kind of sad… apparently Corps of Engineers spend millions… then town didn’t keep it up… though when Corps put in attempt at controlling waves behind strong breakwater, they seem to have made things much worse… first couple piers were awash when we tried it… local said most boats had left because inside usually worse than outside! Note that Guy Harvey just decided not to manage because of «navigational» issues…

The marina is located in Pahokee(indigenous for saw grass), right on Lake Okeechobee. It’s a relatively new marina so it’s quite clean and modern in appearance. Perhaps it’s because it’s off-season but there were only three or four boats moored there. Several families fished off the municipal pier but didn’t seem to be catching anything. The store is a combo bait shop/museum and gift shop. There’s the hide of a 13.2 foot alligator behind the counter and the girl working there says that’s a ‘small’ one. The prices for the shirts and caps were a bit steep but my friend got one anyway. I was given an interesting history of Pahokkee and the lake. This is the only place where you can drive up and se the lake. The rest is surrounded by dikes, created to prevent the tragedy of the 1928 hurricane which swept through, flooding this town, Clewiston, Belle Grade and others, killing as many as 2,500 people. There’s a KOA campground here, a restaurant, showers and restroom facilities. All well-maintained.
