You had me at FRIEDPICKLES. We stopped here for a bite, the smell from the smokehouse was intoxicating and drew us in. I got the ribs, he got the pulled pork. My ribs were a bit dry, I wonder if they knew this and maybe this is why they were inclined to drown them in bbq sauce, not fantastic, but not terrible(Warning my standards for BBQ are extremely high as I am a native Kansas Citian and I don’t have to tell you what we are known for) My beau’s pulled pork was alright, but then again he is not from Kansas City so what does he know about BBQ?(Just kidding!) The fried pickles were ok too– large spears rather than my preferred slices, which made them a little less appealing and the flavor a bit overwhelming. Their ranch dressing wasn’t the best either, and I take my ranch and bbq sauce very seriously. The pricing was a bit higher than we expected too. Overall– it’s all OK in the corral, but we will be moovin’ on to greener pastures…

Excellent BBQ and fixings. Beans are a pleasant mix of several beans including Lima and Kidney. Cole slaw is awesome. Ribs are nicely done and fall off the bone. Nice friendly staff. Simple country setting. BYOB. Cell phones don’t work in this location, which is a blessing. Makes for good dinner conversation with friends and family. If you are in the need of delicious smoked meat, this IS the place to be!

This is a fantastic place to pick up barbecue after a good hike in Rothrock State Park. Their burgers are interesting and delicious, and the baked beans are authenticly scrumptious. They just opened a new site on 322 so I can only hope that they are as good as the original site.

I stopped in Doan’s Bones new location along Rt 26 at the entrance to Whipple Dam. The new building at this location replaced the original that was damaged by a run-away truck a few years back. This restaurant is quite charming. Clean and comfortable. I asked the young lady at the front counter about different menu items and decided to get their Pulled Pork Sandwich. It came on a large hoagie roll, home made Cole slaw, and home made potato chips. The Sandwich was a «hardy» size, the shredded pork was warm but not so hot that it «cooked» the hoagie bun It was not mushy and did not come apart as I was eating my lunch. I loved the BBQ sauce, it has a unique flavor so it was not something right out of the bottle like most places serve. The Cole slaw was not swimming in mayo, fresh cut and awesome. The sandwich was $ 6.95 which was cheap for what I got. My check included a bottomless Diet Pepsi and was less than $ 10. Overall great experience. This place is a ride for me, but I will drive over the mountain to go back for some of their other menu items. A ride into Whipple Dam State Park with an order to go during the summer months makes for a relaxing day!

I ordered ribs and was served raw meat! If you want disgusting meat slathered in BBQ stick to the McRib!

The pulled pork is tops in the area and the ribs have always been fall off the bone tender. The bbq sauce is great, not too sweet with a touch of smoke and spice… perfect balance. The wings have always been cooked perfectly and well sauced.

People RAVED about this place so we took the 20 minute drive down to the Whipple Dam and were treated to a messy outdoor dining area, chewy ribs, and the greasiest brisket I’ve ever eaten. The only reason this place get’s 2 stars is because Fat Jack’s Bar-B-Que is the worst.

We were so sad that the closer location to State College closed. There is still a location out near Whipple Dam. This is by far the best barbeque we have found around State College. The sandwiches are amazing, as are the ribs. This place is not healthy fare, but it is not so greasy that you can’t enjoy your food like some places. After several visits I’ve yet to have a bad meal here. While its not nearly as convenient as when they delivered to us, we still drive out to Whipple Dam just to get Doan’s Bones. We generally eat very healthy, so its a great place to get a cheat meal. If you’re ever in the area I strongly suggest giving it a try.

We hired Doan’s Bones to cater our casual wedding this summer and could not have been more please with what we got. Before we decided to hire them we did a blind tasting where each member of my family had one plate from Doan’s and one from Clem’s, but didn’t know which was which. We unanimously chose Doan’s — 6 out of 6 of us! At the wedding, all of our guests seemed to enjoy the food. Anita made special vegetarian dishes for those who did not want to eat pulled pork or bbq chicken. In short, the food was great, the service was professional and friendly and we could not have been happier! I would recommend them to anyone.

Found it kinda by accident. It’s a little counter of sorts inside the big Unimart on W College and Whitehall. The wings, at least when I had them, seemed a little dry. And I dont just mean low on sauce. But at $ 6 for 12 wings, can’t really complain. The ribs were delicious. Clearly slow cooked for hours. Falling off the bone. I haven’t tried the sandwiches on their menu but they look interesting. They seem to run out of the elk Burger very soon though. Twice, I have tried to get it in the afternoon and they’re out. My advice — avoid the wings. Stick to the ribs n sandwiches.

This place is a great place to get some pretty good BBQ. It’s simple and relatively fast. The BBQ inst anything as good as Clem’s but it’s very conveniently located in State College and the personnel is very friendly. There are still tinkering with specials and sides, but the Sandwiches are great, and theres a large variety to choose from.

I just stumbled across this restaurant with an ad from . I had never heard from them, but apparently they have been in State College for about a year. They do have another location in Petersburg, PA. edit: That’s at Whipple Dam. I ordered online(was their first lionmenus customer) and they called right away to verify my order. I don’t think that they were very familiar with the area. The driver came quickly, and was very friendly. A nice change from the chinese restaurants delivery drivers I normally get. The food itself was good. I ordered 12 «Doan» wings, and ¼ slab of ribs with fries. The whole thing was $ 16 with taxes and delivery, which isn’t bad. I especially liked that they have smaller sized portions, like the ¼ slab. I’m not a big eater. The wings were big, and not too fat. The sauce was your regular BBQ sauce, nothing fancy there. Not spicy, not sweet. A little bland if you ask me. The fries were good(still warm) and had some seasoning on them. The ribs were definitely«fall off the bone», and the sauce was fine. I would rank them below prospectors & Clem’s, above most of the others(especially above the terrible ones at Wings Over). Overall, it was a good lunch. I had enough for a second meal, and wouldn’t mind at all ordering from them again especially that most places that do ribs around here are pretty expensive for delivery when it’s for a single person. But it’s not something I’d think I’d crave… Tip: Free Delivery($ 12 minimum) is great.
