Wow this is the best place in Philadelphia to get seafood. The food was delicious. I took my mom here at Sal’s for her birthday. She really enjoyed her meal. The food was seasoned and fresh. They also have fresh produce and good prices. Check out this place… you will find it worth your while.

Great seafood at a steal. The order process is anything but efficient and sometimes when you order extra crab you dont get it. But it hasn’t kept me from being a regular. Apparently they’ve also got produce, but once you’re inside everything but the menu and order counter gets a little fuzzy. Seafugue…

I love this place. They have most of my vegetable /general grocery needs and plus, I can get $ 2 footlong sub with veggies! I mean, can you actually make a footlong sub for $ 2? Well, you probably can, but come on! not for much cheaper! If you’re going for the sandwich route and your one who likes minimal mayo, you MUST specify or else you get waaaay too much. I’ve also gotten the wonderfully yummy and affordable seafood. I’m moving away from this place, but I still think I’ll hop off the subway to get my sub. You gotta go.

I recently decided to be a little healthier and consume more vegetables. Even though I love the look of the produce at Whole Foods, they call it Whole Paycheck for a reason and the first time I went there with my produce list I left there needing a loan to get through the rest of the month. After a little hunting I found a little produce place in Mt. Airy that I love. Only, Mt. Airy. Here I am trying to leave a smaller footprint and once a week I’m driving all the way across town to buy a few tomatoes. I needed a more convenient, still high quality but not too expensive produce place and then I found out about Sal’s. Located on Broad, between Girard and Spring Garden, the location is convenient, so I decided to give them a shot. On shopping day, I headed out and found them. Parked on Broad, paid the meter, and walked in. For such a tiny space it is impressive how much stuff they have in there, arrayed cleanly and reasonably easy to find everything. Perhaps it’s the close confines and the fresh seafood taking up more than half of the space but there is a bit of a fishy smell in there. I was there just for the produce so I ignored the seafood, and the smell and worked my way through the list. Each item, or bunch is priced between $ 1 to $ 2 and therefore pretty reasonable. Everything is packaged in plastic bags so you can’t inspect individual fruits and vegetables the way you can at the supermarkets but you can still use your eyes and have a sense of the quality. I did note that the bunches here were a little smaller than the comparably priced bunches at my Mt. Airy place, but I still felt like compared to a supermarket or Whole Paycheck, I was getting good values. I was able to find everything on my list and I checked out. My purchase far exceeded the $ 5 credit card minimum but just be aware that you can’t pop in for an onion and pay with a credit card(for example). Although for the most part I feel like the produce I brought home was decent I was a little disappointed at how some of it aged in my fridge. Not everything made it all the way until the end of the week and it was necessary to make a supplementary produce run to keep my diet. Therefore, while I would totally return to this place to pick up a few items that I’m going to consume in the next day or two I’m still going to head out to Mt. Airy for my weekly needs.

Great deals. I grab inexpensive bags of fruits and veggies from here occasionally. They also have seafood platters that are yummy.

I’m proposing a name change to Sal’s Seafood Plus, since this seems to be the big draw here. I came here after work to pick up some produce and ended up with two seafood platters. Maybe I am a snob(I’m probably a snob) but the fruit looked a little worse for wear. Plus, I am dubious about a carton of strawberries for a dollar. I guess if you are planning on consuming the produce within minutes of purchasing it, this deal can’t be beat. But since my produce tends to sit for a little while I opted to skip it and hit my regular Capriotti Brothers. But the seafood though. They sell a bunch of different platter combos, all with a baked potato, corn on the cob, and broccoli, and all for an unbelievably reasonable price. I ordered two platters for the aforementioned accoutrements as well as a snow crab cluster and half a dozen shrimp. This feast cost me a grand total of $ 24/$ 12 each. When ordering they give you the option of mild or hot, and I highly suggest hot. It is basically a medley of garlic and old bay and all that is right with the world. My car might still smell like it, but I wouldn’t change a thing. Sal’s is definitely now a fixture on my weeknight dinner rotation!

This place has great seafood! I came in to grab some dinner on the way home and decided to check Sal’s out. From the outside, it doesn’t look like much, but the inside was very busy. They cook your food to order, so there was a bit of a wait, but when I got home, it was still nice and hot. I ordered the mild but I think next time I will get the spicy! Even though Sal’s doesn’t look like much, its popularity and food speak for themselves! Plus, you can’t beat the price. Tip: order at the back counter, pay in front, and then bring your slip to the back so they know to start cooking!

So I talked about the seafood… DIDYOUKNOW, for $ 2.00 including tax you can get a Turkey OR Ham Hoagie with everything on it? Like cheese, mayo, tomatoes, salt pepper, long hots/peppers, lettuce YUPFORTWODOLLA. How about that in this economy? Yes. it’s edible. I’ve gotten it twice and both quality were great. As good as I could make at home for 2 bucks. I’d do that over Subway.

Great for cheap produce and seafood! The quality of the produce is not always the best, but they make up for it with the prices. This place has kept me alive with a shoestring budget many times. If you are poor and want to eat fresh, this is where you need to be shopping.

Very good seafood! Steamed not fried. You get a lot too! I got a #7 which comes with 2 clusters of dungeness 10 lg. shrimp, corn on the cob, broccoli, potatoes with garlic, butter, and seasoning hot or mild? I could not finish it I saved some for later ;).

Seafood: Cheap, tasty, solid. No fancy building, just a counter in the grocery store. No eating area, just get your food and run away. Can get really busy during late afternoon when students and adults are out for the day, so call your order in.

I needed to make a mirepoix but it was 6pm and the truck near Progress Plaza was closed. I remembered there was this tiny shack that had produce in the name so I rode over to get those three essential vegetables. Inside, it’s pretty small in space and crowded, the produce is in the front, the dairy case in the middle, steamed seafood in the back in which the smell permeates the entire store. I saw that you can get close to a pound of steamed snow crab legs, steamed small potatoes, and broccoli for $ 9, which seems like a sweet deal. I didn’t see any blue crabs. I bought a bag of onions, carrots, and celery, but I didn’t even meet the $ 5 minimum required for a credit card. Shit, so I scrambled and picked up a quart of milk and a bag of collard greens and finally managed to eek a few cents past a Lincoln. That’s seriously cheap produce. However, the reasons were clear to me, some of the stuff has had better days. The celery was starting to turn pale green and the carrots seemed to be kinda dry. This didn’t ruin my mirepoix, but I certainly would not serve them fresh. Maybe it was Monday and the produce sat over the weekend, but the damn stuff was so cheap I wouldn’t really hesitate to come back if my main produce truck wasn’t open. I think I’ll just get seafood for dinner next time and skip the mirepoix needs.
