A quick look and all you see is a parking in the industrial section of town. Once you turn into the parking lot though you see something entirely different. This secret spot is right on the Hudson River with a grassy slope leading to the water. The main feature here is a pier that used to greet ships coming from China. Dubbed China Pier at one point, the name is now Fleischmann Pier paying tribute to the Fleischmann plant that once stood just down the street. The pier played a major role in providing molasses to the Fleischmann plant. A pipe system once transported the molasses from the ships to the plant itself. A sculpture titled«Liquid Mechanics» graces the waterfront here and as the plaque in front of it explains, it is made up of materials taken from the Standard Brands Molasses Pipe System. The pier no longer plays functional role in meeting ships; a portion of it is closed off but wander down the pier on a sunny day you’ll be in the company fishermen and people setting up crab traps. This little spot provides a quiet refuge and serene atmosphere. It’s a great little escape off the beaten path, or in this case just pulling off the road for a few minutes.
