They are awesome! That’s how I feel on our«good» days. The days I come home to a broken crate, half eaten sofa and trash lovingly placed throughout my home, I question why on earth they let me adopt a dog.(Maybe because I still have her, and still love her, even after all that.) So it was late October, and I had lost my little Dixie girl to bone cancer. To top off the heartbreak, I read the book, The Lost Dogs. I realized that I could ease two heartaches by adopting another little girl who needed a home and a mommy to love her. I checked shelters and rescues all over the area for the perfect addition to our family. The problem was that my big boy, Rebel, wasn’t crazy about any of the well behaved, adult dogs I introduced him to. I filled out an application and took it with me to meet this sweet little puppy. When we went to meet her, she had been sent down to the vet school at State to be spayed. They adopted her out. The shelter called, and I said«No problem. I’m just happy she has a home.» Well, they wound up getting her back right after I met an older dog that Reb was okay with. Out of mere obligation, I went to meet the little blonde pup they called Happy Feet. Turns out, Reb loved her! So did I. It was love at first sight, and since my vet reference and other stuff had already been checked out, we were able to take her home that day, along with a guinea pig that someone had dropped off there. We went back to visit a few times, and I could tell they were excited to see her. They really care about the pets awaiting their permanent homes. They take great care in placing them in the right homes. Jazzy,(which is short for Sweet Jasmine — the dog on the cover of The Lost Dogs, and also an issue of Sports Illustrated) was even excited to see them, but a little afraid she was going to be left again. She especially loved her caregiver, who came from the back to see her. They have 5k runs, pet costume contests, yappy hours at local restaurants, Woofstock, and a variety of other fundraisers to support this wonderful organization. They, no doubt, have the nicest animal shelter I’ve ever seen. It sits right next to the new dog park. If you’re ready to open your home and heart to a furry friend, I would definitely recommend adopting your next family member from them! If you’re not ready for that just yet, they can always use volunteers and fosters.
