We are sooo lucky to have this shop in our neighborhood! Quality fabrics, independent pattern company lines like Closet Case Patterns, Colette, to name a couple. Beautiful fabrics, and sewing supplies– and on top of that a variety of classes, from beginner to advanced. Heather and her hubby run it and They are both so helpful– stop by, you will be glad you did!

I love this little gem of a shop! After Spool, on South Street, and Fabrics on the Hill, in Chestnut Hill, closed a few years ago, there’s been a lack of modern fabric stores in Philadelphia. Handcraft fills that gap, for sure! The fabric selection is continuing to grow, and the variety of classes is impressive. The few times I’ve been to the shop, there seems to always be a class in session — pillowcases, garment sewing, pajama pants. And, the audience is wide-ranging: children and teens, seniors, and everyone in-between! I think it’s great that people of all ages are excited about sewing.

I am writing to you whilst wearing my new custom-made super cute skirt that I created myself this evening with the help of the ever effervescent, vastly knowledgeable, and always fun owner, Heather. The shop: In Mt. Airy, which I LOVE. Super light, clean feel inside with really gorgeous fabric. I am not a big fan of the word ‘gorgeous’ but it is the best word to describe the threads situation. There are lots and lots of sewing machines on which to… um sew and big tables on which to measure, pin, cut, and do other such sewing things. Her sewing machines are all brand new and fairly easy to use(even for this newbie herself). The classes: I’ve taken two group lessons and one private. The time flies because there are so many steps and they are all DIFFERENT. That and Heather is a super engaging teacher. She is really patient and shows neat little shortcuts. In all of the classes, at the end, I have walked out with stellar, no I mean STELLAR finished projects. I made a pillowcase(fit for a boho B&B), a maxi skirt(fit for rooting for Germany in a sporting event), and a short skirt(fit for loving farm animals) with pockets. I am so very very pleased. I NEVER would have found any of these things in a store. They’re custom, just for me! It’s still kind of all overwhelming, but coming here makes it a super fun hobby to learn. There is also Open Sew night every couple weeks. Get thee here.
