This is an experience not to be missed! Go to Penn’s Landing and see these ships, even if you’re not interested in the rest of the Seaport Museum. Becuna — I hadn’t been on a submarine since I was a very young child, so it was interesting to see this from an adult perspective. First of all, I got a real sense of how small and tight everything was, especially considering the crew numbered in the 80s. They had to do «hot-bunking», or sleeping in shifts, so that everyone could sleep. Also, it was hard to imagine that smoking was allowed in this very small space. Olympia — GLORIOUS. This is like a luxury cruise ship, and it’s incredible to see how advanced the ship was for the time. For example, there’s an extensive dentist’s office and apothecary. The kitchens, head, and officer’s quarters are visible. You can also walk into the captain and admiral’s quarters. On the second Saturday of every month, the ship is in full dress and there are reenactments happening.

If you are in Philly and have some time, the Olympia and Becuna are worth the time to see. The Olympia is a rare specimen of a WW I era warship. The ship’s design bridges the gap between the Steamers of the 1800’s and the all metal warships of WWII. The Becuna is a typical submarine that you might have seen at other museumes.

I ‘ve seen her before. She’s a great old ship and well worth our donations. Active service 1895 – 1922
