This place is amazing!!! We had the beef tibs and lamb stew. Both were phenomenal with their injera. The staff is really friendly. If you come, prepare to wait for your food for a little bit because they make it fresh.

What a treasure! Amazing food and great service here at this hidden gem of a restaurant. If you can’t find it(the roads in Ottumwa are hard to follow because of perpetual construction) don’t give up; it is well worth seeking out! Spiced as you like it, the exotic flavors will truly entertain your palate. And the people here are really pleasant and take obvious pride in what they do. Wish we lived here, we’d definitely come back again and again!

This is a great place. I don’t know how we got so lucky as to have a phenomenal Ethiopian restaurant in Ottumwa, but I’m so glad they are here! Definitely go when you have some time to spend because it is a an experience worth savoring. Also, the coffee is amazing.

Wonderful Ethiopian in Ottumwa — who’d have thought??? We found it via the Unilocal reviews, and I will 2nd, 3rd, and 4th the reviews. This place is the real deal — flavorful, spicy Ethiopian, the best I’ve had since living in Seattle many years ago. I had the Lamb Wat — a bit surprised by the bones but the sauce was wonderful. The lentils and potatoes were also good, and the spongy bread was perfect for sopping up every last drop. Please take the time to get through the construction(speed it up, please, DOT!!!) and spend a meal at this gem.

The vegetarian combination dish was delish! And my bf loved the lamb plate that he ordered. Also, highly recommended is the mango drink — a perfect accompaniment to the meal. The service was excellent! It’s worth following the detour signs while Ottumwa cleans up the main access road — the adventure awaits you!

This restaurant should be put on the 100 places to eat in Iowa. They have amazing food and amazing service, our waiter is always so sweet and helpful. I highly recommend this place to everyone. Try the beef tibs, chicken, lentil sambusas, and the clove tea too! All main dishes come with vegetables, lentils and salad so there’s no need for everyone to order separately, it’s family style, it comes all together on a big platter. A great place to bring family and friends, and our kids love the food and eating with their hands!

I can’t believe this restaurant is in Ottumwa! I stopped here for lunch and had the beef tipes, which comes with several sides, salad, lentils, chickpeas, cabbage. Also had delicious iced tea. Some of the best Ethiopian food I’ve ever had, moderately priced and excellent service. My only regret is that I didn’t have time to stay for coffee. If you are in SE Iowa, actually anywhere in Iowa, you should come to Wapello County and give it a try. One word of warning right now the street is torn up and there is a several block long detour. ITISWORTHIT! Don’t give up and follow the orange signs, you’ll be glad you did.

Adventure awaits those who decide to eat here. My experience was terrific! It was a late night when my curiosity brought me to Safari. The cook was the only other soul in the place, which means more guests will accompany me next time, and after saying hello and helping me through the menu he could heard in the kitchen preparing my meal. That is always a good sign! The food was well spiced and very delicious. It is amazing to find a gem like this in such a small city. Many more visits to are sure to come. Munch ON!

This is a diamond in the rough restaurant in Ottumwa. We stopped at this restaurant while driving through Iowa. Wow, what a great decision. Both the lamb and chicken were amazing! The owner came by and chatted with us and was extremely nice. We will definitely be stopping here again on another trip.

Best meal in Ottumwa. Don’t be put off be the location or building. This restaurant is a diamond in the rough. The food is excellent, but be prepared to wait since each meal is prepared fresh. The owner is very helpful if you have never had Ethiopian cuisine before. Don’t expect any utensils for the meal either. Most meals are eaten with a traditional flat bread with your fingers. From mild to spicy, chicken to lamb, there will be something for every taste.

Ah, here’s an interesting restaurant. The cooks are from Africa! And it’s so different and good tasting. Most meals are served on a big round sheet of flat sourdough flatbread. Its as big as a washcloth. You tear little piece off bread, pinch a piece of spicy beef stew with the piece of bread. Very foreign method but so enjoyable. Meals I have are there are scrum-dilly-umptious. We stayed for hours, talkung to son of owner Quite an entertaining night. We’ve been 4 more times to this top Iowa Africa rest

This is the restaurant that got me to create a Unilocal account just so I could leave a review. This is now my top restaurant in Ottumwa. Great food, friendly staff willing to explain the food and customs. There are not many restaurants in Ottumwa that offer a different set of choices, so it is good to find one that strays outside the normal Midwest fare. Highly recommended.

Fantastic Ethiopian cuisine! The food, service and atmosphere was exceptional. More vegetarian options Friday through Sunday for now, but the chicken was great– well prepared. I was told that the menu was expanding!!! Samuel, please open your restaurant fairfield!

Excellent restaurant! The service couldn’t have been better, and the waiter was so helpful and kind. Everything is fresh and prepared on site. The coffee beans are even roasted in house! You can tell that they’re really passionate about what they do. A unique and refreshing experience. Can’t wait to go back.
