What can I say? I likes me some fast food Tex-Mex. I don’t care if it’s Taco Bell, Taco Johns, or Amigos. My favorites to get here are the nachos(minus guacamole — I avoid guacamole in fast food restaurants) and the crisp pinto burritos. Tasty stuff. It wouldn’t be fair to grade this place with the same criteria I’d use on authentic Mexican or on a sit-down slow food restaurant. It’s fast food. It’s a chain. It’s Tex-Mex not authentic Mexican. So, one must temper their expectations accordingly. Keeping all that in mind, it’s pretty decent food overall. This place is also a Kings Classic and a Winchell’s, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen anyone in here eating anything other than Amigos. I’ve never seen French fries or a donut on anyone’s tray.

Let me preface this by telling you to obviously not expect authentic Mexican cuisine here. This is obviously a fast-food TexMex, Taco-Bell-ish sort of place. That being said, it’s amazing. The only thing you need to know about the menu is: Crisp meat burritos. It’s heaven.(They’re kind of on the small side, so get two or three.) Aside from that, the service is actually excellent and they have a topping bar, and donuts, and lots of food choices.

Even though we were told to avoid this place by the nice lady at Advance Auto across the parking lot, we decided to give Amigos a try anyway. The food was very good with excellent service to boot. When I say very good I mean a step above Taco Bell but still your typical TexMex. If TexMex is not your thing perhaps the fried shrimp basket or burger offerings will suit your fancy. For dessert they offer a variety of Winchell doughnuts that apparently is a Midwest staple… I didn’t try but maybe next time.

Order your cholesterol however you like it: between buns, in a tortilla, or in a pastry. Parking in the diminutive lot was a challenge, but inside I found friendly service and surprisingly tasty food. I had soft tacos(more like small burritos) and the nachos. While not perfect, this will become my go-to place for late night nachos. The nachos had a good balance of cheese, meat, beans, tomato, sour cream, and guac. The serving size was appropriate for a snack or a side, but at $ 4.99 it’s a decent deal. They’re open to 11 or 12 most nights.
