William Rainey Harper College

Yes, yes, yes. I got my degree here as an adult student. It is a great school that offers so much more than other two-​year schools. The teachers are qualified, professional and treat their students with dignity. I received most of my credits from Harper, and ended up taking three classes at another school after moving to Nashville, TN. I transferred those credits back to Harper because I wanted my degree to say «Harper College.» It really is a great school!

Gez, how do I wish I would have gone here straight out of high school and not COD. Unfortunately I was out of district when I graduated from high school.
I was turned off by community college when I went to COD I felt like I was just tossed into school. I didnt understand what I was doing and lacked guidance. I came from immigrant parents so, I really didn’t have anyone to help me through my decision making since they never went to college. There wasn’t an orientation or supporting staff that helped guide me I was just «there». I took a different route and went to vocational school feeling that was the choice for me.
Fast forward to now, recently I decided it was time to give college a try again so I showed up to Harper (Yes! this time I’m in district) and told them about myself, my career background and what I wanted out of college. Every single step of the way they have provided me with assistance and support. I went to admissions, filled out paperwork, registered. Then I took placement tests, as I’ve been out of school for many years. I Then went to orientation, met with an adviser who helped me pick my classes. Next thing you know Im a college student!
I look forward to attending my classes, my professors so far are great. I can tell they are genuinely interested in helping me, love what they do, and make me feel comfortable. Looking forward to a couple more years at Harper.

The sonography program is the best in the state, maybe the country. The cafeteria has amazing food for a fair price. I love the library as well. Plenty of study space.

The teachers are dedicated and wonderful– particularly the teachers in the psychology and education departments. I have been able to develop close relationships with some of my professors and appreciate their genuine interest in imparting their knowledge onto their students. The quality of faculty is great. There are many professors who teach here who have accomplished great things– one of my teachers worked for NASA and conducted his own research. Several of the professors at Harper also teach at schools like Loyola University, among other well established universities.
My disappointment lies in the students. I am surrounded by kids freshly out of high school who don’t care about education and are only taking classes because their parents forced them to. While I try to take notes during class, there are too many students gossiping, texting, tweeting, sleeping, laughing, and talking over the teacher. It’s frustrating for me, because I have a career goal and need a degree. Meanwhile, for group projects, I get paired up with students who roll their eyes, refuse to talk, and drop the class.
Long story short, teachers are fulfilling. Students, not so much.

The Internet here is slower than two tortoises in a race. I attended here a few years ago and it was bad… back visiting again today and decided to use internet, the service is just as bad as it was.

I realize the place isn’t Harvard, but I was so disappointed in my experience here. I suppose the curriculum was fine enough, but the professors were so disappointing. Some were better than others, of course, but by and large it was pretty terrible. I don’t know if it’s because they weren’t being compensated enough for their time (I only mention that because one teacher told us that teaching our class was «barely pizza money»), but there is such a thing as professional integrity, and they shouldn’t take out things on the students. I would have liked if the teachers held to the students to a higher standard as well, but they didn’t seem to care. I could go on with a list of grievances. Honestly, I think the people working there should be pretty ashamed of themselves.

Harper has been a huge disappointment. My psych 101 class, which meets once a week, the teacher stopes showing up so we got a sub. Due to the time crunch we had a test every other class. My Sociology teacher, had no idea what he was talking about. My English 101 teacher, who never has never instructed a college class had terrible rubrics that made no sense. Harper is good in price but fails in quality. I hope they fix that soon.

I’ve been very happy with my education at Harper College. I have had the opportunity to learn from amazing teachers. As with all schools, I’ve had a few bad teachers… but the great professors far outweigh the bad. I’ve gladly taken every class taught by multiple professors. I’m so happy to be back, building on my associates degree to obtain a certificate.

I am a fan of learning, and even though I have a bachelors degree — I will forever see myself as a student.
Harper keeps education fairly cheap, and the grounds spoiled me. I loved so many professors there and I consider a couple lifelong friends. I highly recommend this educational institution for those that seek knowledge, and are trying to cut college costs down.

I attended Harper part time for 3
years and with the exception of 1,
I had exceptional teachers. They were always available if I had questions, they were challenging, and they really knew the material. The campus is beautiful and in a very convenient location. I never had any problems with FA or the business office. In fact, attending classes there was so simple, I did 99% of the registration and paperwork online. I would definitely recommend this college to anyone looking around.

I’m a graduate student with my bachelors of arts who recently moved to the Harper college area. I decided to go to Harper to fulfill my science and math courses for another bachelors or med school. I had no idea the college was so nice when I applied because I did not go to any of the orientation, but I was very impressed with the college as soon as I pulled up in my car.
I would like to say the college is new construction and therefore is no annoying blocked off areas of renovations like my old school. The school is very clean there is no graffiti anywhere and the bathrooms are always clean as well. Every hallway and door entrance has a hand sanitizer on the wall. There is a great security team there roaming the halls which makes me feel safe.
I’ve taken the principles of biology with mrs. Rovani as my professor and she is one of the most caring and knowledgeable instructors I’ve had in the total of my 5 years of attending school. She will work with you to help you succeed and she tutors for her own class! I would recommend taking any of her classes.

The deans run a great school as far as the regular professors go. But I have to agree that the adjunct teachers are all a flock of flunkies.

Better than most of the colleges around the area. They got the security and big parking lot, it gets full around noon thou. Teachers are cool.

I am glad I went here before going to a actual university. I saved so much money and have very little debt now.
Make sure you research your professors. Some are excellent and want to help you understand the material, and others are just collecting a pay check. FILL OUT THE REVIEWS! Help make Harper better. But overall I have had some really great teachers.
The facility itself is quite pleasant. It’s super big. I hate the parking lot though. It can be quite a pain to travel across that desert.
The science programs are really good too. They have lots of lab equipment. Some colleges are not lucky to have that. A good variety of classes as well.
Counselors are really helpful too. At least for me they were. So don’t be shy to talk to them! They are really good with helping out for transfer students.
Also if you do not want to go to a 4 year school they do offer lots of programs for certain jobs.

Most of us are told that go to a community college and complete your 2 years cheaper and transfer to a 4 year. I wish Harper becomes a 4 year before I’m done. I love not only the campus but the teachers I’ve had.
I’ve been to 2 other community colleges and they just didn’t cut it for me. Note: City Colleges of Chicago are horrible, unappealing, sloppy teachers (that I’ve had), and waste of money.
Best advice is RESEARCH your teachers or you can and will be stuck with a miserable class.
I currently take night classes so many students are adults but it’s been a great mix of people.
I believe that community colleges don’t give you the «College Feel» since there are no dorm rooms, or active students to make friends with. There are sports teams and other great amenities to Harper. The best feature is the range of classes and times. I’m able to be a full time student after work which not many other schools offer along with having Saturday classes.

There are some pretty hot girls to have coffee with :)

I did not get a degree here, but I did take a Zumba class and loved it. Sarah is an amazing instructor and really knows her stuff. Plus it is much cheaper than other gyms and institutions. They have a variety of classes to choose from– I just wish they had more after work hours.

Top notch school! Just go to class and you won’t waste your money. Your teachers care about you passing and will work with you to assure that of happening. Don’t be one of those who never show up or talks all class and then complains that you learned nothing and the teacher is terrible. I see way too much of that. Take classes are Harper for whatever reason you need/​want to take classes. It’ll be worth your while. Don’t forget to STUDY!!!

If you do your research wisely on professor before you sign up for them you can learn a lot in 2 years going here with great tuition costs and awesome facilities. This is a great place to take 2 years of your undergrad before transferring to a full university while saving a lot of money and getting a lot of individual attention from your professors. Because of the cheap tuition, it’s also a great place to try out a lot of different classes if you aren’t sure what you want to major in yet.

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience at college. I studied Fashion Design and must say that the program is top notch and you get an amazing set of creative professional professors that care about the students 110%.
Harper has consistently produced year after year winners in the Chicago Student design scene and the program is so good Harper Design students compete regularly on an international level in Paris as well. Need I say more?
Besides the excellent design program to get my degree I did have to take plenty of academic courses that were quite excellent which I had already known but it was emphasized even more when I transitioned into University and noticed some of the classes I was required to take weren’t as good as the ones at Harper.
