Franklin Field

Franklin Field is beautiful and a gem in the City. What I don’t like is that over the years, they have closed it to non-​students. My husband works at Penn, and we live in the community. I used to love to go there to run, but now you cannot get in unless you go through the gym that is attached. To get into that gym you must have a membership. I find that annoying when Penn doesn’t support the community.

Franklin Field is full of history. I saw the 2012 Ivy League championship here, and I loved how well maintained this old stadium is. I’m not sure how much longer this stadium will be around, but you should definitely check it out.
Franklin Field was at one time the world’s largest stadium, and it also used to be the home of the Philadelphia Eagles. Vince Lombardi’s only career playoff loss occurred on this field, as well as an incident that helped make Eagle fans infamous. Yup! This is where Eagle’s fans booed and pelted Santa with snowballs.
Even though this stadium doesn’t have the modern amenities that Lincoln Financial Field or Citizen’s Bank Park has, it’s still a great place to see a little piece of Philadelphia frozen in time.

The University of Pennsylvania football team is yet again the #1 team in the Ivy League… the 2012 champs! See a football game! Go Quakers!
The field is historic, and not only holds the annual Penn Graduation (where General Petreaus surprised the crowd with a rousing speech in May 2012), but it was the first home to the Philadelphia Eagles and boasts one of the world’s top races: Penn Relays. If you’re in the area, it’s worth a quick visit just to see the beautiful old brick architecture.
The negative is that the football games do not draw a crowd, and in fact, many people don’t even realize that Penn has a football team. «Back in the day» — the stands would be filled with students and locals cheering on the Quakers. Now you’re lucky to have 1000 people in the stands on game day. However, tickets are the right price! Don’t forget to bring your toast.

Home of my Penn Quakers! Franklin Field is a beautiful, historical stadium with some nice views of the city sky line. It’s right on the edge of Penn campus so it’s pretty close to center city. Football games are cheap, and its home of the Penn Relays.

Franklin Field is a historical gem.
It is the first stadium to have a scoreboard in the Nation, and also the first to have the two tiered structure seating wise.
It is the oldest stadium still housing college football games in the Nation, home to the Ivy League Penn Quakers.
The Penn Relays, the world’s largest and first relay track meet, are held there each year as major attraction.
In addition, little known fact is that the Army/​Navy annual college football classic was held in Philadelphia 75 times in the past century, and Franklin Field was the first Philadelphia site to host the Army/​Navy game in 1899 (which was the fifth Army/​Navy game played).
The classic majesty of Franklin Field is a site to behold, and it is a national treasure.

Franklin Field is iconic; home of the Penn Relays Carnival for over 100 years. As a young Track & Field athlete my ultimate athletic goal was only to run at Franklin Field and I was able to do so on several occasions.
Just the thought of being able to run where all the greats of my sport ran, stretch in a bull penn that has been flooded with the sweat, blood and tears of those who paved the way… It was a honor!
At Franklin Field you can feel the power from the crowd like no other stadium as you approach the back turn and make your move down the straight away giving your all to pass your opponents. It’s a feeling that has lasted for years and will continue to flourish as the history of the sport is still being written.
From the streets of Jamaica to the perseverance of a College team or determinations of High School children; Franklin Field allows dreams to come true and new stories to be written. The jolt of power you feel when you step on the track must be the culmination of all of the greats letting you know that this is your opportunity only a feeling felt at Franklin Field.
But no need to worry if your not willing to run your heart out, jump your furthest or throw as hard as you can, the feeling flows well beyond the track through the stands and into the carnival area as everything about Franklin Field’s history and tradition new and old are felt.
