I try to eat at a place more than once before reviewing, but since there are no reviews available I feel the need to pitch in based on three meals, my own and those of my two guests. First of all, the place is a hidden gem. No one other than golfers know of its existence because it is relatively new and barely advertises. The setting is a converted dairy farm high on a ridge surrounded by beautiful fields and forests. The dining room is casual and pub-like, nothing special. The outdoor dining is where the place shines and could shine more. Half a dozen tables on a veranda overlooking the greens and the hills beyond. The service was casual and prompt. The food was competent but nothing special. Burgers, salads, pizzas. One gets the sense that a food service company has taken the leading role in menu design and preparation of the food. No local ingredients listed, no sense of place or seasonality. In an agricultural region, these are missed opportunities. Likewise the beer list. Once wonders if the owners didn’t just delegate the beer selection to their beverage distributor with the request, «give us what everyone else serves.» Luckily Yuengling Lager is among the otherwise banal yellow drafts that everyone else serves. Same for soft drinks, «give us all the usual coke or pepsi things. Keep the HFCS levels high. Make sure there’s nothing made in-house or fresh. Don’t use your imagination.» So, a beautiful view with pedestrian food that could become a real magnet if the owners would hire a chef with an imagination and embrace the craft brew and gastropub movement that is sweeping the region. Or, they can remain a sleepy golf club and people will still be happy because the view is unmatched for miles around. My other suggestions would be that the owners perform noisy greens maintenance outside the dinner and lunch hours so that diners could enjoy the view without tractor noise and without wondering if the stuff they are spraying on the grass is wafting their way. Replacing the sputtering, barely muffled gasoline-powered golf carts with something more quiet and less smelly is probably asking too much.
