Fabrics on Fourth

I was happy that this store was open on Sunday because none of the other ones were, but I was not impressed with their selection of fabrics or accessories. I was in need of all-​purpose white thread so I could quickly replace a hem. The worker pointed me to a very sorry looking rack with only about 10 spools total. I ended up grabbing the upholstery thread because I was in a pinch and it was one of the only white spools left. The fabric that I looked at inside seemed very dated and not high-​quality. I will say that I appreciated the open floor plan of this store because so many of the other shops are packed to the gills, but the music was blasting inside and it was hard to hear anything. I wish I could give a higher review because I know that a lot of the stores along Fabric Row are struggling, but I was hoping for a larger array of items and more professionalism from the staff.

Fabrics on Fourth is possibly the coolest vibe you’ll get in an old style fabric store on the Row. Unlike many of it’s neighbors, the store is spacious, with plenty of room to walk about while a flat-​screen TV plays reruns of old Soul Train shows.
Their stock also skews towards the clothing and costume trade, with lots of thin, shiny, gossamery fabrics, bright colors and such. They have some upholstery and drapery fabric, however it seems to be not their focus.
Fun place, and a breath of fresh spacious air after digging in some of the more jammed stores on the row!

On a Sunday when all of fabric row was closed and my hopes of getting fabric for a toga were quickly dashed, this shop was my savior. Not sure exactly what I wanted, I walked in. The designer in shop, Mr. James, is one of the coolest people I have ever met. He helped me pick my fabric, showing me the cheaper kind because I’m a college kid. For free, he braided a belt for me out of gold rope and he entertained me with stories from his life and his opinions on modern religion, among other things. With the soul music playing on the speakers, the atmosphere of this shop is just perfect. This shop may just become my go-​to for fabrics.
