Not a lot of Halal sandwich options. Terrible expensive produce. 2 stars for all the Overland Park MILFS.

As «traditional» grocery stores go, this Hy-​Vee is fairly awesome. The truth is that we get most of our groceries at Trader Joe’s and Natural Grocers with a bit of Sprouts mixed in, but this Hy-​Vee is a pretty good alternative and not far out of the way for us on our way home from work.
When they built this store, they left plenty of room for an organic section which is fairly large and has a lot of things we buy regularly. My only beef with Hy-​Vee in regards to their organics is they’re mostly over-​priced; however once in a blue moon, you’ll find a pretty good sale price.
They have also included a pretty nice section for cosmetics and «girly stuff» as my hubby likes to call it. I’m a fan of Zum products and I love that they have a pretty astounding variety at this store including bulk bath salts.
The store is huge with an excellent variety of conventional groceries and a well-​stocked butcher area. Upstairs, they have a restaurant/​bar area where they have a pretty decent beer selection and nightly specials. The food there is not spectacular, but it’s always better if you can wash it down with a beer. And isn’t grocery shopping better with beer?
The store is clean and well-​laid out and it’s pretty easy to find what you need. The staff is always pleasant and efficient so the checkout lines move pretty quickly.

I’m a frequent at this HyVee, but greatly impressed today. Evening before Thanksgiving and have to admit not excited to grocery shop. But to my surprise it was a great experience. Even though the store was packed I was able to get right in, grab my last minute items and race to the registers. I almost paused in awe… all the registers were up and running, no wait AT ALL. Woot Woot… rock on HyVee! Show them how its done!

I’m writing a review for Hy-​Vee, y’all.
I’ll let that sink in for a second.
Why am I writing a review for Hy-​Vee, you might ask? Well it just so happens that this Hy-​Vee has its own sports bar and restaurant inside. Which seemed so utterly ridiculous that I just had to try it. Thankfully I have very classy friends who were willing to do this with me :). So here’s what you need to know:
1) They actually have really good drink specials on Royals game nights. For example, when we went all local beers were $ 3. And by «local» they don’t mean Boulevard wheat — think Boulevard Tank 7, Tallgrass Ethos IPA, Martin City Abbey, KC Bier Co Dunkel… for $ 3??? I’m still recovering from the sticker shock of being in LA for a year, but even by Midwestern standards that is crazy cheap for any microbrew.
2) They actually have really good food specials as well. Again, on Royals game night apparently there is a $ 10 AYCE wings deal. I had a $ 5 brat + fries. My friend had a $ 4 flatbread pizza. My other friend opted for a $ 23 ribeye steak but hey, if you’re getting a ribeye, $ 23 is a steal… I won’t comment on the quality of the food (oh, ok I can’t resist — it’s just fine, no better or worse than any other random sports bar). Know why? BECAUSE IT’S A HY-​VEE.
3) Service is awesome! Though they are a little short-​staffed when it gets crowded (yes, when it gets crowded — more on this later), but both bartenders/​servers are super sweet and accommodating.
4) It gets crowded on Royals game nights! The Hy-​Vee bar gets crowded!!! What!??
Yes, I know this review sounds like it’s for a restaurant and not a Hy-​Vee, which is so bizarre (it’s a Hy-​Vee!!) yet totally appropriate at the same time (there’s a restaurant/​bar! IN THE HY-​VEE!!). I’m still a bit baffled myself and have decided that maybe the way to go is to come back here until I can finally reconcile this in my head…
4 stars to the Hy-​Vee bar. Never thought I’d utter those words in the same sentence.

All hail the MEGA-​VEE! This place is not only massive, but impressive in its selection of groceries, value on items, and quality of produce and freshly made ready to eat items. I will say that sometimes you can find things cheaper at Price Chopper, but the shopping experience here is just so far superior to other nearby grocery stores. I can always find what I’m looking for and they have a wide variety of local, and organic food items that makes this a fun place to shop and find new things to try. Additionally they have Jack Stack seasoned chicken usually for around 3 dollars which is an insane deal, and their chinese food is surprisingly tasty when I want something quick for under 10 dollars. I’ve also heard that they have a full bar upstairs. I haven’t tried it out as there is something odd to me about a bar in a grocery store, but they earn extra points in my book for trying something new!

I really wanted to like to store it is huge and seemed like it would be a great option for me. However I have been nothing but disappointed. They are always out of everything especially bread and a few other staple items. The staff is very friendly and tries to help but is frustrating for me to have to make a trip to another grocery store to fill my grocery list.

Can’t say enough good things about this grocery. I LOVE their meat department and how helpful they are. The employees always seem to be enjoying the day, and they definitely go out of their way to help. Keep up the good work!

This HyVee is pretty massive. They’ve got a huge selection of pretty much ALL the things. The produce section, meat department, bread selection, etc are all top notch and some of the better ones I’ve seen around KC. The place has pretty decently wide aisles which is good because it’s a pretty busy place but manages to not feel all that busy. Again, if you are looking for something that isn’t really odd or out there, this place will have it and probably have a store brand, name brand or 3 and maybe a premium brand of whatever it is.
As a bonus, they tend to play some decent music and not stereotypical grocery store music (as a former employee of a grocery store, I notice these types of things).
Nice store, always clean, staff seem to be on top of things, good selection, good departments… One of the better grocery stores you will find in KC, I suspect.

After moving from Pennsylvania, it has been difficult to find grocery stores that compare to Wegman’s (e.g. the best grocery store on the planet). Wegman’s is a grocery store on the East Coast (mainly NY and PA) that has it’s own brand that is wholesome and cheap, has beautiful meats & seafoods, has a huge selection of ethnic goods, a bulk section, the friendliest employees ever… I could go on and on. Well anyway… this Hy-​Vee location is the closest thing I have found to Wegman’s (only this location — I have discovered that not all locations are created equal). It has (almost) everything that I love in grocery stores.
When you walk in, there is a natural foods section that has vegan/​vegetarian frozen/​refrigerated goods, natural/​organic/​gluten free foods, and a bulk section. I usually browse this section and get sucked into buying expensive, delicious, wholesome things I don’t always need. But I will tell you what I do need — Chocolate Espresso Beans!!! They are $ 10.99 a pound and worth every penny.
I also really love the produce section. Everything is always fresh and there is a large selection of goods. It is not super cheap but not too expensive either. Nothing I have bought here has ever gone bad before I ate it (that happens too often for me).
The cheese and dairy has a large enough selection, but is not cheap. I usually just buy what is on sale. The meats are not very cheap at all. I usually do not buy too much meat here. Guess it doesn’t bother me too much since I am not a huge meat eater. They also do have their own brand of a lot of things, which reduces costs.
The employees are OK. Usually they are friendly enough, but not really the best either.
Obviously not perfect, but the best I’ve found in the Kansas City area. So 5 stars from me!

This is a good store! I go here to get lunch or pick up up something for dinner. Good salad bar!

Today while attempting to shop in your store, I could not find the one thing I really needed. I walked around the whole store looking for an employee to ask for help and finally saw a guy who worked there. He walked directly in front of me and I said «excuse me could you help me find something?» … To my surprise the employee of hyvee walked STRAIGHT PAST ME! Without acknowledging at all that I asked for help. He definitely heard me too because he turned and looked at me standing there and kept walking. Another shopper heard me and saw that the employee ignored me and said «you won’t find help here that jackass ignored us too». Frustrated, I went to find another employee for help finding my item. Then I saw TWO young ladies who also worked there walking towards the back. I said «oh maybe they will help! Excuse me mam can you tell me where I could find this?» TO MY SUPRISE, they, too, IGNORED ME! One of the girls looked at me and looked back at the other employee who worked there, laughed and kept walking. At this point I was beyond annoyed and had no interest in shopping at hyvee anymore. I then left, not buying anything, and went to the neighborhood walmart up the street. So pleased to say, all the friendly faces there helped me find my item right away! I will NEVER go back to hyvee again. Poor poor customer service. I will make sure to tell everyone I know about this so they quit giving a shit company business. You won’t be open long if this is how you treat your customers.

I’m back in Overland Park for another extended work trip (last visited during opening in March 2013) and my first day in Kansas, where do I myself, not once but twice? That’s right — Hyvee! It’s just like I remember: big but inviting, clean, good selection and prices, friendly customer service. I love the convenience of 24 hours.
In the morning before even checking into my home place, I stopped by to pick up some groceries. Hyvee has great prices and especially on basic items; almond milk (smaller selection than my home store tho), yogurt, frozen meals all had sale prices. I eye the Shatto milk, it’s so fresh in it’s glass containers, and the freeze section lights up as you walk by, inviting a glance into its doors.
I’m back for dinner at the salad buffet — honestly one of my favorites places to eat in KS is this kitchen; you can’t beat the prices and the deal, ESP as a budget traveler. Salad bar is $ 6 + tax for one plate (load up!) or $ 7 all you can eat. I load up on steak, kale (it’s the best here, I need to get this recipe), edamame, quinoa salad and other protein goodies — it’s good and fresh and the best deal! There’s daily deals in the pizza, Chinese, rotisserie and a sports bar upstairs that serves drinks and other foods.
Also you can get a punch card: by 10 salads get 1 free!
I will get this within a week probably haha; what work trip? let’s be honest: I’m really back in KS for Hyvee!
Time to peruse the desserts or maybe take some ice cream home!

This Hy-​Vee is just a happy place! It’s not the most convenient location from my house, but my son loves shopping here (pushing his little green cart), eating a snack in the restaurant (where food from the store can be brought in or ordered from a server), grabbing a free cookie from the bakery or sampling a puff near the bulk food.
The store is spacious without being overwhelming and I like the Caribou coffee near the front. The staff also seems friendlier and happier at this location as well! I still haven’t made it upstairs. One time I have to come without the little ones!

Yet another pleasant surprise during one of my many experimental trips to new grocery stores outside of my tried and true places (Nature’s Pantry, Whole Foods, Natural Grocers, Green Acres).
This store is in a league of it’s own. And I am impressed. I often face grocery store disappointment due to my ridiculous dietary restrictions. So I went in fully prepared to walk out with only part of my list obtained, and a stop at Whole Foods on the way home. But nope. My expectations were met, AND exceeded.
They have pretty much covered everything, including a bar /​restaurant area upstairs.
The space itself felt open, and not at all cramped. I get irritable in stores where I am in such close quarters that I can’t read my ingredient labels. This HyVee provided me with all of the space I need to be the vigilant, detail minded shopper that I am.
They have a great bulk section, organic selection, and an insane Health Market section which included Gluten-​free options which were clearly marked.
I found many things that I normally can only get at specialty stores. And I had a positive shopping experience. This place isn’t even in my hood. But I will be back.
It’s worth checking out. If the shopping isn’t enough of a pull, go grab some breakfast or a drink.

I have given it several months since my first review, and I stick with four stars. I often stop here for the salad bar after working out, and I feel healthy knowing I am getting fresh ingredients. I can also pick up a giant house-​made pork tenderloin on an egg bun for $ 3.99!!! I can shovel in the food, and that sandwich is three meals for me AND tastes great! One of my favorites is the Greek bowtie pasta salad. Feta, caesar, grape tomatos, spinach, and black olives, mmm! Now then, I know how to cook, and I realize I can get more for my money by doing so, but it is just me, so I actually feel like New HyVee is saving me money by offering healthy, fresh single-​serving items like they do.
The aisles are wide, and this helps accommodate the ridiculous weekend crowds.
I haven’t tried the bar yet. With a sports bar across the street at Johnny’s, I probably won’t. This HyVee remains a hit, in my book!

So I’ve been a long-​term customer of the 91^st and Metcalf Hy-​Vee (now closed) and I joined the Oak Park Mall Hy-​Veers who were also directed to this mega Hy-​Vee when theirs closed at the same time.
Huge, clean space. They have a freaking sports bar in here.
Me, I’m a Whole Foods guy, but I come here for the same reasons I always went to the old one:

Parking is a bit of a challenge at this location. Hopefully they figure it out.

Holy hell this place rocks.
I came opening week and had breakfast upstairs in the restaurant. Breakfast in a grocery store? I know, I was skeptical too– but it was actually good. You can get your own breakfast from a buffet line downstairs, but I opted for table service, gobbling up my breakfast sandwich and cinnamon rolls while overlooking the vast ponderosa which is «mega» Hy-​Vee.
Once downstairs, we started our 2 hour shopping trip. I am hoping to cut future trips down to one hour, but there is just so much to see! The prepared food area is just as god as it gets. We bought a slab of ribs from a guy that had smoked them only hours earlier. Sliced pork loin, rotisserie chicken and pulled pork was also divine. Just wait until you see the fresh baked bread area! OMG, so many to choose from, plus you can even get half loaves slices, so no more wasted bread.
The bulk food aisle is really amazing. Not just peanuts and brown rice, but some really great chocolate candy and snack mixes. A scale instantly prints out your bar code, so no more writing down numbers on tags. There are other great details like refrigerator lights on sensors to avoid wasted electricity.
We came here with a plan of hitting Whole Foods afterward to get some unique items. Thing is, we found 99% of everything we needed right there.
Let me just leave you with this-​already peeled clementines sold in containers and crab rangoon with jalapeño peppers. Darn you Hy-​Vee, you thought of everything!!!

Brand-​spanking new store is HUGE, clean, and staffed with a whole lot of very enthusiastic people. Almost too many, but I assume staffing will drop to a more normal operational level once the grand-​opening month is past. Right now it seems you can’t take three steps without someone trying to assist you. Not that it’s a bad thing, mind; I just don’t think it’s going to stay that way as things die down a bit.
The prepared foods/​restaurant section is AWESOME, although a bit disorganized at the moment, it doesn’t flow particularly well. You can pick out your food downstairs from the Chinese counter, salad bar, etc. — or you can order food upstairs at your table. That menu is bar-​style food, burgers and wings and stuff. They also have an honest-​to-​god bar behind the food-​court tables. Beer & wine only for now, but they are looking at expanding it to a full bar, according to the tender we asked.
The daily specials are great! Steak dinner on Thursdays, with a baked potato & a vegetable, for seven bucks. Five-​dollar fish fry on Fridays, although I don’t know if that will still be the special after Easter. Everything we’ve tried has been good.
As far as the rest of the store, well, it’s just a grocery store, but it gets points for being well-​stocked and well-​organized. The produce looks good, and they have a lot of variety that you don’t always see at smaller stores. They had a big display of dragon-​fruit last time I was in. Also, a big frozen-​foods section carries every kind of ice cream you can think of. Love it.

I wish I could teleport it to Florida!

This update is for the second floor bar and restaurant. It’s a bit hard to spot in the midst of this huge market, but if you look towards your right as you enter the store and head for the sign that says Kitchen you’ll find stairs and an elevator that take you upstairs.
Right now things are a bit in disarray as they get used to what they’re doing. There were a lot of servers, it seemed, but I had to ask for mine to come take an order. She was very pleasant once she got there. There’s a small menu right now with appetizers and sandwiches. For more substantial entrees apparently you have to pick out what you want at the prepared food counters downstairs. They give you a ticket that you then give to your server and they get the food for you, plus drinks, etc.
I had the Reuben, which was on the menu, and it was good and generous, accompanied with some good cole slaw. I washed it down with an Angry dry cider that I thought was remarkably good — first time with this label and it’s quite dry and tastes a lot like a French hard cider. Prices were very reasonable — the sandwich and cider came to $ 11.
Things will settle down and they’ll figure out the service issues. Once that happens they may add menu items. They said they have a full Sunday brunch so that might be worth checking out if you’re in the neighborhood because the prices are probably right!
The market has been packed both times I was there — people in the area seem pretty excited about it and are checking it out like mad! I guess they’ve gotten over the two smaller markets closing, since this one has such a larger selection of things!
