Sir Winston Ltd. has carried the Anglo-American standard in menswear in Lincoln and Omaha for at least 25 years, and probably longer. While most other local menswear retailers focused on modern styles and a predominantly Italian cut, Sir Winston has focused on the traditional or Ivy League look, which comes from the cross-pollination of British and American sartorial style.(And in case you haven’t figured it out yet, the store is named, appropriately enough, after Winston Churchill, whose mother was American.) For a time the store had locations in both Omaha and Lincoln and carried a wide variety of suits, jackets, trousers, neckties, and accessories. Think Brooks Brothers or J. Press to get an idea of the overall house style. The owner has been winding things down of late and now he just offers a few neckties in stock. The rest of his business is all done as made-to-measure special orders from fairly high-end manufacturers such as Corbin. Thus this is not the place for a guy who wants to walk out with a new pair of pants. It is however the perfect place for men who know what they want and are willing to wait a few weeks to get it just right. At this point they’re open fairly limited hours and I get the impression that the owner will be closing things up in the next few years. And that’s a real pity, because it’s just when the so-called Ivy Style is coming back into popularity with the younger men who have probably never set foot in Sir Winston. Too bad, because those guys would have loved this store in its heyday.
