The purpose of the Dirt Factory is to(1) keep compostable waste out of the waste stream of West Phila(2) provide a place for our community to sustainably get rid of compostable waste(food scraps/other organic matter) and(3) generate organic compost that can be used in our community gardens! I was fortunate to see the grand opening of the Dirt Factory yesterday(which was fun and exciting), and I even got to contribute to the compost-making process with my own food scraps. You’ll be surprised by the small space, but there’s a lot going on in there! The way I understand it, there are specific hours(check website for most up-to-date info) during which you can drop off your compostables. They also offer to pick up compostables. Ultimately, what gets composted will be recycled back into our community in form of super local compost for our gardens!
