Walked in to Josephine’s after seeing a sign for«fresh cannoli». Most of the bakery’s and grocery stores have the kind that are filled in the morning and mushy by the time you eat it later. I was looking forward to a decent cannoli for the first time in a while. First, when I walked in I noticed everything was super fresh. All sandwiches are made to order(no pre sliced meat sitting in a container). The grocery items they carry all sounded amazing. On the way out I picked up a frozen lasagna which was the best frozen anything I’ve ever had. It was surprisingly light with the ricotta being whipped and the sauce complimentary without making weighing it down. Usually after having lasagna I feel like I can’t move but this was so light I was pleasantly surprised. Everyone that had some felt the same way. Back to the cannoli. I ordered four and the little old lady(Josephine?) said it would be no problem. She took out the shells, and placed the cream in a piping bag and starting filling them. It took a lot longer then I expected but the wait was totally worth it. This was the best cannoli I have had. Hands down. Upside? Everything being freshly made with love by grandma(although not yours, its still close enough). Downside? Everything being freshly made with love by grandma. The wait is something you need to be prepared for.

This place is by far the BEST on Main St. The food is so good and the people who work there are super friendly. Everything that I and my co workers have had from there has been great! No complaints, NOT A SINGLEDAMNCOMPLAINT!!! I have to say that if you are looking for a place with great food and where your money goes a long way, then you have found it. By the way, try the HOTROASTPORKWITHSHARPPROV, I promise you won’t be dissapointed!

It is REALLY hard to put my finger on how many stars to give Angelo and Josephine’s. When we got there two girls ordered paninis in front of us and a guy who ordered two sandwiches was already waiting. I ordered the sliced turkey, ham, and imported swiss on the italian roll and the boyfriend ordered the italian hogie(ham, cappicollo, salami, provolone, hot peppers, lettuce, tomato, onion and Italian seasoning) on, what else, the Italian roll. The boyfriend went to grab a table outside while I waited for the sandwiches, the woman sliced the meats, then she went to the back. Then… … No exaggeration, these sandwiches took about 20 minutes. The other people got their sandwiches, and still I waited. I was sure they had forgotten about us when they kept coming back to the front with plates of fresh cannoli and no signs of sandwiches. Finally, 15 minutes or so in, the lady comes to the front to say they’re almost done. When, minutes later, still nothing we contemplated leaving. Turns out the sandwiches were worth it, and I’m glad we stuck it out. Mine was delicious with really quality cold cuts and thick, tasty cheese, and his Italian was easily the best Italian I’ve ever had, loaded with this wonderful oil and vinegar dressing that really took it to the next level. At $ 6.75 for about a 12-inch sandwich these are easily lunch for two days, and $ 0.75 for a can of Coke is reasonable too. So five stars for the sandwiches and one star for the insane wait equals three. Don’t expect freaky fast, but if you appreciate a good Italian and have 45 minutes to spare in Manayunk this is your spot.

This rating is probably premature, because I’ve only had the roast beef and Italian sandwiches so far, but I loved the roast beef so much that my boyfriend and I returned the next day for the same. The Italian was good, too, but the roast beef on Kaiser was was perfectly fresh, rare and well-seasoned with a confident amount of sweet horseradish blend. The cupcakes are delicious and taste very homemade. I am anxious to try their roast pork, fresh ricotta and moz, and cannoli.

Sometimes the most obvious reviews are the hardest to write. Like the usual suspects, the standbys, the ones you can always count on for a good meal. Angelo and Josephine’s has«THEBEST» sandwiches I’ve ever had in my life. I primarily get the paninis but have been know, from time to time, to venture out into the world of roast pork. Their ingredients are fresh, everything is assembled when you order it and not a minute before. You must be patient as assembling sandwiches of this caliber takes time and precision. Generally, if I’m in a bit of a hurry, I’ll call ahead and put my order in. The shop itself is small, one café table to sit at and glance at some magazines while you give your taste buds a pep talk for what’s about to come. I can’t speak to some of the prepared foods in the cases, but everything looks amazing.

Huge and tasty sandwiches. Very tasty. Love the fact you can also stock up on your Boar’s Head items for home while you’re here.

This place is such a great find; it’s right on Main Street in Manayunk yet often gets overlooked for the bars and restaurants surrounding this establishment. Everything here is made to order which means that you will wait a few minutes for your order but you can tell that the ladies that work here enjoy what they’re doing. Everything I’ve gotten here has always been delicious and cheap! — A rare find in Manayunk, especially on Main St.

This is place is the Italian food you wish your grandmother made. Delicious sandwiches and antipasto. The desserts are absolutely to die for. They will cater and deliver if you ask. Plus, it is so inexpensive that I almost feel guilty! Definitely give it a try.

This place is a hidden gem! I wandered in one day soon after I moved onto Main Street and the aroma of cured meats and sharp cheeses hits you immediately. The cozy temperature and clean, white simple counters and shelving gives you a good feeling about the quality and care that is put into the food. You will be greeted by one of several generations or a very pleasant and personable young woman who isn’t family but is almost always there working the counter. I’ve been there at least 4 times and my favorite visit was when one of the two elder women(grandma?) shuffled out from the back and started chatting me up as her daughter(?) made my sammy. We proceeded to have a lovely conversation about the weather and other pleasantries — what a little character! The subs are HUGE(I think that one sub is seriously at least 10 inches.) and the rolls are fresh with the perfect balance of chewy and crunch. Meat eaters, you’ll be in heaven by the extraordinarily generous slices of ham, hot cappicola, salami, prosciutto… you name it, they have it. The sharp provolone, fresh spices and good olive oil are the kickers. For tuna lovers, they offer a delicious tuna salad but what’s better is their Italian-style tuna, packed in olive oil and served fresh with lettuce tomato and onion. My boyfriend and I recently shared the Roast Pork sandwhich with the works, sharp provolone and broccoli raab. We sunk out teeth into our first bites and literally looked at each other with wide eyes. Hands down one of the best(if not THE best) sandwich I’ve ever had. A&J is definitely more of a takeaway joint. It has a selection of pasta and fresh mozzarella salads in the case, and, of course, the delectable meats and cheeses. The refridgerated cases have a small selection of sorbet, hummus and some Italian iced teas and the shelves have a selection of oils, vinegars and some other Italian crackers and sweets, which, if too overpriced to purchase, are at least fun to look at why you are waiting for your sandwich. There are a few small tables and in the nice weather they’ll put some out to the sidewalk. If you are craving a quality, MEMORABLE sandwich and care about supporting a family-run business that takes pride in their product, please pay the nice people at A&J’s a visit today. They also have a catering menu and I look forward to ordering when I’m entertaining next. I LOVEANGELO&JOSEPHINE’S!

Listen, if you work in Manayunk, live in Manayunk, or plan on passing through it– you MUST get a sandwich at Angelo and Josephine’s. I have done my fair share of eating in the Yunk, and I think I will go so far as saying their sandwiches are the best food in town. Much of the long sandwich list are combinations of Italian deli meats and accompaniments. If none of the pre-set combos strike your fancy, you can easily create your own or make substitutes. The ingredients are all high high quality. You will find no slimy deli meat here. The sandwiches are piled with the cured meat slices; they are quite big. Plus– how can you not be completely in love with a sandwich joint that puts an extra layer of meat on TOP of the sandwich. Completely unnecessary, completely awesome. My sandwich was hot sorpressata, hot cappicolla, provolone, and tomato. Sandwiches run around 6 or $ 7. If I see homemade roast pork on a menu there is a 100% guarantee that I will order it. I was told that Grandma makes it fresh here every morning from an old family recipe. The juicy slices were exactly what I was hoping for. This pork makes you stop and take notice. It was somehow light but also full of flavor. I wouldn’t be surprised if Grandma had a conversation with the pig and asked him what seasonings would be ideal to bring out his maximum delicious potential. Garlic was definitely mentioned in that conversation. The pork is so good that it barely needs anything with it, but sharp provolone is the appropriate dairy addition. I liked both sandwiches so much, and would advise coming with a friend so you can go halvsies with one stacked deli sandwich and one roast pork sandwich. Angelo and Josephine’s sandwiches are the kind of secret I want to shout about from the rooftops.

As kids, we used to get these hollow chocolate eggs in our Easter baskets. Although the chocolate wasn’t great, I loved getting them because they were massive and they had a toy in side. I can never find them anymore. So, I was elated to see a few out on the shelf here. The chocolate was stale and the toy was lame but the nostalgia factor alone was enough for me. Angelo & Josephine’s gourmet does a good job of aggregating some great products. They sell pastas and sauces from Severino, cheeses and spreads from DiBruno Bros., and both Asher’s and Gianduja chocolates. This alone should be reason enough to come here but there’s more to the store than prepackaged goods. The cannoli and the sandwiches are excellent. I’ll defer to Dan F.‘s description of the A&J experience, though. Really, there’s no way to top that.

Roast Pork with Provolone. Absolutely delicious! I was advised by the nice young lady at the counter that it would be wise to call in my order ahead time which is definitely a good idea if you are short on time. I was not short on time and liked looking around at the little deli’s olive oil, balsamic vinegar’s, different meats, and the 2 massive cupcakes sitting by the register. They have 2 small tables inside so it’s possible to eat there as well like I did. Very good size hoagie, probably about 12 inches, and I believe it came to $ 6.50 + tax. The girl had also mentioned that the pork is homemade which made it all the better. I will be back to try another hoagie and next time I will end it with one of their canollis. Great spot that I strongly recommend. Call ahead if you can’t wait about 20 minutes for your order…

«A Roiling Culinary Orgasm» To begin this review right will require a bit of intimacy. I want you to feel notified and warned. Now, without further ado … We’re going to start by taking off all our clothes. Image sequence: Dancing candles, illuminated French windows, rustling window silks, and the fruited whisper of pink champagne. I want you to think back to a time when someone made you feel beautiful. Someone who kissed away the tears. A lover who traced a smiley face on your cheek, and then, almost without notification of any kind, abruptly changed the channel and rode your ass over the highway to heaven until you had not one more breath to give. That, my friends, is how it will feel to eat anything from Angelo and Josephine’s. The eggplant. The spicy soppresata. The masculine punch of aged provolone. The gentle Italian seasoning. Tender, fresh roasted red peppers. All spilling lavishly outside a long, thick, scrumptious roll, generously portioned out to the point where it’s you, sandwich #1 and sandwich #2: it’s a bangin’ threesome. Wash it down with a bottle of refreshingly tart Yakima Grape Fizzy Lizzy(½ seltzer, ½ grape & lemon juice, not a messed up apple juice blend.) And then. When you’re sort of done and just want to finish yourself off. It’s not going to play that way because you are in the capable hands of a master. That’s why you’re going to about-face from the door, press your hips right back against the counter and order your gluttonous self a freshly filled cannoli. Freshly filled: why should you care? I’ll tell you why: Freshly filled cannolis are crisp and light, not chewy, soggy or tough like their pre-stuffed and refrigerated brethren. What you now have in your hand is a wildly exciting cream-smashed flute that’s moving closer, and closer still, right up and then, yup, into your mouth and there’s no turning back because you have shot straight to heaven and back again. Your brow is beaded with sweat. Your knuckles remain white. And then: you’re still not done! Because off and minding its own freaking business is a sexy little chocolate cupcake that looks, smells, tastes nothing like today’s tarted up, overly sweet grotesquery promoted and popularized by Magnolia et al. This cupcake was conceived in the day when baked goods got real. You know what? I’m not even going to tell you about it. Head over to Manayunk NOW and taste it yourself.

This deli offers the best roast pork sandwich in Manayunk. I recommend the sandwich with their provolone cheese and on a roll(they use Amoroso rolls). Delicious! It runs about $ 6.50, and is worth every penny. They also have a good potato salad, with chunks of crunchy celery. The potato salad is very mildly seasoned, so you must add salt and pepper. Finally, they also offer other foods for reheating — like meatballs, or chicken parmesan. Definitely worth a visit!

These ladies know how to cook & bake! Perks: Best variety of premium meats, cheeses and Italian specialties for the LOWESTPRICES. I honestly don’t know how they keep the quality so fresh and the price so low. My favorite sandwich is the drunken goat cheese with artichoke hearts — at almost 12″, overstuffed and under $ 7 it’s an incredible bargain! They always have very affordable lunch specials daily with freshly made soups. The cannolis are fantastic & made to order. Catering Perks: Prices that knock the socks off of Marathon Grill, Day By Day, Du Jour with higher quality foods. A&J have catered an event I’ve helped organize for the past two years — providing gourmet mini sandwiches for 100 guests — boy do they deliver! Their party tray prices are also unbeatable — let them know what you’re willing to spend and they’ll come up with a beautiful and decadent platter. Pitfalls: Don’t expect to rush in and out. Each sandwich or meal is prepared to order — ie., the meats and cheeses aren’t sliced until you order your sandwich. Expect about 15 – 20 minutes per creation. Tips: Call your order ahead! Unlike other Manayunk restaurants who take your call & let your order sit, calling ahead makes a significant difference and speeds up your order. Always check to see what special home made desserts are available, they may not always be on display.

This place makes the biggest paninis I have ever seen. Seriously. And for about $ 6 you can stuff yourself till kingdom come twice over. They have the finest deli meats among other italian specialties & you are more than welcome to make your own sandwich although their menu covers almost anything you’re in the mood for that’s sandwich related. i’ve also heard through the grapevine that they make some killer cannolis. it’s always nice to support a small family owned business but even with that aside the quality & quantity of their food is just superb. i always try to order something different there & actually just finished a half of their italian hoagie… but i gotta say the prosciutto is definitely my favorite. now what are you waiting for? you should have a delicious roast beef panini in your mouth right now!
