Pawtucket Dog Park

I have a 55lb shep/​lab mix who is an only dog so she loves to go to the park for some interaction.
There is a nice area to run around and little dogs and big dogs have separate areas. I recommend sticking to the area best suited for size. Some small dog owners start out on the big dog side and end up getting mad because the big dogs are playing rough with the little ones. For the safety and happiness of your dog you should adhere to the policies.
The area is mostly grass, but there are some sandy, dirt patches that my dog always manages to wrestle in, so a bath is inevitable when we get home. For the most part the owners are decent and clean up after their dogs, but there are a a lot of older people who frequent the park who are rude. There are also issues with their dogs who are not dog friendly and really shouldn’t be at a dog park, so there can be a little tension on occasion (which is the only reason for a star deduction).
Overall it is a nice place and convenient from our house. I recommend taking your dog (s) if they are dog friendly and if you are willing to keep after them.

There is a big dog (31 lbs. +) and a small dog side (30 lbs. and under).
This was a rough winter but I give the frequent flyers tons of credit for trenching the big dog side to help it drain all the snow melt!
As with any dog park you run into a variety of dog owners — some nice folks who watch their pets and some that don’t.
My dog loves it and the one time there was a pup scuffle I quickly grabbed him from the fray and took him for a walk around the pond to get him out of the tense situation.
Check it out — your dog will thank you!

Overall, it’s a great park. Good size and fairly clean. As far as dogs and dog owners it’s hit or miss. I’ve met some great people with wonderfully social and friendly dogs and then I’ve met some ignorant, rude and dirty owners who don’t watch their dogs.
I wish there was a way to reinforce the rules. For instance, dogs under 30lbs need to be on the small dog side! No dogs allowed that aren’t spayed or neutered! Pick up your dogs waste! And get it in the barrel not on the ground!
If you get there at the right time on the right day it’s perfect.
PS. Watch out for the crazy lady with the female beagles. They dig holes that she doesn’t fill! She brings them on the large side! She doesn’t pick up after them! They are not spayed! And she takes them when they are in heat and yells at other owners!!!

This is the best dog park I’ve found in the Providence area. I like it because it is separated into large and small dog sections, which is great if you have a small dog who thinks he’s a tough guy like I do. The park is not always well maintained — I think there is a committee that is supposed to tend to it rather than the Slater Park crews, so things like cutting the grass or replacing lost/​stolen items fall through the cracks. Overall it’s a good spot, and a great place to see some characters (dog and human). Also, there is a hilarious feud between the large and small dog owners that is a real treat to watch unfold.

We heart* this dog park! I don’t have a lot of experience with dog parks, but I find this one enjoyable. I like that they separate the big dogs and small dogs because my little shih tzu thinks he is a big dog but definitely is not. The times I’ve been here, all of the owners (at least on the small dog side) have been attentive to their pets. There’s a nice variety of dog/​people personalities. Some of the dogs just chill on/​around their owners’ laps, while others run around crazy. My dog is more of a chiller, and he likes watching the other dogs and loves to explore, sniff butts, pee, etc. All the times we’ve been, there’s been a nice handful of dogs, but not an overwhelming number.
One thing that WOULD be a huge plus, if it were enforced, is their rule of not bringing kids under 9 into the park. Some dogs aren’t great with kids, but on the big dog side I have seen young children in there several times. One guy sits with his son on his lap, which is fine, but there were other young kids just tottling around and getting in dogs’ faces which would not have been cool with my dog. There is a rule that kids aren’t allowed for a reason, and I don’t like that some parents think it’s okay to violate this rule just because their own dog is kid-​friendly. Lots and lots of dogs are not used to kids and it’s not okay to make everyone nervous and anxious because you want to break the rules.
Minus a star because I think they need to replant some grass and update the fence a little. It’s okay on the small dog side, but yesterday a dog got stuck in the fence behind the shed in the big dog side and it sounded really hurt and scared.
Definitely a fun place to bring your pooch!

This dog park is quite enjoyable when the right kinds of owners are present. That being said, I will go on to explain why I only gave it one star. I have a timid dog who loves to run and play with friendly pups and their people. But when two male dogs gang up on my little girl, whose crying and can’t get up, and the owners ignorantly tell me «oh that’s how they play, leave them,» it makes me think twice about bringing my sweet dog around these folks. One woman said through her two front missing teeth, «if you don’t know how dog parks work then maybe you shouldn’t bring your dog here,» when I said my dog needed a break from hers. Basically, the park in itself is good, but unfortunately quite densely populated with some scummy, uneducated people. But in reality, what can you really expect from ‘the bucket?’

First of all — the park is a bit tricky to find (head for the duck pond!)
As far as dog parks go — this one is the nicest that we’ve found in the area. Clean, seperate big dogs and little dogs, water and bowls for the pups to share, benches for the two legged animals. :)
I will heed this warning however:
Be careful about when and how often you bring your dog around the park. My little guy has been picking up some bad habits that he’s learnt from some naughtier dogs there. We are going to be avoiding the park for a bit until our little guy can get back on track…
Some of the frequent flyers here are excessive barkers, some are aggressive, some have a nasty habit of digging, etc. So basically, don’t bring your pup here everyday unless you want to invest in puppy training to unlearn bad behaviour!
We’re looking forward to more fun times though. So maybe we’ll be seeing ya at Slater. :)

There are always the same 6 or 7 dogs here on the big dog side. 2 of them (Molly and Abby) constantly attack any new dogs especially timid ones like mine. When they aren’t there our time is enjoyable. However, it is basically all sand/​dirt so be prepared to give your dog a bath afterwards!!!

THe first time i came here with my dog it took me forever to find it since there aren’t any signs for it. which is probably one of my only complaints.
Now that we found it, we love it here. There’s tons and tons of space for the dogs to run. They seperate big and little dogs which thank god they do. I have a small dog and the idea of a german shepard trying to play with him would give me a heart attack lol.
The ground is packed in sand which yes, can lead to some muddy pups after it rains but they absolutly love it. There’s two water spickits on both sides and it’s the first time i’ve seen that… i have to admit it’s a fantastic added touch in the summer.
There’s plenty of seating here on both sides although the owners usually end up pow wowing in the middle anyway lol.
The majority of the owners are extremely responsible and watch their pups and interact with others.
We go there all different times of the day, somehow if we go at the same time twice the same dogs are there. which is exciting for them because they make friends lol.
Everyone is extremely friendly but they do have a few rules. No balls or toys which can be unfortunate for some but it makes sure any reason for a fight to break out is kept at bay. Also, they arent fans of bringing treats in… they’re dogs. if you do prepare to get surrounded by pups who want their share
For those of you who don’t know, it’s located behind the carousel.
My only other beef with this place was this winter between the snow and the cold it flooded. which was a major pain in the bum since i had to drive all the way to the warwick park instead of just going to the closeby pawtucket park.
All in all though… great place.

Yes the park is dusty but with brand new fences, places to sit, shade in the afternoon, two separate sections for big and small dogs, and running water spigots Pawtucket is a great park with most of the amenities you and your dog want.

I’ve only been here twice with my landlord and his 2 bulldogs.
They were giants in the little dog side until they got too heavy. Now they get beat up, chased around and taken down on the big dog side, and they enjoy every second of it!
I also run behind on the bike path and always hear ‘barks of glee’ as I pass.
FYI, it just reopened from a being closed for renovation last month. The bulldogs were not happy during that time.

I have been bringing my dogs here for years. I have recently come to the realization that this park is absolutely toxic. As of late, the dogs have begun bullying my dog (mounting him, jumping on him, biting at him, ganging up on him etc.). I know dogs — and I know when my dog is being inappropriate and will fully accept responsibility for him. But he truly is an excellent player and have given these dogs all the signs of submission.
The main problem is, the owners aren’t correcting their dogs. About a month ago, there was a greyhound that snapped at one dog and then at mine 10 mins later. My dog was so startled he bit his own tongue and was bleeding for hours. The only thing the owner did was tell his dog «You’re supposed to play with the dogs, not snap at them dummy». Yes, he called his dog a dummy. Then kept on with the conversation he was having. I have seen that greyhound there every time I go. He should NOT be allowed in the park.
This leads me to the other issue… apparently the dog park is run by a committee and they tend to abide by their own rules. The owner of the greyhound that snaps at other dogs is friendly with these folks — so the dog is not asked to leave like the sign outside the gate says they will if they act aggresively. BUT, there was a (fixed) female who kept getting mounted by the other dogs — all of the other dog owners (these committee members and friends) were yelling at the owner of the female dog to do something about their dog (the one getting mounted!!!). Like… whaaaa? These people have bred a toxic environment and I will never bring my dog there again. Although it’s expensive — I’ll just stick to doggy daycare.

The dog park itself is pretty good. There are two large areas with plenty of seating. There is also a water source too, which is something I have not seen at a dog park since we lived in Virginia. Very nice to have.
With all that said, my dog and I have been here twice. Both times I was asked to not play ball (fetch) with my dog, whom could care less about other dogs and just plays ball. The first time was because they thought it would start a dog fight, despite my dog being by himself on the other side of the park. Today, someone asked me to not play ball with him because they didn’t want their dog taking the ball and chewing it because it swallows things.
My dog and I have been to various dog parks to play ball literally hundreds of times. Nowhere else has this ever happened.
It is highly unfortunate how some people just do not accept responsibility for their own (or dog’s) actions. What is even more highly unfortunate is that I am absolutely sure that most folks at this park are not like that either.
Who knows. I am sure I will end up here again at some point, but it will not be any time soon. If it is better I will be sure to update this post.

Recent implant to Pawtucket found this dog park wasn’t too far from my home.
I had a bit of trouble finding it/​directions initially, but once I got to Slater MEMORIAL park (Not Slater Mill) I followed the signs to the old Lawn Bowling area/​Carousel and found it.
There are two large sections for large and small dogs, with plenty of benches. There were ample poop bags available if you happen to forget or run out, and everyone I’ve met has been super friendly!
My only tip is to maybe move more benches in the shade for the high noon sunny days, lol.

Started bringing my dog here a couple of weeks ago, and overall, I love this park! Not a lot of grass, which isn’t bad, unless it’s super dry (dust storms as the dogs run amok!) or rainy (lots o’ mud). The part is divided into two (2) sections– one for larger dogs, and one for the little pups. Nice water source is available. For the most part, the dog owners are very nice and friendly; every once in awhile, there’s one dog/​owner that isn’t well controlled, and that ruins it a bit. But my dog and I will still be coming back for socializing and exercise!

Way to go Pawtucket. Being from Pawtucket, born and bred. sometimes it is not easy to come up with good things to say about this little Rhody town, but Slater Park has always been a little glimmer of good. And with the addition of the Pawtucket Dog Park, it has only gotten better. What a great idea to purpose some of the open space in this park for use by our four legged friends and their masters. because come on, how many lawn bowlers are there out there anyways (the previous users of the space).
Overall I love this dog park. There is a water supply which is available in the warmer months (shut off now for winter) which is a huge plus. There are doggy poop bags available along with a holder for people to bring shopping bags and others to be sued to clean up the doggy business. It is good sized, with a bunch of benches for seating. There are actually 2 areas, equally sized for small and large dogs. the grass is minimal which can make for a sloppy situation in the rain, but what are you going to do. In my visits all of the people have been very respectful with cleaning up after their dogs, and keeping their hounds under control.
All in all, great spot… would go here in a second rather than deal with the battle dome that is Gano St.
PS. the only reason it didn’t get 5 stars is because nothing compares to the dog park at Old Mountain Field in SK. def the gold standard.

We started visiting this Dog Park a few months ago and our pup couldn’t be more happy, he loves it and we love it because it burns off some of his chaotic energy! The majority of the dogs and owners are friendly, on occasion you’ll have some out of control and angry dogs and owners but it’s a rarity. For the most part everyone (dogs and owners) get along, share water bowls, clean up after themselves, etc… It does get muddy because most of the grass is gone but it’s a dog park so the dog’s don’t mind. If you own a big or small pup, highly recommend you visit this hidden gem!

A much-​needed dog park recently opened in Pawtucket’s Slater Park. If you know the park, it is near the carousel, where the lawn bowling used to be. It is pretty big and there are two sides, one for dogs under 30 lbs, and one for dogs over 30 lbs. There is fresh water available, and plenty of bags to clean up after the dogs. The big dog side is starting to get a little beat up, but the grass on the little dog side is in great shape.
Most of the folks I meet there are very nice. There seem to be a lot of regulars and I’ve started to run into the same folks.
It’s a nice, convenient spot to take your dog, and there is a lot to do in Slater Park in general, so you can grab an ice cream or some clam cakes or take your kids to the playground all in one shot.
