Griffith Quarry Museum

Free. Fun. Educational. Nature. Lots of free parking. Interesting docent. What more could you ask for?! Check out this GEM of a place. On week-​ends the museum is open from noon-​4 pm. Small, but interesting! The docent was very informative. Griffith Griffith, a Welsh man, opened the quarry in the 1800’s. The granite produced was some of the finest at the time. You can find it at the State Capitol, Mare Island in SF, Stanford University, etc. A short hike leads you to the quarry, with remnants of granite and a green pond. Lots of meandering trails, scattered picnic benches, places to explore and geo caches. Watch out for poison oak. Great for all ages. Short hike, so the littles can do it too. Guess the local high school kids like to hang out here, but we only saw one family, and a lady walking a dog when we started the trail. Pretty much had the place to ourselves. What an interesting piece of history. Check it out!

Lovely space to take a walk. Nice relaxing scenery and a little piece of history. I recommend an early visit to beat the crowds. Not much for wildlife during the day, some birds and butterflies. If you take the path on the left you’ll come to a nice open area, great for picnics and groups.

I’m sure the park is probably closed after sunset, but I’ve come out here a few times to watch meteor showers and/​or just to have some mischievousness fun after dark!
There’s quite a few walking trails, some granite ruins/​walls, and a pretty big open grass area for picnics and what not! I think they do some sort of free tours on the weekends, but I’m not sure what really goes on for those. If you have offspring, this is probably a pretty cool spot to take the kids out and wear them down!
If you decide to come out after dark, don’t forget your flashlight, at night the walking trails seem to send you in circles, which is always fun if your with someone who scares easily!
