Absolutely memorable hike that can’t be beat; you get to see lava flows(breakouts of the Peace Day flow) in Kalapana and, most impressive, the ocean entry at Kupa’pa’u, at sunset and then glowing in the dark. These are memorable sights that are impressive, unique, and truly amazing – not to be missed! David follows closely what’s going on with the volcano and is very knowledgeable; unfortunately the other guide is not as much. The guiding is mostly limited to where you’re going; don’t expect much in terms of interpretative introductions about the volcano activity or in-depth explanations on the trail(although David will provide very exhaustive answers to any questions you might have); as such, if you can, schedule a visit to the national park service first to put what you’re going to see into perspective. The hike is ~6 miles round trip over uneven terrain, and as such is not for the unfit. Bring water, cameras and binoculars; flashlights will be provided but if you have a headlamp, bring it too. Note: the B&B(as per prior poster) is now closed.

David Ewing and his other tour guide, Skylar provide excellent walking tours over private lava fields. Contact David at or(808) 315‑2256 to set up a guided tour. David and his wife also run a bed and breakfast, but they provide tours for everyone. Pros: Excellent way to get a personalized walking tour of the lava flows on private property. Very knowledgeable. We did a night tour, which was amazing-the lava was gorgeous and the stars were so bright. They provided flashlights, but you may want to bring a head lamp and you definitely need to bring water, good shoes, and maybe a snack(like marshmallows for roasting). The hike is approx 2.5 miles out to see the active lava and Skylar scouted out some other areas which had more movement. David was also flexible with tour times. Cons: The terrain is not a stroll in the park, make sure you are prepared. It is a good distance from Volcano National Park and from Hilo, but worth it.
