i love the commissary! because it has everything you’d want to get at a grocery store and everything is so cheap and on top of that there’s no tax you have to pay. i’ve been coming here since i was a kid and my family used to make these big monthly grocery trips there… i think my dad(who was in the navy reserves) had this restriction where he could only go there a few times a year — not sure if that’s really true or just something my parents did to save the hassle of going there too much. anyway, i’m particularly fond of the asian food section because they carry all kinds of instant noodles(my fave when there’s nothing else to eat!) snacks & sauces, and the frozen food isle because they have the organic choices and specialty foods that you may not be able to find at albertsons or vons. it’s never been too crowded the times that i have come in, but it probably does get busy on the weekends. if you’re not in the military or in a military family, i suggest you make friends with someone in the military so you can get access to this place.

This is a pretty decent commissary. I mean, yah, you see the random old filipinos either bagging your stuff or outside by the exchange playing mahjong and stuff in their flip flops who like to blow smoke in your face or oblivious to everyone when they walk slowly but surely across the parking lot filipinos. But still, you can’t beat the tax free deals and the already low prices compared to like Vons or Ralphs. And you can use coupons too. I don’t normally shop here since I live in San Diego, but I do come up here from time to time doing some Navy business or when I come up north to LA and bring my mom for some commissary/exchange shopping. So I come here at least 3 – 4 times a year. And although it’s not a rich Navy town compared to SD, they still have a place to take care of both the active and retired guys that still live in this area. Most commissaries I’ve been in have at least 1 day off. Well these guys are open everyday. Mondy through Friday, they close at 1900. Saturdays, close at 1800, and Sundays at 1700. It’s a bit smaller than the commissaries in Miramar or 32nd st SD, but then again, Port Hueneme is small Navy town. Still you’ll get all you need in this commissary.

Bx is better than any we have been to from Alaska, Seattle, Spokane to the East coast. So many brands and stuff that we could be at Kohl’s, Macy’s, REI, or Ace. It has food, hardware and housewares. Wow, thanks for all the selection and quality in one place.

You seriously cannot beat the prices at the commissary! I load my grocery cart fully, including the undercarriage, to the point things are falling off and rarely does my grocery bill exceed $ 200. The only drawbacks are the commissary-packaged meats aren’t always that fresh and the produce can be really hit and miss, especially with the onions and potatoes. Other than that, it rocks.

I don’t agree much with the existence of the military, or at least some of the roles it has to live for. However, one great thing did come out of it: the Commissary. I’m too old now to have a military ID, so I have to depend on my parents to get me my necessities. I still find it weird that people go to places like Lucky’s, Vons, and Albertson’s to get their groceries. I just can’t imagine my life without the Commissary.

My Dad is a Navy Veteran and I’ve lived here all my life and I hardly do the bulk of my grocery shopping at anywhere else but the Commissary. Its only open to Military families(and Employees of the store). I know the Majority of the Employees here – especially all the Filipino ladies.(I’m half and my Mom is friends with a lot of the people here. I grew up with them). Like Emari H. said they now carry Organic fruit but they don’t have much of a selection. They have a Small Bakery and a Deli that can get busy but they always have freshly made French Bread available and also they started making their own Rotisserie Chickens and hot wings – albeit they’re way smaller than Costco’s. A few gripes I have is every few years once you get used to where everything is, They move things around. They just did that I think sometime last year and everyone was complaining and lost. Sometimes they don’t have some things in stock and it can get very crowded in here during the weekends. My sister just started working here now and she says they get pretty packed(If you’re considering working here they pay pretty damn well actually). The accept WIC here as well. I almost feel bad for reviewing this place because its practically a second home(Seriously if you need to find me and I’m not home I’m most likely on base in this store) and because I know not everyone on Unilocal has access to it. The Best part? FRIGGENCHEAPER than«outside» grocery stores. Unless I’m looking for something specific that I know the Commissary doesn’t carry(I.E. Mirin that I got at Ralph’s), then I’ll go to the other local stores. I’m almost fearing turning 23 when I lose all my benefits as a dependent. =(

I LOVE being able to shop at the commissary! The groceries outside the base are WAY too expensive and now I know how everyone is really being ripped off. The vegetables and fruits are cheap! Meats and all other items are so much cheaper than at a civilian grocery store. What’s missing is my Safeway/Von’s awesome baked goods so I have to go there for breads since I’m very attached to their breads. They don’t have too much choices of Organic items so if you are into Organics, you’ll have to find another place or just make do with the few choices they offer. They pretty much have everything from groceries to household goods like cleaning supplies, paper goods, medicines, pet supplies, books and cards, etc. What can I say, I feel privileged and LOVE military perks :-D
