Have you ever taken a high-stakes test in a large auditorium? Before this past Thursday, the last time I had done this was for my AP tests in high school. Well, I’m applying for a county job, and this requires passing a hopelessly outdated test – seriously, questions about filing and speaking to telephone operators? – with seventy-four or so of your closest friends. I know what test-taking is all about. Besides all those tests I took as a teenager and even as a twenty-four-year-old in graduate school, I’ve spent literally hours watching law students take final exams. It’s a seasonal job I have. So although I was nervous both before and during the test, I knew from my proctoring experience that the key to success was to get through the first reading as soon as possible and then go back and check all my answers. That ended up working out pretty well. Although it bothered me that someone had finished before the halfway point, I was done with my initial run-through soon after that, and I finished my checking and double-checking with two minutes to spare. The building itself is very spartan, which might be appropriate for a veterans building but which is also a little bit annoying. Would it kill them to have benches in the lobby? Standing around with a bunch of other nervous people isn’t necessarily pleasant, especially when people just can’t shut up about the fact that 700 people are applying for this job and that they only take the top three scorers. If you’d like good test-taking karma, don’t wear high– or thick-heeled women’s shoes to a test like this. You make ridiculous amounts of noise when you’re walking up to turn your test in, and honestly, I don’t really understand how wearing uncomfortable footwear improves your test-taking abilities.

Attended the Redwood Empire Swing Dance Club Invitational West Coast Swing Jack and Jill Invitational Competition last Saturday. The venue was large and fairely well AC’d. Womens restroom, two stalls are across the hall from the gym where the dance was held. There is a large parking lot with the entrance to the dance/gym is in the rear of the facility. Had over 150 West Coast Swing Dancers and it was comfortable with tables and chairs. The raised stage held the two DJ’s.
