Sagamore Hill National Historic Site

Beautiful grounds however the tour guides are extremely rude. The tour of the house was all sold out, therefore, we decided to go into the house to look around since the door was open. There were other people looking around that weren’t on the tour also. There was a tour in session. My dad took a video of 2 rooms. As he’s finished, this cranky tour guide says to my dad in front of his tour, «Are you happy now you got some videos. There is NO camera allowed here.» We didn’t know there were no cameras allowed, however since we are guests and he works there, he should have said it in a RESPECTFUL way. especially in front of his tour with about 15 people. He spoke absolutely disgusting and condesceding to us. About an hour later, we went back to see when the next tour was. We saw a new tour guide who abruptly said the tours were sold out and closed the door as I’m standing there. I can’t believe they get away with talking to guests like that. The only plus was that it was free to walk around. I won’t be returning though. They need some friendly tour guides and employees there. Not miserable old people who look mad to be giving the tours.

Had looked forward for years to visiting Sagamore Hill. Waited patiently through the years of restoration closure and drove hours to visit during the first week of reopening. Unfortunately, our tour was a flat disappointment. Our guide was a dour young woman who rushed the group through the house. Commentary was low-​level and uninspired. Lingering even a moment in an effort actually to see a room bought uncomfortable stares. She wasn’t incompetent, but the tour wasn’t remotely welcoming. To improve, this NHS should offer an optional intensive, smaller tour, e.g., as Monticello does. At 14 the groups are too large for the tight and warm spaces of the house, and 45 minutes aren’t enough to appreciate the site reasonably. Came away feeling the tours are packed for the buck rather than the customer’s experience. Elsewhere, one visitor center ranger was personable, though another commented on our being «late» despite being 15 minutes early on a pre-​reserved tour for which no one else had assembled. Again, just not welcoming. Three stars on being Roosevelt’s house.

We were here on a Saturday afternoon. The grounds are huge! We love the nature trail, that can also lead you to a «private beach». Nice place for a romantic afternoon walk. This place is also great to spend the afternoon with the kids or your dog.
When we were there, the Theodore Roosevelt’s home was closed for some renovation but the museum is open.
Admission to the site is free & plenty of parking.

The museum is open to the public. There is very strong odor… either from the old carpet or the furniture? Very small museum.
They have video showing the history of their home. It is very informative.

We spent a nice late-​Spring afternoon at Sagamore Hill. The Roosevelt House is currently closed for renovations, they started this spring (2012) and will be on it for a couple of years. We wandered around the grounds and looked in a few windows. They weren’t lying; there is a lot of work going on inside. We sat down in the rocking chairs on the porch and spent quite a while there — what a great place to spend an afternoon!
The Roosevelt Museum was excellent. It was well designed and produced, had a logical flow to it, and gave just the right amount of information about TR and the events that made him who he was and the ways he changed the course of American history.
I definitely recommend checking the place out, even if the house is closed for a couple of years.

My boyfriend and I visited the Sagamore House for the first time and had a really great experience. We went on a friday afternoon around 2pm and got in without a problem. A couple of things to note if you are planning a trip:
–The Roosevelt Museum at Old Orchard is FREE.
–Only guided tours are available for the Roosevelt Home (since someone stole an artifact a few years back).
–Guided tours are $ 5/​adult
–Tours are given on the hour every hour.
–NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF ANY KIND is allowed inside of the Roosevelt home.
–The grounds surrounding the home are free and accessible from dawn to dusk

Spent a lovely afternoon at Sagamore Hill — there is plenty to keep you busy: Roosevelt’s house, a Museum commemorating his years before, during and after presidency, a nature walk and beach. Get there EARLY in the afternoon, at the latest, as you may only enter the house with a guided tour ($ 5, although the museum and nature trails are free) the last tour being at 4pm but selling out often hours earlier. We arrived around 2:45 and all tours were sold out. The house offers a 4:15 first-​floor only abbreviated tour for $ 3 and this was really enjoyable for us — the things to see such as library, dining room and Teddy’s game are all on the first floor, except for bedrooms and TR’s gunroom on the 3^rd floor.
There are picnic benches, but the only food at the site is a vending machine. Bring lunch, it is certainly a nice enough atmosphere to warrant a few hours.
