I love this neighborhood park — great playground and open green space to run aruond. A group is making great strides on improving this city treasure — check it out —

This park is basically my backyard and a much needed addition to my life. Having greenery so close by and little-tyke soccer games on Saturday mornings make me feel like I’m back home in suburban NJ. I don’t miss home much, but when I do this gives me that little bit of reprieve before taking the deep breath and bitch-slap back into reality. The rec center at Starr Garden plays host to loads of activities for keeping kids out of trouble after school lets out, there’s also a baseball field, and basketball courts. If you’re into more grown-up games like spud and blob-tag, the big open field is perfection. I’m sure there are a myriad of shady and quasi-illegal activities that also take place behind those chain linked fences, but let’s be real… it’s just another lovely city park.

As a result of someone flagging my previous review of Starr Garden Playground, it has come to my attention that I haven’t been paying attention and that the Starr Garden Playground has apparently nothing to do with Stephen Starr. No connection whatsoever. Zero. Zip. None. Nada.(Other than sharing a surname, of course.) This obviously changes my opinion of Starr Garden Playground. Starr Garden Playground now seems to me to be nothing more than your exceedingly average Philadelphia playground/park. Not too nice. Not too shabby. Somewhere in the middle.(Again my seemingly arbitrary rating system comes into play[ground]). As has been suggested to me, this playgrounds would make an excellent spot for some type of picnic. I’m thinkin’ maybe from the Blackbird Pizzeria, since they’re located right close by. Creperie Beau-Monde is also a possible choice, though I don’t know how well the crepes travel ’cause I haven’t tried it yet. Just an idea. Then there’s always the reliable PretzelPicnic™ option. Always reliable. Apologies to Mr. Stephen Starr for any confusion. Still looking forward to trying that Beer Garden. I didn’t know that the Starr Garden Playground was BYOB. At least now I know that if I want beer at Starr Garden Playground I’ll have to bring my own.

Your child will experiment with marijuana here, on a school night, packing overpriced regs into a cheap piece(or a dutchmaster, if his older friend who can roll blunts is on hand), make obscene gestures toward the wall-attached steel humanoids, yell things at Wiccans in the baseball field on Halloween, shit talk the boys playing ball, decide to grab a swing, change his mind, ignore a girl who lives around the corner from him, and tell you he was at a friend’s house.

Philadelphia’s first playground established in 1905! it’s little more concrete than green, but the baseball field and basketball courts make it the perfect place to catch up on some needed sports. there’s also enough slides and swings to make junior happy(or you if your a big kid at heart). But I like Starr Garden best for it’s inner courtyard. with plenty of benches, a nice garden, Mosaic work, and steel statues, it’s an inviting spot to go into for a quick read.
