It is a delight when a bread crumb trail leads you from one hidden gem to another. Beginning with a wine release party at New Clairvaux in Vina. Fabulous winemaker, Aimee suggested we try Wine Time in Chico for tapas and their massive wine assortment, traversing local makers and global sources. It was there, guided by our lovely and very well versed, Italian server, Martina, that we were introduced to Grey Fox’s nuanced Torrontes. Intrigued by this complex white, a road trip to Grey Fox Vineyards in Oroville’s countryside was planned for the next day’s agenda. Jeanne, one of the 4 owners gave us a personal tour and tasting. If you want to add some interesting whites to your tasting menu, definitely give the Torrontes, Verdelho and Viognier a go. Don’t miss the olive oils from local producers, as well. The hillside view alone is worth the trip here, bring a picnic lunch, match it with a bottle of wine and enjoy. Not prepared, as such, the final bread crumb was picked up from Jeanne for a pulled pork sandwich and tasty local brews at Miner’s Alley Brewing Company in old town Oroville. All in all, a fabulous little North Country tour, meant to be shared.

My family and I have been coming to Grey Fox for years, back when they had a tiny tasting room which they have expanded to be a large lovely room with a long table for many people to taste at and other smaller tables with little games for those that may be designated drivers. It also has large windows to enjoy the amazing view over their vineyards and beyond to the mountains. They do a $ 5 tasting but waive the fee if you buy a bottle which are reasonably priced. The wine is also very tasty, I recommend the Dolcetto wine. The owners and employees are also very nice and helpful. Combine the trip with a tasty lunch near by and you got a fun day ahead of you!

Grey Fox Vineyards is the very definition of a hidden little gem of a place. The winery itself is, strangely, situated in the middle of a somewhat dense subdivision. While we were driving up there, I was really starting to wonder if my Garmin was having issues(there’s a winery up here?!) but, once you turn the corner, input the security code into the gate(yes, I know, a security code?) you’re almost there and it’s worth the stop. Grey Fox vines wines are tasty, interesting, and reasonable, the tasting room is both tastefully done and spacious while offering an impressive view of the lake and they sell a tasty assortment of olive oils. If you really, really wan to get off the beaten path and try a winery which, as far as I can tell, hardly anyone has discovered… this is the place, folks.
