What a wonderful place. I love place like this. I love that the whole town fought to keep this place open when the city wanted to tear it down to build a bridge here. Instead they built over the top of it and left it standing. I love that their prices are kept down by not having a large menu and large overhead costs. Love hometown places. Highly recommend. The pie was great too.

This is a Midwest, Iowa, and Ottumwa tradition! The malts, the homemade pies, and the loose meat sandwiches plus the location across from the Hotel Ottumwa… with a parking ramp built over the Canteen make this location a real adventure!

If you can find it, you won’t be disappointed. Located under a parking garage and no bigger than your grandma’s kitchen, but some of the best loose meat sandwiches you’ll ever have, guaranteed!

Really super delicious and surprisingly cozy inside. The Silk Pie is great but loose meat sandwich is so good I might get two and skip desert in future.

Very nice people and a great sandwich. If you don’t like loose meat sandwiches they also sell hotdogs. That’s it! Simple, Fast and gooood. I guess this is what people around there have talked about for 80 years.

Best sandwich in Ottumwa. Plus nice and friendly staff! It’s my first time here and the owner surprised me with a rose! I’d definitely comeback and bring my friends with me!

An Otown staple. That is why they built the ramp around it. Order a loose meat sandwich and fries. Love this place. If I were in the area I would have one right now! Small and divey but that is part of its charm!

One of Ottumwa’s hidden treasures and landmark. small place maybe 15 – 20 bar seats but they do have all the food for carry out. pie is good too! 10 – 15 bucks per person… or more if you are a real eater! bring cash.

Love the history of this tiny loose meat sandwich shop. Grew up in Ottumwa been to the Canteen several times over the years. Joined the military after graduation been in over 20 years and every time I come home this is a must stop for me. Yes it’s old seems a little out dated inside lol but that is all part of its charm. I enjoy eating my loose meat sandwiches while looking at the old photo of President Kennedy on the wall. The only disappointment to me is the price needs to be lowered way to high for what you get. Plus who ever decided to place a parking lot ramp over the building needs to be fired. But it’s a tradition that I will continue to do every time I stop home.

The best burger o have ever had! I live in CA& every time I visit family in Iowa we come here. The staff is amazing, food is amazing, shakes & pop are good. Sometimes there’s a wait for a seat, but just listen to the stories being told. Great atmosphere

WAY overrated! There is nothing special about this place! I actually thought the place was dirty, dingy and was actually afraid to eat the burger the place looked so filthy.

It’s an institution for a reason. I must stop by every time I’m back in Ottumwa for a canteen(ketchup) and vanilla malt.

I wandered in while traveling by train. From the looks of it, I expected it to be a rough bar. I walked in and was greeted by a friendly waitress. The patrons were mostly local farm folks. I have to say, its a STRANGE place. Just a U shaped counter in the center of which is a pedestal with a gas-fired …“slow cooker” kind of thing — that looked like it dated to The Great Depression”. They just dump raw hamburger in this mystery cooker then spoon it out on to buns — and slather it with ketchup and mustard as you desire. A bit pricey for what it is — I think I paid $ 4 for a single sandwich. The coffee wasnt bad either. It is an experience. If you go to Ottumwa, you need to do three things: 1) visit the museum at the train station 2) stay at the Hotel Ottumwa 3) visit the Canteen.

Any restaurant that manages to stay afloat since 1936 is worth checking out when you are a stranger in town. This is one of those restaurants, but just make sure you bring cash(credit not accepted). While the«grub» is not the best I have ever tasted, there is a hospitality and charm about this place that just makes you glad to have stopped by. The ladies working the restaurant are as Iowa-nice as you can imagine. The malts and pies are great too, so make sure you save room. So visit Ottumwa IA(home to the Radar character from M*A*S*H*) and stop by for a visit.

Nothing fancy, but everything was great. There is just something cozy about this place. Not sure if it’s because you’re being served by a nice grandma, or just how friendly everyone is. Not many menu options, but they have the loose meat sandwich perfected. Not to mention finishing lunch with a great piece of pie

Part of the trip from Houston to Ottumwa must include at least a few canteens! The best ever!

I have been coming here since I was a child. My parents used to go here when they dated in the 50’s. It’s legendary. In Hawaii we make«Canteen» burgers and everyone loves them. Coming back in two weeks after being away from SE Iowa for 18 years. This is one place that will be high on the priority list! I’m getting sentimental just thinking about it!

«What? You want a plate? Ok fancy pants…» Not an actual quote as the workers are very nice, but there are seriously no plates. Loose meat sandwiches. Simple bit tasty. Under a Parking garage. Awesomely divey in the best way.
