Barn Island isn’t really an island but more of a marshy area with lots of water. The total size is over 1,000 acres and about one quarter on that is dedicated to bird watches. Many large birds like ospreys, hurons, egrets, and ibex can be easily seen. Most of the area is filled with hiking trails and they can get quite wet in the spring time making hiking somewhat messy. Ticks and large nasty flies seem to adore the area, so a good insect repellent is an absolutely necessity. One of the most popular areas is the boat ramp. Even though it has a huge parking area it frequently gets filled during the summer months since this is a very popular place for boaters to launch from. Kayaks as well as much larger boats use this site for entry into Little Narragansett Bay and Fisher’s Island Sound. Apparently one of the safer place to park while launching a boat, because even though I have parked here many times I have never had my truck broken into while I was kayaking.
