Grumpee’s Weenie Wagon

Great Chicago style hot dogs and brats. The older gentlemen who runs this wagon has been doing it for about 8 years (he told me) and is very nice to speak with. I highly recommend stopping on your next way into the Ottawa/​Utica area.

Grumpee’s was right where we needed it to be after driving from Chicago on our way to Wedron for a camping trip. Needing a quick snack, we grabbed a few chili cheese dogs and struck up a lovely conversation with the woman behind the wagon.
The chili cheese dogs were just dandy, but the real treat here is the pork chop sandwiches. Hand made with butter and garlic, we were offered a sample and were a bit surprised at how good they really were.
Next time I’m in the area, I’m going back.

You cannot miss the Weenie Wagon driving down 71. It’s a little red and yellow mobile unit with big flashing lights on the Weenie Wagon sign. This was one of those places you pass by and say you will visit one day. Well that day came last weekend as I was heading back from Starved Rock.
The menu is limited to hot dogs (chili, Chicago style and regular), pork chop sandwiches and brats. I wasn’t expecting too much from a simple wagon, but their food was actually really good and just right for the price. I had a chili dog with cheese and onions. I was shocked when I wasn’t charged extra for the onion and cheese (that’s pretty standard around here). I was a tad worried though when the chili came out of the microwave. But when I bit in, it was deliciousness. The hot dog, chili and cheese all had a good flavor and blended well together. Plus the dog was jumbo size to boot. One dog was just enough to satisfy the road munchies. After all these years I am happy I finally stopped by and on my next visit to Starved Rock, I will definitely be back.
