Acme Markets

A come down from Super Fresh
I am a fan of city supermarkets. Efficient use of space– not the grotesque excess of suburban temples of consumerism.
However, having been used to Super Fresh, it is hard not to be disappointed with Acme. They often run out of their stock. The aisles have been made narrower as if this would improve efficiency– it does not. The staff is not as friendly as in the previous store. Most of the time, they don’t have an express aisle (sometimes seemingly at random they stick up a sign designating one aisle as such), which is a real pain for people like me in the neighborhood who frequently pop in for a couple of items that I plan to cook that night.

This place was a dump when it was Super Fresh and after throwing some makeup on the pig and it’s employees; well it is still a dump with better pricing. Seriously, who is the general manager or whoever claims to be in charge of this depressing store. I frequent this store two to three times a week since it’s right up the street from home and I have yet to have a good experience. The employees attitudes suck from behind the deli when you first walk in, to the seafood island, to the people walking the isles, the bakery, and ending at the miserable cashiers. I walked in one time and the kid that wears the cheesy gold watch was high as a kite and had no signs of coming off of his high any time soon. It’s a shame because the neighborhod was very hopeful that Acme was taking over but the first mistake was keeping the miserable Super Fresh employees.
**It all starts from the top…

They seem to have replaced most of the Superfresh cashiers with high school kids who don’t know how to bag and don’t know their vegetables. I bought a bag of loose pearl onions or shallots (10), and the young fellow rang it up as 5 garlic bulbs. They charge $ 6.39 for Amy’s Light and Lean Spaghetti with Meatless Meatballs, but the Everything Fresh Market at 12^th and Walnut regularly charges only $ 4.79 for the same product.
Superfresh no longer sells tzatziki, a favorite of WW dieters. No more Weight Watchers frozen treats. The bowls of «cooked» shrimp are frequently under cooked.

The last of the non– foofoo stores in CC and I love it. Just saved $ 50 bucks on top shelf sardines that were 2 and a half times higher and the next closest spot.
I can only pray this last vestige of old school grocers does not shut down for the sake of all the non-​food snobs.

Yeah yeah, i mean its not the wegmans in cherry hill, but its also not packed all the time, has a pretty solid selection and is like ¹⁄₅ actual grocery stores in the city. For those living in old city, society hill, i’d give it two big thumbs up for convenience. Acme was also recentlly acquired by Safeway, so the store brand products are way better now.

I’m not a big fan of acme to begin with but it is closer than whole foods so I gave it a try. I will never buy seafood here again. I bought the already cooked jumbo «farmed» shrimp for dinner and was sick all night…

Recently changed over from Superfresh. I was glad to see that they kept a lot of the old staff. This always a quick spot if I need to pick up something quick for home or to grab a quick lunch. I am quite fond of their store made rotisserie chicken salad as well as the nut and raisin salad. Prices are a little higher because of the location but the employees are friendly and the store is clean. What more could you ask for.

Hard to believe this Acme is worse than the SuperFresh it replaces. No renovation with the takeover, just brighter lighting and new branding. I normally wait a little while to review, but I’ve been to this Acme a few times since it opened, and they are fully stocked — so there’s no excuse for eliminating virtually ALL of the vegan/​vegetarian products SuperFresh used to carry.
Seriously do the executives at Acme hate vegans?
No more Boca Burgers, Tofurkey, etc. Just tofu, and that lame «Go Veggie!» fake cheese that’s not even vegan. The produce section sucks and as for frozen veggies? Terrible selection. I can’t even find a bag of stir-​fry veggies anymore.
Prices are higher than SuperFresh, and the employees all seem to not care or have basic common sense. Twice now I’ve paid for things that came to a total such as $ 11.73 so I’d hand over $ 21.73 to get a $ 10 back and I was given a confused stare, and then handed my $ 1.73 back.
Awful experience. Hope they get their act together. Only shopping here if there’s a blizzard from now on.
