Rothman Ice Rink

Took my 8 yr old daughter on a Sunday evening and unfortunately we lasted one trip around the rink before she asked to leave.
Pros: Lovely environment with pretty lights, numerous heating lamps, indoor seating area to get snacks and hot chocolate, pricing reasonable.
Cons: Rentals are hockey skates and not figure skates and weren’t in the greatest of shape. Rink is pretty small for the amount of people they let on. Poorly tended ice — we got on right after they ‘cleaned it up’ and it was rough and choppy and the worst areas were the perimeter where inexperienced skaters would need smoother ice the most.
Staff was hit or miss. Some were very friendly and helpful and others were glum and ignored you. I got the impression we weren’t the only unhappy patrons, as several people were also returning their skates and as mentioned the session had just begun.

Terrible ice really needs resurfacing or grooming it’s like tripping on snow, just sloppy overall. Also, I wouldn’t suggest this rink for kids and families or anyone who needs to travel the wall, or assistance unfortunately the referee has to patrol for safety but leaning on or stopping in the path of flow isn’t on the list. When a wall isn’t moving and you have groups of people leaning over or getting their pictures taken from non skaters in the lodge or seating area in front of the cabin. This causes a congestion build up where now the in experienced little kids are forced to skate in your path like running a red light, just crossing the path of moving traffic and causing more accidents. The atmosphere is fine otherwise music & lighting but only come here if you’re experienced or don’t mind the poor ice get there early and leave when ice gets slushy.

My daughter had been bugging me since last year that she wanted to go ice skating here. Since they opened up only last year, they were crazy busy. Luckily, when we went down for the Mummers Parade yesterday the rink was not as busy after dinner time.
Let me start off with the size of the rink. It is much smaller than the rink at the riverfront. But it is in a perfect an ideal location considering it is right at City Hall and you have a perfect view of the coming and goings of all of the people walking around. It’s actually very interesting.
They use the Zamboni to clean the rink every hour because it does get very busy. But in an hour, you can go around that ring quite a few times and have all the fun.
The prices are fair, especially considering that you’re doing that’s in the city. Skate rental is $ 9, and to actually skate ranges from $ 5 — 12 depending on age and group. It’s pretty fair. And that covers as long as you want. You’re given the wristband. You are not given socks you must have your own. Keep in mind if you fall on the ice you will get wet so make sure you have long pants on. There are several signs around the area stating the prices and the rules. You can’t miss them. If you do by any chance miss them however, there are also employees stationed at the entrance of the rink itself before you even enter the building that you can ask questions. They are not apart of the rink employees so much as a part of being city employees. Once you enter, then you walk into the building let them know how many skaters and if you need to rent skates.
If you get hungry or cold, there is a tent that is heated. They provide drinks and food, the prices can be a little steep in there. But that’s to be expected. Also, outside the tent there is a bunch of heating lamps that you can stand under. They provide a lot of heat.
The employees are very helpful. There are skaters on the ice at all times who are helpful and will assist any small children who need help. Also the adults who need help too lol.
All in all, it was a great experience. They really helped my daughter enjoy her first experience ice skating. We will definitely be going back soon

A fun activity and great location. Unfortunately the food service was awful. Long wait and limited options. Can’t seem to get it right. Ice conditions fair considering the warm weather.

This ice skating rink is terrible, definitely try to stay away if you can; the one at Pennslanding is so much better, plus it’s bigger and more to do. And their staff is much more professional and friendlier.
First of all, let me justified my one star review for this place, we got here around 10:30 something; we had no idea what time this place closed. We assume, since it’s Friday, they would close late like around midnight or 1:00 am, but the guy taking our money «claims» he told us that it will be closing at 11:00. He did not inform us that the skating rink closes at 11:00 pm, plus, why would someone pay $ 17, for admission, skating rentals, and socks to only skate for 20 minutes or less. If he told us, we would’ve never pay for such a ridiculous, absurd, and expensive price to only skate for less than 20 minutes.
So after skating for about 15 – 20 minutes, we were told to get off the ice because they were closing. We were shocked and we felt cheated out of our money. We asked to speak to a manager, and this guy, his name is «Ameen» or «Aneem» or whatever the hell his name is; was no help whatsoever. He kept telling us that there’s a sign that tells you what time they close, and he also «claims» that he told us what time they closed. First of all, nobody can see that damn sign; second of all, he did not tell us, plus even if he did… he should’ve gotten an «okay» or confirmation that the customer understand that the ice skating rink closes soon. So there was four of us who bought the ticket admission to skate, but how come none of us knew that they closed at 11pm? BECAUSE THEY NEVER TOLD US!!!
So the boss who’s supposedly higher than «Aneem», the old white guy with gray hair, was even worst. He was like, «I said we close at 11 tonight.» He didn’t say anything, I don’t remember him saying a word while taking our money, except for the cost of everything together.
Take your business elsewhere, this ice skating rink sucks, and their staff is so unprofessional, rude, not to mention… RATCHET.

This will be our new holiday tradition in the city!
The price is good. $ 14 per person that includes skate rental and admission. If you have your own skates you don’t have to pay a skate fee ($ 9) just the $ 5 for admittance. You can skate as long as you want. They clean the ice off with a zamboni machine every so often.
We came at night and it is well lit and they play Christmas music while you skate.
There was is a «cabin» for drinks and snacks right next to the rink.
There are artists booths if you want to pick up some art.
