We found SVSK a couple of years ago after trying a few different programs in the area and not really connecting with their instructors and/or modes of instruction. Our daughter(who is almost 8 years old now) had studied Kung Fu in Arizona prior to our move to Silicon Valley. I stumbled across SVSK accidentally and since they offered a free trial class, we figured we’d give it a go. My daughter, despite having to give up her yellow belt in Kung Fu and start fresh, was immediately challenged and excited about these classes. It’s an incredible workout but more importantly, she’s learned about mental discipline, confidence and strength of character from the traditional model of Shotokan Karate. Sensei Jon is very kind, approachable yet commands the attention of the kids(and adults) in his class — I’m often awed at his ability to accommodate varying ages and belt-levels of students in one class. The price is fair and you aren’t locked into a contract. All in all, this is an excellent program for young and old alike! My youngest daughter is even excited to start her practice once she’s of age.

This is the same dojo that used to be called JKA Silicon Valley, now expanded to include kids and teen classes. After 4 years here I can safely attest this is as good as it gets for folks that want serious karate instruction in a collegial, accessible environment. Jon and Fred push us to always improve and they offer helpful, actionable suggestions, not the constant barking in half-understood English that is so common elsewhere. Could not be happier!

It was important to us to find traditional Shotokan Karate for our child because his father studied it and they wanted to practice together. We were delighted to find Jon because not only does he teach in the traditional style but he has a patient way with kids and is an excellent role model. Jon emphasizes strength of character, discipline, and respect for others. My child has responded to him very well as an instructor because Jon models these values in his own behavior. Kids can tell if someone is being fake or not really trying, but Jon is the«real deal» so they really listen to him. My child has learned a tremendous amount of focus, confidence, and self-control from studying karate under Jon.
