Since I’m about as good in the water as a rock, this event gives poor swimmers like me a hope for doing a triathlon. The aquatic leg is 6 miles of canoeing or kayaking, which means you can do it as a team, too.(One-person kayaks are a recent addition, actually.) So you wake up early, paddle downstream, run back upstream(and up a huge, huge hill), then bike around for 18 miles. And that’s it! Situated in the woods around Fort Ancient, it’s a very pleasant setting for the first two legs. The bike, however, gets out into the open and subjects you to some serious sun. Be sure to make use of every water station. I got badly dehydrated with about four miles of hilly biking to go. It was not pleasant. Obviously it’s a lot of physical activity, but at least there’s no swimming. Land lovers rejoice! Register early, or you’ll have to start later in the morning. This sounds good to you sleepyheads, but noonday sun after 3 hours of exertion is not a friend. Try the fall event instead of the spring if you really want to avoid heat.
