I walk down the dirt alley past three neighboring houses and I’m at this market, so I *could* be biased. I have donated pecans from the overburdened ancient pecan tree conveniently located above every inch of my roof to the Pearland Community Garden club that sponsors the market, who in turn donates donations/what they produce directly to the food pantries to help our hungry neighbors eat fresh, healthy produce. How can you beat that for true farmer spirit? The BEST locally roasted(like a few blocks away) coffee from Pearland Coffee Roasters is offered by the cup or bag, feta cheese like nnnnggghhh good, beef jerky above and beyond any you’ve tried, natural beauty products, unique gifts of food and soaps and useful items, dog treats, local produce and meat, prepared French, Asian, Middle Eastern and beyond foods, preserves, vegan cookies, natural salts in all colors of the rainbow and different vendors each time I come. It’s in a park so kid friendly and social dog friendly, park right on the street lot and keep your money local. Check the schedule on the above site as they have limited winter dates. Come during Oct/Nov and I may even invite you(implore most likely) to pick up some of the tons of pecans in my yard next door, under the spread of oaks that have probably been here since Queen Victoria’s era. Sometimes small and local trumps large and fancy, right?

Applause for Pearland starting a farmer’s market! This one has been around I think for about 2 years and has been in this location for roughly one. It’s a modest little market filled with good people and even a little music. Still in its humble beginnings, I’ll not compare it directly to the big dogs downtown but this one is worth a visit so long as you know what to expect. Due to the drought the produce isn’t abundant per se but you can still get very fresh and flavorful locally grown okra, peppers, squash, carrots, eggplants, lettuces, cucumbers, and onions this time of year. One of the farms brings in non-local produce to supplement their booth, which initially I frowned upon but when I saw the very reasonable prices and looked at all the cracked sidewalks around from the lack of rain, I completely understood. OFFERINGS: locally grown produce(Gardener’s Produce: backyard gardens!) with some grown elsewhere brought in to supplement(Froberg’s has both local and supplemental), free-range eggs and meat, goat milk concoctions(Proverbs Farms in Alvin), very local honey(Rose of Sharon), locally roasted coffee(Pearland Coffee Roasters), healthy muffins with gluten-free options(Bella’s Kitchen), Italian food(Mother Teresa), Turkish food(Taste of Asia– I bought quite a bit here!), Indian food(Nisha’s), jams, salsas, tamales(Grande Tamale — they even have a vegan one with tofu and miso!!), a french bakery(The Petit Croissant) and likely more I’m forgetting– DEETS: Bring cash though some vendors accept credit cards. Open the **2nd and the 4th Saturday** of the month from 8a-12p, located in between the Methodist Church and Old CJ Harris/now Pearland Community College, around a playground so bring the kiddos!
