The Parowan Gap petroglyphs are just northwest of Parowan, Utah, along North Gap Road that leads through a gap between the 600-foot cliffs of the red hills. As you approach this gap, a small parking area is adjacent to the road and the petroglyphs are appropriately fenced off to be seen from a distance. That’s good and you’ll still have an opportunity to view a number of very detailed petroglyph panels. The gap itself is of importance because it served as an actual calendar based on the sun’s path that caused shadows through the gap. Additionally, one of the petroglyphs is of a large V-shape that may have been used to calculate time. I’m no scholar so that’s as much as I’ll say to piqué your interest. Petroglyph sites are often inaccessible to the physically-challenged. Because these petroglyphs right at the side of a well-traveled road, no one will have a problem viewing these delightful images dating from about AD750‑1250.
