I like how they pretend to not understand what you’re saying when you need their help looking for something. *sarcasm*

Wife and I walked in and picked up several items and attempted to pay with a credit card-​what I do in every other place in America. Well, guy says it’s a 10 dollar limit on credit. We left the stuff on the counter and walked. Philadelphia seems to think everyone should pay cash, for some reason. So lame. Need cash for your steak and cheese. Need cash at Reading Market; they just assume you know this. Advance into the 21^st century, Philadelphia.

Where do you go in Old City when you want a beer, a quick bite and only have 10 minutes for both? As I learned last Wednesday, Mulberry would be that spot.
For about $ 25, my husband and I each got a sandwich and split a six-​pack of Coronado Islander IPA. Coronado? Yes, Coronado! I was floored in excitement.
While scarfing down my grub, I had a chance to eye up some of their other beers. The selection is pretty solid and the prices are pretty decent for PA.
I’m a little weary of the food because I ended up suffering flu-​like symptoms the evening after eating the sandwich. I’m not blaming the sandwich because there are many food and non-​food factors that could have caused the ailments. However, I do note this as a potential cautionary tale.
The sitting area isn’t anything special, but I was just happy to have food & beverage before going along to my next destination. I’ll be back for their six-​packs.

The sandwiches here are made quickly and taste fresh. It’s a bit overpriced but it’s a corner store in Old City, that’s to be expected. I wish they still took phone orders for food but I can understand why they don’t anymore.
The beer selection in the back is pretty good but also overpriced. They’ve got a little bit of everything and a HUGE soft drink selection.

Overpriced… yes but so convenient. Compared to the other markets around old city, the prices for some things like milk and bread are on the low side

Pricey… but what isn’t in old city? Great beer selection, awesome sandwiches, and everything else you expect out of a local market. Yes, expensive, but you won’t leave without the basic things you want.

I was a regular at Mulberry Market for a year when I lived in Old City. They have a great selection of snack food despite their small size, as well as other handy objects like light bulbs and playing cards. They have a great selection of beverages, which is mostly what I went in for, and not just beer. Because it’s a pretty small space, if there are other customers in the store, it can be a bit of a challenge to navigate.
They are a little on the pricey side, but these small Old City markets tend to be that way, and it’s no worse than the others. They accept credit cards, but there is a $ 10 minimum. They can also be a little judge-​y when you buy a pint of ice cream and only ask for one spoon, but hey, I’m judging myself too at that point. Whatever, it’s Ben & Jerry’s Half Baked, what’s a girl to do?

Tons of take out beer — great selection!!! And they have gluten free ciders as well.
They carry Angry Orchard, Woodchuck and just saw they got Tweason’ale — but I think that may have been a one off, but they have gluten free options!
They also do made to order sandwiches here and they have some various grocery items as well so if your in a pinch and need something this is a great place to come. They even have a little dairy section and frozen section… the beer section is much larger however.

Mulberry Market has really great subs. I recommend the pastrami or the tuna club.
I would never buy any groceries from here, unless in a bind.

I like Mulberry. It’s great if you want just a couple of beers, and they have an awesome selection. Yes, they just finally opened a beer distributor in Old CIty, but sometimes you just want a couple. They are reasonably priced as well.
As far as grocery they have what you would expect in a small market. I usually just pick up some chips. But they also have medicine, meats, etc.

Most food items are overpriced, some by quite a bit. However, the takeout beer selections are decent and fairly priced. A major turn-​off though in turning the market into a bar of sorts by allowing the seemingly out of work/​homeless to consume onsite the cheapest beers sold there, and in enough quantity to get visibly intoxicated with the attendant ghetto curse words insulting the other customers. That belongs in a bar and the bar would be about 30 blocks north of there.
Note to the owner: Ease up on the bouncer, tough-​guy exterior displayed at the cash register by a certain male staffer. It is ok for him to smile especially when your customers are paying more than they should! Why not just let the always-​charming female staff deal with the customers?

I just wanted to stop by the market next to the hotel for a crappy bag of chips, and was shocked to find that they had a great beer selection! Ended up returning to the hotel with two six-​packs.
A little pricey, but definitely better than what is offered at the hotel. Also, quite a good selection of food items and drinks for a small little market. Definitely a pleasant surprise.

If you are staying in one of the nearby hotels, this is your default one-​stop shop for all those things you forgot at home, plus a few cheap eats.
This is a great place to grab some water, some yogurt for breakfast, a decent sandwich, or a 6-​pack. I went there three different times later in the evening and they were always open. Sandwiches made with Boar’s Head meats, amazing beer selection, friendly staff.
Not priced as low as your Target or the like, but then again, there ARE no discount retailers down in the part of town!
Stay OUT of that hotel «gift shop» with their $ 3.00 16oz bottles of water. Head to the Mulberry!

Great place when you need something local and quick. Sometimes you just don’t want to trek to that big supermarket and you’re willing to pay a little more for the convenience. Try these folks. Nice selection of groceries and beer. Excellent hoagies. Everyone is really friendly. I stop in often and I’m sure to continue.

Old City provides a number of benefits: accessible parking, proximity to great restaurants, bars and historic sites. Those are all nice but when you LIVE in Old City you require other essentials. Fortunately, you have two great markets within walking distance.
Mulberry has a lot going for it: a modest selection of dairy products, canned foods and chips, a surprisingly efficient deli, and a nice (but pricey) selection of domestic and import beer,
But where Mulberry fails, another local market reigns. For starters, Mulberry closes at 8:00, which bothers me more than it should. Also, if you’re cooking and need some random spice, or other ingredient you’re much more likely to find it at Sassafras.
Ultimately, if you live in OC you more than likely frequent both markets.

This grocery store/​deli/​beer barn is a very well run store located in the heart of Olde City Philadelphia. The chip selection is very good and they are fully stocked with all kinds of non alcoholic beverages. The sandwiches are decent and they have tables in the back to sit and eat. Nice selection of ice cream too. The staff is very friendly and always helpful.
Two pretty big cons about the place. One, they are part of the minimum $ 10 credit card club which seems to plague most small bodega type markets. Two, since they have a minimal deli and tables and chairs they can sell beer and malt liquor by the can. The homeless alcoholics love this place because they can panhandle the tourists and boutique shoppers in Olde City and then hit this place up with their change for a tall boy. I can’t count how many times I’ve seen people passed out on the stoop a few buildings down from this place.
All in all it’s a great market but seems to attract a bad element to the neighborhood.

Stopped in to Mulberry today for a snacking emergency — and they graciously made my little one a PLAIN turkey (no mayo, no mustard, no veggies, no nuthin’) on white (untoasted).
Not MY choice, but what-​evs. She dug it and devoured it and I willingly forked over $ 4.79 for it. OUCH.
Great service by the counter staff.
Oh — and I got me an INKO Iced White tea. — I luvs that stuff!
Mulberry Market is all THAT and a bag of gourmet chips!

I routinely give thanks for Mulberry Market. She is an oasis in the otherwise arid beer desert that is Old City. She could charge us almost anything for beer (ala Omega Pizza) due to her sole provider status, but she doesn’t. Her selection is diverse and her prices are fair… at least as fair as you could ever expect from a six-​pack takeout place in Philadelphia.
I only have one request of the people who work there.
Could you please stop judging me when I buy my weekly Joose?
I know it’s not classy and I know it’s not advised for consumption by the manner born, but it’s efficient. I routinely suffer through a long, abusive work week and the only thing that keeps me going strong through the tedium of the grind is the knowledge that by 7:00 pm on Friday, I’ll be kicking back on my couch with my girl, my pooch, and a tall glass of energy-​infused, alcohol-​laden malt liquor.
I know what you’re thinking… I can see it in your eyes. You think I’m a loser, a deadbeat, a diseased reprobate… some sort of common street tramp ushered through your doors on the back of an evil wind.
I know why you think this, but my knowledge of your rationale rarely softens the blow of your harsh assumption. It’s obvious… it’s because the only customers you probably ever see buying Joose are the 8 shady guys that live in the back of your store and spend all their days drinking the liquid lightning and harassing your normal patrons… but you shouldn’t stereotype.
I’m not like them at all (especially not that one guy with the crooked eyeball).
I have a job. I have my own hair. I have my own fingernails. AND, I take care of my kids… well, at least I will one day… I think… unless they’re overly effeminate or bad at sports… I can’t say how I’ll react then… hmmm.
Anyways, I’m a good man and you should view me as such whether I want to get crunk or not. So, please, in the future, I’d like to see a little empathy & understanding for a work-​weary man in need of simple respite and not the cold, callous stares of judgment that should be reserved for the true Joose-​head Junkies.

Best Deli sandwiches I’ve found in Old City so far!
All Boars Head ingredients, tremendous Hoagie Rolls, and very cheap ($ 5.50). Just a great value and damn good sandwich. I’ve been there about 3 – 4 times already and they are consistent. This rating is based only on their sandwiches… not the grocery side of the business.

Steer clear of Mulberry Market.
I was a regular customer, visiting 7 – 8 times per week. Recently they have significantly increased prices, decreased the quality and quantity of filling in the sandwiches, started adding mysterious charges when a credit card is used, and marking up stamps and envelops to a ridiculous level (almost 100% markup on a stamp and $ 2 for a single envelope.)
I asked one of the employees I chatted with almost every day about all of this and her response was that is how to make money. I disagree, abusing your regular customers is not a good business plan.
Even though it is a few extra blocks I am going to become a Sassafras market regular.
