Mike’s Bikes of Petaluma

Just have to once again thank the team at Mike’s Bikes for keeping me on the road. Hobbled in with a slow leak after a run down to Novato. I think my arms got more of a workout than my legs as I had to stop multiple times since I St. to pump up my rear tire. I knew I was overdue for tires. Connor took care of me right away. Two new tires and a tube and I was on my way in 15 minutes with a lubed chain to boot. Can’t beat service like that!

I was psyched when I first walked in and saw the great selection of gear, but then the hard core «sales-​ing» started and it was all downhill from there. The guy was spouting off specs left and right, didn’t even ask what I was looking for, and kept circling back to the more expensive options. Before I left he made sure to provide me with a checklist of gear to consider. Thanks but no thanks dude, going elsewhere.

I bought two kevlar tires and two Specialized tubes for my daughter’s trek bike from Mikes. She was going to college, and I wanted to avoid her getting any flat tires.
Imagine my surprise when about 4 months later my daughter called to tell me her front tire was flat. It turns out that the valve stem had come lose from the body of the tube. We replaced the tube.
Then three weeks later exactly the same problem occurred on the rear tire.
I spoke to the manager at Mikes. I got a, «these are not the droids you are looking for speech». He asked if the bike was stored outdoors. Of course it is — along with more than 30,000 other bicycles on UC Davis campus. He said that the rain causes the rubber to degrade, and the tubes were not defective !
Well the tubes certainly are not good enough for UC Davis. The manager of Mike’s Bikes is either trying to mislead his customer, or is incompetent? I don’t know which is worse.

A true LBS! Wanted comfortable riding bike that I could do hills on long rides on rough county roads. Liked comfort of Trek Damone yet it did not feel like «the ride». Hooked by Diverge Expert on first ride BUT needed gearing that could get me up hills. Took two weeks to actually buy as James, General Manager, and staff, worked out an alternate cassette that works seamlessly. Found stem to complete making the bike exactly as my Sports Chiropractor had measured it out for me. I was a «I want it my way» guy with James being patient, friendly, and not forcing the sale. I’ve brought my old bike previously for repairs with my being really pleased by the quality and explanation of the work done. I cannot imagine being happier with my bike.

The guys at Mike’s Bikes are extremely helpful, knowledgeable, and polite. They’re very accommodating, as well. Best of all, there’s no «attitude.» That’s right — no attitude, whether you’re just stopping in to have a tire repaired, or to buy a high ticket item. All customers are treated with respect, and service is prompt and fair. All the folks who work at Mike’s, from the bike repair techs to the sales staff, are great. My husband and I share the same sentiments about Mike’s Bikes and highly recommend it.

Went in to buy a new helmet. The person who helped me really took the time to find the right one for me, no pressure just truly a good experience. Thanks I’ll be back again.

If you’re looking to buy a new bike take a look at Specialized and their customer service. With my recent purchase from them they have completely covered any issue that has come up including replacing rims that were faulty and ultimately replacing the frame due to a defective weld (at no charge). Nothing is perfect, however, you can count on Specialized to stand by their bikes.
Great thanks to James and Ryan for their assistance in working with Specialized and getting me back on the road so quickly! Mike’s Bikes in Petaluma and Specialized… what a great team!

My sincere thanks to Matt (hope I got that right) who was volunteering as repairman at Tomales during the MS Waves to Wine this weekend. He replaced my damaged front tire with a smile and without charge and kept me rolling! My sincere thanks. I was already a loyal fan of Mikes, now even moreso. They care about the biking community and are esteemed public servants to boot.

I had a not so good experience with Mikes Bikes in Petaluma. I took an old beach cruiser into the shop and asked them what it need to save the Bike to give to my 16year old daughter to goof around with. They said tires $ 60 each and a new chain $ 15. I said that was great and to please look it all over and let me know if it need anything else to just give me a call. The bike was very old and rusty but had a charm about it. A few days later I got a call that it was ready and that I owed $ 237. As I was walking into the store they had new beach cruisers for $ 240ish I was so upset. I felt like they should have said hey for that price I can sell you this bran new shinny cruiser for less than $ 10 more my daughter would have a new shinny bike rather than an old rusty bike. I talked to the clerk and he called over the manager who assured me the bike had had was closer to an $ 600 bike so fixing it was better than a new one. I explained that to a 16 year old girl who may ride it a handful of times just for fun new would have been new not rusty and old with a broken basket??? I left with an over priced rusty bike that rattles with a broken basket!
*After I told my daughter the story of her bike she promised to love the bike regardless and took a long bike ride that evening with a friend!

Instead of the men working in the back of the shop explaining my dad’s options of buying a new bicycle instead of repairing an older bike they went ahead and charged him $ 300 to repair a bike we can’t even sell for HALF if we tried. We should have bought a new bike off them instead if they would have just pointed out the cost was about the same.
We will not be coming back. Highly not recommended for bicycle repairs.

This is an update to my original review where I gave them 4 stars and praised them. I take it all back. Their service department can be unreliable. I will not use them again.

I’ve been here a couple of times — everyone is friendly and helpful and there is a great selection of bikes. This is my favorite Mike’s Bikes location so far.

I have been frequenting Mike’s for a few years now. Based on my latest experience, I wanted to give them kudos and write a review. I recently purchased a new bike (elsewhere) and needed a rush job to upgrade my bottom bracket. Ryan came in on his day off to get this done for me! Many other times, as a walk-​in, I’ve shown up hoping for a quick fix so that I could get out and ride and they have always stepped up and got my issue remedied quickly.
From the store manager, James to the mechanics, Nick, Ryan and Connor … you are in great hands. A really great group of guys! I highly recommend you stop by to check out their huge selection of bikes or to use their great mechanics.

Great local bike store in Petaluma. Went in this last Saturday to buy my wife her first bike since she was a kid. Since she wasn’t sure what she wanted we had a bit of help from our salesman. He outlined the various types suited for her needs and the differences (hybrid vs mountain).
From here she rode 3 different bikes and was able to make a selection. Our salesman was knowledgeable about the products without being at all pushy. He simply explained the options and then provided us with the best information so we could make an informed decision.
She truly found the perfect bike for her needs at the price we wanted to pay. We opted not to get the service contract just because we dont know if we will still live in the area in the next few years but it sounded like a great deal. Again no pressure to buy the plan just the facts so we could decide. By the time we had settled up at the register the bike was out of service and ready to go home. She couldn’t have been happier!

My brake cable broke unexpectedly, so I brought my bike into Mike’s on a Saturday morning with no advance notice at a time when they were quite busy. Not only did Conor fix my bike in less than 10 minutes, he adjusted my brakes and cleaned up the gears too! I was very happy with their fast, friendly service and good customer attention! Even though their merchandise is on the pricey side, I will definitely come back!

We were bike touring through Petaluma when I broke a chain. I coasted into this bike shop and they repaired my bike in minutes. The employees were extremely nice and competent. The store was large and clean. If I lived in this area it would be my bike shop of choice.

This is a superb bike shop located in/​near «old town» Petaluma. The staff is super friendly, knowledgeable, and happy to help. They are not cheap, but you get what you pay for. Some bike shops stock flashy bicycles that look good from a distance but on closer inspection you find the ubiquitous «Made in China» somewhere on them. In fact, one shop had nothing but China bikes. Not here: they carry beautiful bikes such as Specialized, Strömer, and more.
I brought in my old Rock Hopper for their $ 99 tune-​up and left with a happy bike, then bought a new seat and handlebars as well as a cool little rear-​view mirror for my helmet. Although there was a bit of miscommunication about what I wanted done, they still got the job done quickly and efficiently.
This is definitely NOT on of those chic, exclusive shops that carry only European racing jerseys and expensive road bikes where, as an everyday person, you feel like an outsider entering elite hallowed territory. They are down-​to-​earth and very accommodating.

The team at Mike’s bikes are best in class. They are extremely knowledgeable, courteous and service oriented. Their after sales service is top notch.
I have purchased two bikes from this store and they will be the source of my next purchase.

These guys rock! I’ve had several bikes in there for repairs, and sometimes for a question or two, and they are always approachable, knowledgeable and always ready to help.
As a family, we’ve purchased two bikes from them and had three others worked on there. They do good work, are affordable and always professional.

Friendly, attentive people working here. Sometimes they are a little short on staff and so you’ve got to exercise some patience… but it’s worth the wait. Unlike our previous bike shop experience elsewhere, these guys acknowledge us as soon as we walk in the door, every time, even if we’ve got to wait a few minutes for help.
James spent a good deal of time educating us and helping us make the right choice for our purchase, and it’s been two months now — we are very pleased with our bikes and grateful we found this shop. I don’t hesitate to recommend this location if you’re looking for a bike or service/​parts.
edit: i should also mention they have a visually impressive selection of bikes available in store — but if they don’t have the color/​style/​whatever you want, they have several other locations they can poach from.
