My nephew and I went last Saturday right at noon when public skating opened. Worked out perfect for us novice skaters. Skate rentals are there along with these blue things that look like walkers but help you learn to skate — or in my case refresh some old muscles! It was nice to know that a warm tent and hot refreshments were there but the skating kept us pretty toasty. We had fun and plan to go again next year. Recommended it for kids and families just trying out skating or doing an annual holiday skate, even a light-hearted date. FYI, if you are accompanying skaters and just want to sit it out, there are tables and chairs inside and outside for you to enjoy snacks.

My husband and I checked out the temporary Winterfest Ice Skating Rink at Cooper River Park today. This was just set up for the Holiday Season, open from November 28, 2014 though January 6, 2015. The rink is very small, but for a temporary feature at Cooper River, it’s not bad. We had a fun time. Entry fee is $ 4 for people 13 and older(free for younger kids) and skate rentals only $ 3. The entire set up includes a food tent with some snacks and hot chocolate, and a separate heated tent where you can sit and eat your snack, change into your skates, or just relax in the warmth. As with most public skating rinks, the blades on the ice skates were not sharp at all, making skating a little difficult, but fun nonetheless. We got there as soon as it opened at Noon today, and hung around for about an hour, when it started getting pretty filled with families with small children. For a total of $ 14 for both my husband and myself, it was a fun way to spend an hour on a Sunday afternoon. Side note: I’m sure hoping for another Unilocal event at the Blue Cross River Rink this January! We had a blast the past 2 years!
