The Blue Pig is the best art gallery in the Grand Junction/Mesa County area, hands down. It has a range of prices and media, from oil to pottery to papier-mâché’ to watercolor, sculpture and jewelry, all from sophisticated, top notch local artists. Tourists don’t realize that we have a huge number of truly skilled and imaginative artists living on the western slope, as the first commenter’s comments show, but that is the case, and the Blue Pig knows it. Art displays at the Blue Pig change often enough that you can come once a month and probably see mostly new stuff. Plus, there are several truly great eateries all within a block of the Pig, including the best bakery in the valley, the Slice of Life Bakery, the Red Rose(I recommend the Vietnamese combo rice noodle bowl — don’t miss their egg rolls!) and Inari’s Bistro, if you’re there late enough for dinner. And don’t miss the gorgeous walking and biking path along the Colorado River, just down the street.

Stopped off at the Blue Pig during a break from a weekend wine tasting adventure. Not to be offensive, but I was pleasantly surprised by what I found there. As an art gallery in a small farming/tourist town, I expected one of two things: bad art, or, worse, country kitsch aimed at tourists.(I’m not talking about decent folk art – I like folk art – I’m talking about«stick-a-flag-on-it or weather some wood and it’ll sell» kind of crap). Blue Pig has neither! It’s a lovely space that is well laid out. It is easy to walk through, and most importantly view the displayed work. The gallery is merchandised by artist so it’s almost as though each artist has his/her own little store within the space. And the art was good. Neither pretentious nor elementary, the art was of the caliber found in larger city galleries but at a small town price. I wished I was in a position to buy more, but I did get one item and will be back the next time I come through town. If you feel an urge to shop in between wine tastings and peach eating stop into the Blue Pig.
