Among the other perks of marriage, I am pretty psyched that I get to partake of the Jefferson IBC Wellness Center since my «other» is on the faculty there. The fees are pretty reasonable(~$ 400 for him + another ~$ 200 for me) for the year, and the facilities have all of the typical weight and cardio equipment you would expect from a gym. You can also partake in various exercise classes, and schedule reasonably priced group or individual sessions with a trainer. The basement location does not make for the most scenic workouts, but there are plenty of TVs around the cardio area. The pool, while small(5 lanes, 60′ long), is an awesome bonus and rarely crowded. Actually, the whole facility is rarely crowded! With the exception of peak after-work hours you practically never have to wait for a machine. Sometimes on the weekends you have the place almost to yourself. Since they are not open to the public, I have experienced far fewer«gym creeps» here than at other facilities. It’s mostly med students, docs and nurses looking to get in a good workout and get on with their day. My biggest gripe is that I wish they would open on the weekends before 10 am. Failing that, I wish they would actually be open and be ready for business by 10 am instead of looking for the keys or the lifeguard.

Decent equipment, rec leagues, and(outside of after new years and the beginning of the school year) not THAT crowded considering its size. It is my understanding that they are making some small changes to the layout that should help with some of the congestion… but they’re working with a pretty tough basement space so I’ll give them credit for what they’ve done with it. Major bonus points for the pool. You can’t really ask for more if you can get a membership here– Its only for employees and students.

Membership here is included in tuition for students. For a student gym it’s not bad. Pros: * Free for students * Group classes available * Big pool and recently renovated basketball court on site * New rubberized barbells * Good amount of new matrix and life fitness machinery * Lockerooms and showers available for use included in membership * Hours are decent but not great * Flat screen TVs in cardio and weight area Cons: * Small size, packed equipment * Overly crowded for size especially after new years and around 6:00PM on weekdays * Lacks essential machines like lat cable row * Basement location can be claustrophobic * No steam room or sauna * Not much mat space for floor workouts * Most Treadmills face a wall 4 feet in front * Only one bench press available. C’mon now Overall decent for a student gym… but there are better options in the area if you are not
