Excellent place for random assortment of good food. There are two menus, one for meat and one for vegetarian, with selections ranging from farm animals to seafood and a large selection of veggies. They have happy hours Monday to Friday 5 – 7 and Wednesday’s a buck a shuck after 5pm. I haven’t personally tried their oysters yet but I am sure it’s good. The burgers here are wonderful, you can pick between regular fries or sweet potatoe fries or just side salad. Their beer selection is amazing, come on by and try it out for yourself :)

Yikes… don’t want to trash this place as there were some bright spots but the lackadaisical service we had last night was embarrassingly bad, and I’m probably being generous with two stars. My wife’s food came out and looked great and I’m told it tasted pretty good too… then the waiting began. When she was halfway done, I thought maybe I should ask if the brisket was on its way out, but thought maybe they were just making it extra delicious. Finally a half hour later when we finally got the«how was everything» stop-by, I asked and apparently there was some sort of computer glitch and the order never went in. Seemed like a cop-out, but I’m pretty reasonable and the clock on our babysitter still had some time left; I thought give them a chance to apologize, maybe comp it or at least throw in a drink or two. Nope, the best we got was a weak«sorry» and nothing else, and it really wasn’t by any means a $ 20 caliber brisket dish, where we had to ask for ketchup twice after the initial screw-up and the water went dry too with no initiative taken to refill. Management/owner of this place could probably stand to do some training or at least make the rounds to a table that was clearly disappointed/ignored. A sincere apology goes a long way(more than comping stuff). The food scene in Mt. Airy is kind of saturated and I’d hate to see this place turn over again if this is more than just a one-off. But when customers see the puppy(?!, really ?! — and I love dogs) sitting with the table a couple tables over on the patio getting more attention from the waitstaff than the other tables, it kind of leaves a bad impression. I’ve had far better experiences at a freaking Applebees in flyover country when on work trips. Very comparable food at Goat Hollow and far better service the few times I’ve gone there, worth the trip a few blocks away. I’m too much of a wuss to make a big stink and complain or make a scene(I mean, if my worst problem in life is having to wait a while for someone to bring me food while I drink some wine, I’m probably doing okay), but best to just leave the minimum 15% and not begrudge the staff working on a Saturday night, but likely not come back ever again and leave it at that.

Really like this spot. We had a few oysters and the Farmhouse burger. Let me tell you that was one of the best tasting burgers I’ve had in a long time. Nice, juicy and cooked just the way I want it. I tried their all day IPA… good stuff.

The food is great… small plate was enough food for a good snack. Had the crab and potato Abu gratin and sweet potato fries with caramel… awesome! My friends raved about the lamb burger and fish sandwich. Must go again!

The Grain Exchange is a rip in the fabric of space-time. The bartender at this establishment is what you would get if a sloth mated with an ent. He checked on us once, then ignored us for the next hour and a half while we waited for food that never came. We sat at the bar because the host didn’t have the creativity to seat our party of 3 at the 2 free 2-tops in the dining area. I am on Unilocal writing this as my wife looks up other establishments in the area. We are nearing 2 hours in, we have had one drink and no check-in to see if we want anything else. Our food order has been in for at least an hour. Never again. We are walking out. Do yourself a favor and never come to this black hole of a restaurant.

Very excited to find outdoor seating! Delicious $ 5 brunch cocktails — especially the bourbon bloody mary. Went on a Saturday morning — wasn’t terribly busy. Great ambiance. Creative homestyle menu. Flavors were a little muted — I prefer more spices, sauces etc. Overall a good experience and solid vegetarian and vegan menu — always a huge plus.

This place was great! The vegetarian menu stands it’s ground against the regular menu. We started with buffalo seitan wings and the roasted Brussels sprouts(which we asked for without cheese and it came with anyway but it worked out fine). Both were really good and devoured. My parents had the kale and white bean soup, delicious. For my meal I had the veggie burger number #2 — it was okay… I think the potato bun kind of took away from the flavors of the burger and toppings. Other items ordered and enjoyed: Bison burger — large and perfectly cooked Buttermilk chicken sandwich — two pieces of juicy chicken drizzled with honey and topped with kale(I am coming back for this!) Fries fish — nice size piece of cod, bun took away from the flavor. Bun removed, tasted better. Vegetarian pulled pork(seitan) — was ok Sweet potato and regular fries — were really good! Apple dumplings — amazing! Greystone Chardonnay — really good and nicely prices per glass Waitress — was perfect! Hope to have her again.

This is a neat place in Mt. Airy. I went there with a friend for dinner and both of us being vegetarians and the moment we were pleasantly surprised at the side range of vegetarian options. In fact, they had a separate veggie menu and that was great. I wanted to try so many things but unfortunately both of us were not that hungry. So I got their red and golden beet salad with whipped herb goat cheese which was really good but I didn’t understand why they served it in a long dish and not a proper bowl. I found it difficult to eat coz I generally mix it all up in a salad. Hence just the four stars and I was not crazy about the dressing. My friend got the spinach and barley soup which she liked and it was a hearty portion. The waitress who served us was super friendly and nice and the atmosphere is great. Would definitely go there again to try their other veggie offerings.

After a long day at Chestnut Hill hospital ICU we were starving and really needed something special. Germantown Ave is a haven of eateries… But we opted for the Grain Exchange… We ate there when it was the Wine Thief… Great food back then made us try the new establishment… We got the Farmhouse Burger and Sweet Potato Fries!!! I took a pic because it looked heavenly! The bacon was cooked to perfection, the beef was fresh and flavorful and cooked just the way I asked. The sweet potato fries are flawlessly cooked… We didn’t order their beers… Can’t comment on that. But we left and talked about that Burger off and on all the way home… To South Jersey! Service was wonderful and after nothing but sadness all day at the hospital I was grateful for the upbeat server. We will be back… Saw some things I need to try!

I come here probably every other weekend for brunch. The service is always excellent. And the food is always excellent. They have a seasonal menu that changes and an entire side of the menu is dedicated to vegans and vegetarians. I haven’t had many of the drinks here except for a Bloody Mary which was great! 5 stars from me. Personal favorite here is the veggie burgers and the seitan wings.

This place is a gem. I was looking for a nice Valentine’s Day dinner spot in the Mt. Airy/Chestnut Hill area, and I’m so glad I stumbled upon Grain Exchange. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, intimate yet laid back – just my style for date night. Here are the highlights: 1. Excellent cocktails and a nice selection of craft beers 2. The fried pickles and pigs in a blanket appetizers are awesome! The pickles were lightly fried, not overdone like I’ve had at some places. The dipping Tabasco Mayo dipping sauce was a great complement. 3. Be prepared to eat – the portions are huge! We split the Fried Chicken Sandwich(layered with kale, lots of it! The chicken was lightly fried, juicy and sweet.) and the Farmhouse Burger(cooked just how we ordered. Definitely go for the fried egg on top if that’s something you like!) The food is excellent, but the service and atmosphere really earn the five stars. Our waitress was so pleasant and the service was quick. And this place gets extra points for playing country music all night! :) I think I might call them for that playlist. Needless to say, I’ll definitely be back here again.

I don’t know how I missed this joint in my search for decent grub on the Mt. Airy main drag. Fantastic menu. Lotsa vegetarian options. But plenty meat, fish, oysters, salads, incredible fries, good and prompt service. This joint has it all. Bring your appetite.

The food here is absolutely incredible. The small plates are always a sure fire way to have a great dinner. The smoked gouda mac and cheese is always on point with large pieces of bacon. The goat cheese dumplings? Magical. Lamb burger is moist and full for flavor. Everything is well balanced and the beer selection is great. I had the Tricerahops! Derek took care of us — he’s warm and friendly and provides some pretty great menu recommendations. We will be returning here many a time. Oh! Get the apple dumplings for dessert. It’s just so amazing and the vanilla ice cream just completes it.

Update! The owners reached out to me after I posted my initial review of this restaurant. I really appreciated that they actually read these reviews and they want to make sure to use this information for improving the business. The owner provided a sincere apology for the negative service experience that we encountered; shared the corrective actions that they have taken to address this issue; and provided a gift card for us to use if we decided to give them another chance. We returned to the Grain Exchange on Sunday night and we really enjoyed our experience! We were greeted and seated by our server as soon as we entered the restaurant. She was attentive while also keeping a nice relaxed pace through out the dinner service. As mentioned in the previous review, they have a great dinner menu, draft list, and creative yet classic cocktail selection. We also checked out the dessert menu for the first time and as a true Southerner, I will put my stamp of approval on the pecan pie, too! The great service really made the rest of the positive aspects of this restaurant stand out so much more this time. Grain Exchange, please keep up the good work! Your efforts are recognized and greatly appreciated. I am looking forward to visiting again, soon!

Our party of 4 received a very warm welcome on a busy cold Friday night. For 3 of us it was our first time there. We had 2 bleu burgers, the shellfish jambalaya and the buttermilk fried seitan with dry cider, gingerbread stout and rye rebellion. Great food and drinks. I particularly enjoyed my juicy medium bleu burger with thin crisp fries washed down with the sharp dry cider. Our server was excellent — informative, friendly, thorough and not intrusive. Only slight downside is that the noise level did get pretty deafening at times, but then it was Friday and everyone was enjoying themselves. I would certainly go again.

We’ve been here about 4 or 5 times now since moving to Mt. Airy about a year ago and I love it! The servers are friendly and knowledgable. The beer selection is fantastic and they always have something new and unique. The food is super tasty and creative. The atmosphere is cozy and rustic and makes you feel warm and at home. Their menu is quite impressive and extensive, with an entire vegetarian menu on the back if you’re into that. I’ve only had a couple things that I thought were so-so, which is why I can’t do 5 stars(yet!) My tip would be to slim down the menu just a touch and remove the few items that aren’t quite as up to the same quality as the rest. On the whole almost everything I’ve ordered is incredibly delicious, including the fried chicken sandwich, shrimp and grits, the farmhouse burger and the short rib melt. All incredible! I highly recommend the Grain Exchange and I hope they continue to improve on a few things and succeed.

Great addition to the neighborhood! Love the rustic yet modern décor and ambiance. It reminded me of something you’d see in the downtown area! I have been here twice now and can safely say that I really enjoy their food! On this most recent visit, I came on Wednesday for their Buck-a-Shuck oysters!!! Even with the below freezing temperatures outside, I couldn’t resist getting some oysters. Only the Blue Point oysters from NY were part of the deal but that is okay because those babies were huge! I happily slurped down 9 oysters hehe! I also ordered their Short Rib Melt, which was quite filling. So much so that I could take the second half the sandwich home for the next’s day lunch. I particularly liked the addition of the smoky and woody mushrooms in my sandwich too. My friend ordered the Shrimp and Grits, which she really enjoyed! I remember on my first visit, another friend ordered the Smoked Gouda Mac and Cheese, which was just as tasty as all of the other dishes. They have a great selection of craft cocktails and beer, which is always appreciated as well. If you are in the neighborhood, definitely stop by!

This place is an absolute gem. Their anchor(in my opinion) is the $ 12 Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich. It comes with choice of fries, sweet potato fries, or salad. The fries are amazing! Hand cut, and delicious. Since Bee Burger went out, Grain Exchange has the BESTFRIES in Mt. Airy, no question. The chicken portion is huge, comes on a potato roll with a zingy house sauce with wilted kale greens and honey. Often I have gotten TWO fried buttermilk chicken breasts on mine sand-hwhich, or else a ginormous one that sticks out from under the bun in every direction. For $ 12, it is an awesome deal, ESPECIALLY knowing this place is committed to using local, organic, farm grown, etc in its menu. The atmosphere is really cool. I love the«uniform» the employees wear. Really cool plaid shirts, with dark blue jeans and dark boots/sneakers. It makes for a cohesive vibe, and it sorta feels like you are in a distillery restaurant, or a hipster Wild West saloon. There IS outdoor seating, but I have yet to check that out. As for the bar– They have a large selection of microbrewed beers, stouts, ales, porters, lambics, etc. Definitely a place for beer lovers, and craft beer lovers. Not sure how many taps, I am gonna guess at least 6 or 8. Could be double that, not sure. Also, a craft cocktail bar! Its cool, seriously. I don’t drink alcohol, but I do like ginger ale with bitters. Grain Exchange has like a dozen different types of bitters on hand to make their signature craft cocktails. Score for me! And… you? lol OK To wrap up this review: 5 Stars! This is the Best Fries in Mt Airy, and best sandwich in Mt Airy(Buttermilk Fried Chicken Sandwich) Definitely a great spot for takeout, date night, or family/group dinners. Brunch menu looks amazing. Look, this is a locally owned, «Mom n Pop restaurant» that is committed to using organic, local, farm raised food in its kitchen. They pay incredible attention to detail, and I WANTTOSUPPORT a place like this, as a resident of Mt Airy. Healthy and delicious comfort food, awesome menu, hot restaurant! As for the bar, still its defining feature: Great spot for when McMenamins is too crowded. Hey, I am brutally honest in my reviews. That said… Five Stars, Grain Exchange! Now, to finish my fries and Buttermilk Chicken Sandwich I got for takeout this evening…

I’ve wanted to dine here for quite some time, so finally I had a chance and was not at all disappointed. We called on a Saturday night, and although they don’t take reservations, they had a table for 4 available so we rushed over. I see some Unilocalers complaining in reviews about the service here, but that was definitely not our experience. Our server was completely attentive throughout the meal — and had an excellent sense of humor, something that’s too often at a shortage — and there was no delay in the food being prepared and served. The Pulled Pork(seitan) sandwich was very good, a definite comfort food item, and I think their sweet potato fries are the best I’ve ever had. The side of brussel sprouts for the table was a good idea.(I’m indifferent to the bacon-flavored tempeh, which substitutes for the bacon on the vegetarian and vegan versions of the bacon menu items — one side of the menu is for carnivores, the other side offers vegetarian versions of basically the same items). The draft beer list was outstanding the night we were there, although one listed stout had kicked. But they had a nice range of brews including an excellent Stone double IPA through some porters and other choices at the stronger, darker end of the spectrum.

I really hope that I can provide a positive update for this review in the future; however, I seriously doubt that I will ever return to this business. For now, I can only give a 1 star review. I have visited 3 times since December 2015 so that I could really give them a chance, but the poor service is unforgivable. I really feel for the owners because the food and drink menu are wonderful. The space is also great with a nice atmosphere. Unfortunately, none of this matters if the staff makes a lasting bad impression due to providing such terrible service. My first visit to the Grain Exchange happened after visiting Earth Bread + Brewery. We decided to stop by for an after dinner drink before walking home with our friends. We were the only group seated in the dining room and only a few patrons were at the bar. The draft beer list was nice and I also liked the cocktail menu. Our server was not very friendly, but at least we got our drinks within a decent amount of time. The 2nd visit was on a moderately busy evening when we wanted to try out the dinner menu. We were quickly seated by the hostess, but our server did not come to our table to introduce himself until at least 10 minutes had passed. By that point, we knew exactly what we wanted for our drink order and we made sure to tell our server during this initial contact. I noticed that he sort of aimlessly stood in the staff area located near the hostess stand after taking our drink order. Perhaps he was daydreaming? I’m not sure. After approximately another 10 minutes, I believe another staff member noticed that we were still sitting at our table, without drinks, and she got our servers attention. At that point, I noticed that he walked over to the bar and I’m guessing that he was finally submitting our drink orders since we received our drinks a few minutes later. Remember… by the time we received our drinks, we had waited 10 minutes to even be initially acknowledged by our server and then it was another 10 — 15 minutes before he submitted our drink order and brought our drinks over to us. So, we had killed approximately 25 minutes at this restaurant before even making our dinner order! We made sure to place our dinner order as soon as the server brought our drinks to us and thankfully, the kitchen seemed to be getting orders out to the tables pretty quickly. My veggie dish was OK, but my husband really really enjoyed the burger and soup. Regarding the 3rd visit, we were quickly seated by the hostess, yet again, on a moderately busy night. I didn’t want to return to this restaurant, but my husband wanted to stop by for dinner since he really wanted the burger again. I made the best of this decision by deciding that I would like try the brie grilled cheese. My husband really wanted the founders breakfast stout and I was torn between the founders breakfast stout or the mulled wine. Oh yeah, we wanted oysters, too. We were waiting, prepared to order drinks and dinner… hoping to have a better experience at this restaurant. We waited at least 15 minutes this time. Well, I hate to share this, but our server NEVER acknowledged us. A group of 4 ended up being seated about 10 — 15 minutes after we arrived and our server actually went to their table, greeted them, poured water into their empty glasses, and took their drink orders. This was the first time that I had even seen our server for the entire time that we had been sitting in the dining room. After greeting the patrons who were seated after us, our server proceeded to quickly glance at the tables seated on each side of us to check on their food and drinks before she walked away from the dining area. This happened so quickly that she did not even make eye contact with us before walking away. I was pretty put off by this and I told my husband that we should just leave. Seriously, we had been sitting there for 15 minutes and not so much as a greeting or a glass of water was provided. Why would we continue to sit there when there are so many other restaurants within a stone’s throw away from this business?

Went there for an early dinner on a Sunday. We left disappointed with the food and service. Originally, we were impressed by the reviews on Unilocal and we had passed it a couple of times when we were dining in that area before. I was actually looking forward to dining here… when we arrived, we were seated quickly. There was one other table with customers but they were just leaving. The staff was standing at the bar watching/cheering a game on a tv over the bar. Our server was friendly but seemed distracted. We ordered the crawfish dip, a couple of beers, buttermilk chicken sandwich, mac n cheese, and the chocolate cake for dessert. The appetizer took about 20 mins. to arrive… they did eventually come out to tell us something was wrong with the oven and they would remove it from our check out of courtesy. We were then served our meals and about 15 mins later, our appetizer arrived. The buttermilk chicken sandwich: the chicken itself was soggy and/or very greasy, the kale or greens on the sandwich were soggy from being soaked in honey or grease maybe? It looked unpleasant. Normally, greasy wouldn’t be so bad with a nice crunch. This didn’t have that. The mac n cheese had a good smokey flavor from the bacon. The crawfish dip had good flavor as well… very cheesy and tangy. The bread it came with was toasted and slightly burnt around the edges. It was hard to chew or cut. Before we were asked if we wanted dessert, our server brought us the check. Maybe he wanted us to leave so that they can all continue watching the game without interruption, but it was strange. We asked if we can order dessert and he took our order. The chocolate cake was dense… a huge portion that was good for sharing. Not sure if the cake was stale or just hard from being refrigerated but it was hard to cut with a knife. I actually thought it might be frozen but it wasn’t. It had good flavor though. So, it wasn’t a horrible experience but with all the dining options in and around Philly, we will not be returning even if it was an off night for them. Sorry! :(

Stopped in on a Saturday night that wasn’t particularly crowded. Service was definitely slow — 45+ minutes for entrees. Our table was overflowing with empty glasses and plates — not bus service to make room or clear dishes. Had to track down our waiter to get our check at the end of the night. Ordered the $ 14 lamb burger medium rare that came out gray, dried out and seriously overcooked. Would have sent it back but just took too long to make the first one. Other entrees for dining companions were 2 – 3 star. Beers(tap) were $ 7-$ 8 each. Do yourself a favor — go next door to McMenamin’s and get a better selection of beer, for more realistic pricing, and a $ 9 burger that is twice the size of what they serve here.

What a genuine surprise! Suggested this place, sight unseen, based on an unexpectedly decent lunch at the East Falls Tavern earlier in the week. Service pleasant, and after some nicely reasonable glasses of the house cab and another red, plus a terrific whiskey sour, the three of us ordered the kale soup. All of $ 6.50, it was flavorful, studded w beans and topped w a fried egg. We asked for some bread, which a very pleasant wait staffer brought. It was toasted and substantial. Perfect light meal. This is one of those unsung neighborhood bar/restaurants that deserves a louder shout out. Very thoughtful menu that was so appealing. A definite revisit necessary.

I felt like some comfort food and cheer after two days of gloomy weather. On the radar: Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange. Awesome atmosphere and very pleasant and helpful staff. I sat at the bar to eat dinner since I was solo. Jess waited on me. I was pleasantly surprised to not only see fresh oysters on the menu, but it was Wednesday«buck a shuck» night! My timing was perfect! After ordering an IPA from a mature, diverse beer selection, I promptly ordered half a dozen of the featured oysters on special. As an entrée, I ordered braised short rib with mashed potatoes and carrots. The oysters were very tasty. The entrée did not disappoint. The short rib was fork tender and seasoned perfectly. The mash potatoes and carrots were delicious. What a very satisfying meal — exactly what I was craving! I intend to return very soon.

Low-key, mellow, modern, good food blah blah — I will say their menu seems to have a southern influence, which in most cases makes you raise a «no, thank you» eyebrow being in Philadelphia but actually satisfies any homey/comfort food cravings you might have. This is a good one — I’ll be back.

The Grain Exchange is a standard place for us to brunch with my Church group. I’ve been here several times and I have to say things have overall improved. I think the food is well thought out and executed well. I think some dishes are hit and miss such as: fried chicken + waffle dish. The waffles are soggy and the chicken is tasteless. My favorite meal here is the burger and shoestring fries. We recently tried out the short ribs poutine which was fantastic. One thing about this place that is always lacking is the service. It’s slow. And I am not sure why since it’s never really packed? I know there’s been a change in menu format and servers which has improved things slightly. I think this place has awesome potential. And for people who call this place pricey — NOTREALLY. I find the prices reasonable especially for the great quality of food and recipes. Try this place out for brunch. No lines on Saturday and Sunday!

Update: immediately after posting the review below the owner reached out to me to resolve the issues. Long story short, after seeing my review, they added a kid’s brunch menu. I appreciated ownership being open to feedback and willing to enhance customer experience based on that feedback. I haven’t had a chance to visit again but plan to in the future now that they are a kid friendly restaurant in a family oriented neighborhood. Visited Chesheim after three visits and I unfortunately have to say it was horrible. To start, my bf asked to taste two beers on tap. The waiter showed up with full size beers that we decided to drink anyway because he clearly didn’t listen to the request. We visited with my daughters and asked for a kids brunch menu. He let us know he could make any brunch menu item in a kids portion. He showed up with regular portions when the food came out. We asked for the check and realized we were charged adult prices for their meals. I asked him about it and he shrugged and said, «yeah»… After waiting 15 minutes he finally came back and ran our card for the bill. Service is very important to me and I have to say this visit is enough for me not to return. The restaurant was not full at all during peak brunch hours. There is a reason for that. I won’t be surprised if they are not in business for another six months.

When a lover’s walk took my lover and I to the neighborhood of Mt Airy, we found ourselves famished. The great eagle spirit himself could not end our hunger or slake our thirst, and McDonald’s was too troublesome a journey. So we found ourselves at the Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange, two lovers indeed. We had forgotten our Igloo cooler filled with spiced lamb shanks, but there was no need. The Cresheim Valley Grain Exchange served us a delicate yet unctuous plate of fine meats and cheeses. The libations were divine and plentiful. My lover drank a fine craft beer as she playfully tickled my leg under the table, and I drank wine that tasted as if it came from the mouth of Dionysus himself. We had hamburgers, juices flowing down our chests as we were too ravenous to care. I was reminded of the first time my lover and I entered the hot tub at the Welshly Arms Hotel, passions enflamed.
