«I dread the day when I want really good curry and sushi rolls, come to Bamboo House, and have it be closed.» — My husband

I decided to give it a try even after reading the reviews. I was here years ago and it was alright. Things have changed… First impression not so good, messy entrance, stuff laying all over the counter. The booths and dining area were kind of dirty as well. For a Friday night it was very empty and quiet, no background music or anything. It was kind of creepy and uncomfortable. Service was slow. Sushi deluxe plate and rolls we ordered came out but no soup or salad. Had to ask for them after the fact, and they did not have miso soup. The sushi was so-so at best, the imitation crab on the nigiri sushi plate was kind of tacky. No one checked on us during our meal, when we were done eating we had to go find them to pay. There’s much better place downtown.

Had half price sushi rolls. The place was dark, quiet and almost empty. Ordered 3 rolls. The waiter came back and asked if we were ready to order. I told him again our order. Asked for extra Wasabi and ginger and he said it would be a dollar extra each. The other 2 sushi restaurants in the area has never charged us extra. Then asked for 2 bowls of sushi rice and he had to ask the owner. We overheard the owner say«no». The waiter returned and said they do not sell their sushi rice, just the Asian rice that comes with the meals. The other places give generous bowls without question. Food was not acceptable.

Quiet early lunch crowd on a Friday. Staff is always so attentive. Ordered lunch sushi roll special which includes choice of three soups(I had wonton) and crisp, cold salad. Spicy shrimp roll and Boston roll. Ordered a side of spicy mayo. All food was tasty and fresh. Food came quickly and drink refilled twice. Great experience!

I’ve been to Bamboo house at least 10 times to dine and just as many as take out. I have witnessed this restaurant decline in quality over the years. The food is still good but the atmosphere has really taken a nose dive. The booths Are poor quality, the table condiments look like they haven’t been cleaned in months. On our most recent visit we noticed boxes, electrical equipment and garbage on empty tables and on the hibachi grill. In addition, all their signage looks like a kindergartener wrote and colored it. My husband and I had sushi and the green curry. It was tasty and the service was quick. Now with Sushi pirate and Shogun, Bamboo house needs to step it up in order to survive.

This place has gone downhill. It started off as a great food option when they opened. They got stingy with their portions. They closed down, opened back up and we gave them a couple more chances. NOMORE. They service is slow. The food is inconsistent and inedible. I think they only stay in business because of their proximity to the mall.

Service was good and pretty fast. Great combinations and variety of rolls. Sat at sushi bar — great service and a tasty extra.

Horrible. The egg rolls we got were the same kind as the frozen Pagoda brand, not real. We ordered Lo mein and garlic broccoli, that had no flavor. Hot drop Soup was cold. Disappointing because when we were here a year ago it was great. Don’t waste your money. The only good thing was the crab Rangoon. Worst Chinese I’ve had in la crosse.

I walked into this restaurant this evening and found that the men’s toilet was extremely unsanitary. One urinal was completely overflowing and the other had been covered with a plastic trash bag. The least they could have done was to place a sign or something indicating that they are working on fixing the problem. I believe if a restaurant doesn’t have a clean bathroom, it’s kitchen isn’t going to be any cleaner either. I walked out of here before ordering anything.

We always get carry-out because the service is not good. I like the steamed veggies and shrimp with garlic sauce(hard to mess it up), and the times I’ve had the curry I enjoyed it, particularly the pineapple curry with shrimp. Hot enough, Good flavor, generous portions. The lo mein has good flavor and texture. Don’t bother with the coconut shrimp — if there was coconut in the batter I’d be surprised. The fried dumplings are a little thick but tasty.

Every time I have gone here(4) it has been a fairly different restaurant. I’m not sure what is up with that but… The first time my sushi was too warm(it was meant to be cold) which weirded me out. The second time the manager was very rude and stared at me and my boyfriend at the time very suspiciously the WHOLE time. And was verbally rude. The third time was«meh». I went with a large group and the service was annoying because the waiter kept hitting on my friend, bothering her. The fourth time the service was terrible again. Forgot silverware, soups, brought us an extra salad(not a complaint just… whatever) and wouldn’t leave us alone. Usually poor service is ignoring you(in my experience) but this girl wouldn’t shut up. Just saying. I want to like this place. But…

This is one of my favorite sushi spots in the world. Pretty atmosphere and nice lighting, a good date spot. The rolls are the best I have ever had. My only complaint is that the sashimi is pretty inconsistent. The sushi boat is fun to get if you are sharing with friends. There isn’t a bad specialty drink on the menu and this is one of the only places in the area that has purple haze(hot sake and wine mix) which is delicious! They put a little more fish and vegetables in the small rolls compared to other places I have seen. The cooked food is great too and some of the better Chinese and Vietnamese food around but if you like sushi and come here, get sushi. they also have a couple of hibachi grills which can be fun. Nothing on the menu is overpriced and the lunch special is a great deal. 3 sushi rolls for 12 dollars with soup and salad? Yes! Although I have heard some friends complain about it, I haven’t had a bad experience yet. The fish is slightly less fresh on Sundays and noticeably so in the sashimi as they don’t get sushi grade fish in over the weekend.

Have to update to agree with some of the recent reviews. Unfortunately, they are accurate with some of the questions raised about cleanliness & food quality. There’s been turnover of sushi chefs, and I still consider them the best sushi in our area, but agree with other reviewers that it’s slipped, and yes, big Midwestern cities certainly have better sushi. Original review near opening is below. Shute hope they show more effort, or our visits will continue to decrease. Original review: Bamboo House is fantastic! Our family’s new favorite Asian restaurant. Quality ‘American Chinese’ food served piping hot straight from the wok, clearly made to order. I’ve sat at the sushi bar for lunch 3 times, and enjoyed a quality of sushi I haven’t found anywhere in the Midwest. Sushi chefs are Chinese heritage, but one I talked to trained in NYC for 4 years under a Japanese master. Sashimi is generously sliced & extremely fresh. I sat once at the hibachi bar with my daughters. They enjoyed a special Japanese soda with a fancy bottle that they could take home. Our performer was good, didn’t speak English. Food was what you’d expect of a stir fry; it was really more about the performance. I haven’t tried the Thai curries yet, but when I tire of sushi I will. Service has been fine. One time we waited a little long for our check, but other than that it’s been prompt courteous. The restaurant has generated quite a buzz for this area. One Friday night we came early, wanted to sit at the hibachi as a family, and they were booked solid for the whole night. We had to wait quite a while for a table that night. So hopefully it’s catching on with the locals. Heading back tonite!
