Love this place. It’s currently undergoing renovations so there will be more great things to come, but as of now it’s a nice place to drink. I stopped in originally because of their special craft brews made specially for the bar. But I keep coming back because it’s a great neighborhood bar. This place has a heart. The bartenders are friendly and the crowd is as diverse and colorful as the neighborhood it serves. If you’re going to stop in for a drink, this is the place to do it.

I was kind of excited when I first found out that it was owned by the owners of the gray lodge and the hop angel. But when I went there for the first time after the name change it was pretty much the same thing as walking into the prince café was a new sign on the building. The beer selection was nonexistent the only IPA they had came in a can. The second disappointment of the night was the fact that they don’t serve any food. I wouldn’t normally care of it considering they have great food at their other two establishments it was a bit of a letdown. The bartender was very friendly and the bartender also told me that the owners wanted to put in the pizza oven but it was rejected by the city of Philadelphia. Hopefully they remodeled the place and actually get a functional kitchen but until then it’s still the same exact corner bar that it’s always been.

While I’d love to keep this secret gem of a place all to myself, it just doesn’t seem right. This place is great. It looks like your average local watering hole, however, it has quite an impressive beer selection and a very warm and welcoming feel. The staff is very friendly and the evening was complete with live music and a masseuse! Frolic on over and enjoy yourself. I cant remember the last time I had that much fun on a Thursday evening.

Full disclosure: I designed the logo for Sawtown, so I’m friendly with the owners and have a good idea of what’s in store for this place. They’re going to be renovating top to bottom over the coming months, adding a wood fired pizza oven, etc. I’m real stoked to see how everything turns out. Anyway, I’ll try to to be as unbiased as possible in my review. As it is now, the interior is pretty standard dive. But what’s great is even though their kitchen isn’t fully operational yet, they offer 1 or 2 food specials(including brunch on weekends!) almost every day. I stopped in for the sausage gravy & biscuits today and as a southern transplant, I will tell you: it’s legit. Bloody Mary was on point as well. Seriously, keep an eye on their Facebook page & get in on these specials while they last. If you’re in the neighborhood it’d just be stupid not to.

Stopped in after I heard it was affiliated with Grey Lodge. Can’t say I was impressed. Maybe there’s more renovation, but it looks pretty ordinary right now. Like a thousand other neighborhood taprooms in Philly. Fake brick paneling around bar, fake wood bar. Linoleum floor. We will see. Nothing special right now. Won’t make a special trip back either.
