing more disgusting than the smell of a bunch of olympians sweating their balls off on the elliptical while pretending that they aren’t listening to ms spears on their ipods.
the downtown Y is small, not a ton of weight equipment but exactly what you need to get the job done. it forces me to build my own bar and keeps me off of being machine reliant, which i like. i also like lifting in a room that is more like a prison yard with the dudes. they don’t bother me and i don’t bother them. even if i have pink lifting gloves and a side pony tail. they’re always willing to spot me.
the staff is super friendly and laid back. the classes are pretty cool and currently i am working up the nerve to get into the body pump class which i hear made a friend of mine nearly unable to walk for a few days.

Welcome to the gun show… sort of. No assault rifles or laser guided Berettas here, expect something more along the line of an 18^th century muskets.
By this, I mean there are a lot of middle aged and elderly people that use this location. Personally, this doesn’t bother me considering some gyms I have been to in the past have been filled with inconsiderate meatheads. The building is very old and lacks air condition, a must for the hot days of summer when you have to forgo your workout to avoid collapsing from heatstroke.
The weight room and cardio room are somewhat small compared to other gyms and don’t provide much in the way of variety. There is good amount of free weights available and machines that seem older than some of the younger patrons, but all seem to accomplish what they are designed for. Also there is an indoor track, gym, racquet ball courts, and a swimming pool.
The men’s locker room has sauna and steam rooms that are often used by the regulars. The locker room itself is normally clean, I have found used Band-​Aids and toenails scattered around from time to time. GROSS! I would like to see an attendant cleaning up in there occasionally during business hours.
Despite that, the staff is extremely helpful and personal trainers are available with your full membership. Other than that they are always around to answer questions and process you quickly on your way through check-​in. I really like the YMCA as an organization and everything they provide for the community, such as financial aid assistance with the cost of membership and exercise education.
A good place to work out if you can look past all the short comings and just get in there and get the job done. By that I mean you’re going to have to manually load that musket before you shoot it
