We’ve been camping in the Porkies for the past few summers and we always stop in to Nonesuch for excellent coffee(the best cappuccino in the area), tea, guitar straps, etc. Edna is a sweet lady who talks to us each time we’re there, and her quilts are bright and beautiful. The local art sold in her store is very cool as well. Since my girlfriend and I are both guitar players, we like to venture to the downstairs level to check out the acoustic guitars handmade by Brad. Looking forward to stopping by a couple times when we’re in town for the Porcupine Mountains Music Festival.

What a great shop! I said in my tip it was at the end of US45, I suppose I could have said the start of US45, but the truth is, US45 neither starts nor ends. It has a loop so when you go as far north as you can, it loops around the block and goes south again — all the way to Mobile, Alabama but here, in Ontonagon, the Nonesuch Gallery sells some of the coolest stuff you can imagine. Oh, and if you need strings for your guitar or banjo, they have those, too. I sat out front with my buddy who seems to be a cousin of Charlie McCarthy’s. He was wearing a hat that says, «Life is good, eh? In Ontonagon, Michigan.» He told me I needed one, so I bought one. And an official Stormy Kromer hat, too. If you find yourself in Da Yoop someday, and you find yourself running north on US45, take a run to Ontonagon and visit the Nonesuch Gallery. It’s worth the trip to Da Yoop by itself, eh?

This is such a totally cool place! I went in here a couple of times during my stay at Porcupine Mountains State Park. Edna is one of the nicest Yoopers you’ll ever want to meet. Besides really enjoying browsing around her store, I loved talking with her about what brought her to the area and what her life is like there. The selection of local artists’ work is great — I found my perfect UP souvenirs here. But if for nothing else, go in to see Edna’s quilts. I’d never heard of «quilt art» before, but this work definitely deserves the title«art» — I’ve never seen anything like it.
